Six convicted in 'honour' beating with metal rods

Six men in Hallsberg, central Sweden, have been convicted and sentenced to prison after the severe honour-related beating of a 19-year-old with metal rods at a gym.

The young man turned up bleeding at the reception of the local gym Alléhallen in Hallsberg in the beginning of October last year. He was quickly taken to hospital where medical staff performed emergency surgery.

Police quickly suspected six men who had been in the gym previous to the beating. They allegedly beat the 19-year-old so severely with metal bars that he was close to losing his life.

According to the prosecutor, the men wanted to protect the daughter in their family after an alleged kidnapping attempt.

The young woman’s father was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to four years in prison.

His three sons were all convicted of attempted murder and two will serve time in prison, two received 6 year sentences and the third 5.5 years. The two sons with the longer sentence will also be deported from Sweden after having served their time and not allowed back for at least ten years.

The man who owned the gym where the beating took place was also convicted to 2.5 years in prison while his 19-year-old son will serve one year.

Prosecutor Karl-Erik Antonsson had charged all six with attempted murder as he thought it was clear that they had acted together, that they all were aware of what was going to happen and that they left the man in such a state that he would have died, had he not been taken so quickly to hospital.

“I haven’t had a chance to read the verdict yet so I am not sure whether I will appeal, but it isn’t completely out of the question. The father was only convicted of aggravated assault and I am hesitant to accept that as nothing took place without his blessing,” Antonsson told TT.

However, he said that what makes the case difficult to judge is that the perpetrators came and went and that the father arrived at the crime scene after the first, more serious, stab wounds were dealt.

“At the same time we know that he was mapping out the victim’s movements the days before the crime was committed,” said Antonsson.

The victim’s lawyer, Elisabeth Fritz, told TT that she will be contacting her client to discuss whether he will accept the 150,000 kronor ($22,284) damages that he has been awarded, as he had asked for twice as much.

Her client was very badly beaten and there is a risk of future physical problems from an injured nerve in his face.

Filthy animals. How do such people come to be? It's frightening that there are people like that living in an advanced, civilised nation like Sweden. They should all be deported back to whichever jungle they came from.
15:19 April 19, 2012 by G Kin
It is just terrible indeed that people will go out to kill in the name of honour. What kind of values do they have?.

If they are so bent at keeping such primitive diabolic values, why can't they just stay back most likely in the Middle East where they come from?. Sentences in these kinds of crimes should be exemplary so that before they pack their bags and leave for the civilised world they should be ready for enlightenment.

Fascist don't miss chance to speak against immigrants in insulting way, although Swedish criminals beat people everyday and nobody call them animals. Check Swedish prisons, it is full of violent people.

Where are all those offended by the 'racist' cake now? Female circumcision IS an African thing and hoonour killings/beatings ARE a Middle Eastern thing. It's hardly racism to point out the facts.

Go and comment about the racist cake thing under that article. African people who do not practice FGM and who denounce it are insulted in a bad taste of art work depicting all people of african descent. I am one of such.

Anyhow, I know how some of you cherish caressing the edges of racism. DENIAL OF RACISM IS A NEW FORM OF RACISM!

Violent people who were not born in Sweden should be permantly and swiftly deported from Sweden.

@ G Kin

The cake might have been bad taste but it was created by a BLACK man, so how the heck can it be racist?

Doo you know how many bad taste caricatures of white people exist? Many. Are they also 'racist'?

Your reasoning simply makes no sense.

The cake was ugly and tasteless such as female circumcision itself. And it served its purpose because it unveiled the hypocrisy of such ati-racist groups that feel deeply offended by a stupid cake but not by mutilating bodies of thousands of women every year.

Do not cry louder than it is. A few elements to rooted and sanctioned as is the case in this case does not mean that is how the society at large is. If you are nonswede you may just as well be polluting the society already.

@philster61

"Were they Swedish or non Swedish?"

Oh yeah, what a mystery. After all, no Svensson is a stranger to some "honour" beating. I take it that after crippling the guy with rods they went to enjoy "fredags mys" and laughed in a "lagom" loudness during Bingo lotto, not to disturb the neighbours.
20:59 April 19, 2012 by G Kin
@strixy I do not know how black the artist is in terms of his experiences and understanding of what it means to be black. That I think he alone can answer. And please, because the anti-racist group has spoken on this issue it does not mean that is the only issue they talk about. You think you know and understand the hurt of these ills more than them?. Ask some of them and they might know in person a girl that has been mutilated. Do you know one?.
21:12 April 19, 2012 by StockholmSam
Hold on a second. Everyone here condemning these guys as barbaric animals who should be shot or at least deported. And yet, the victim seems to have been involved in a kidnapping plot. Let's say he did kidnap the girl and perhaps rape her. If the police caught him (a big "if") then he might have gotten two years in prison. Then all of you would be screaming about how weak the police and laws are in Sweden and that it would be better if you took the law into your own hands and killed the guy if it had been your sisters.

Make up your minds, please. Which side are you really rooting for?
21:43 April 19, 2012 by Uncle
"Make up your minds, please. Which side are you really rooting for?"

SIX people came and beat ONE with metal rods. It does not even matter that he was a kidnapper. I would take all of them (including the beaten criminal and the previously convicted gym owner and the sister and the parents of these two wonderful families) and send them back to the caves in a cargo plane, there they can enjoy their hobby of kidnapping, raping, beating and avoiding taxes.

@Adshasta-

I can name one. ABB. Can you name any others? Didn't think so. Wanna see how many M.E./N.A. people we can name?
01:10 April 20, 2012 by Challie70
Not allowed back in for 10 years....allowed back in?!! They broke the law, almost killed someone and you are actually thinking about letting them back in....don't forget to give them brand new iron pipes on entry back into the country. Oh and this time make sure the kidnapper gets handcuffs so she can't run away next time. Here's the rope Sweden...lets tighten your noose a little bit tighter. It's your country not theirs if they don't like it... THEY CAN GO HOME!!!

By the way I am an immigrant, the difference is I am thankful for what Sweden has done for me and I study my ass off to fit in and become part of the community. I don't wave my countries flag in your face and then whine and cry when you wave yours back...It is your country take care of it!! Grow some serious viking balls like your supposed to have.

@ Stockholm Sam

One man's promise of a lifelong love for a young girl and to take her away from a sea of troubles is another man's description of attempted kidnapping and rape. Of course I have zero facts but I am curious to know if (before the beating) the girl was truly terrified or simply saddened that her family did not approve of her choice of boyfriend, who she may have actually wanted to run off with.

The point that we now all have ample facts about here in my opinion is simply that the so-called justice system in Sweden provides zero deterrent against violent crime. The young guy could indeed have been a creep and could have kidnapped her and raped her (for which he would get 2 years), or instead what we see here is a bunch of mostly trivial sentences for brutal torture and attempted murder in the nearly beating to death of the victim, even for the father. Do as you please in Sweden. The downside if you are caught is comparatively trivial.

And that guy who dumped the lifeless body of his murder victim in a sewer actually surfed the web to learn of the penalties for murder in Sweden before he went ahead with his killing, which is a perfect demonstration of the lack of deterrence.

To give very slight credit where credit is due, I am pleasantly surprised that two deportations will occur, not because I am racist, but simply because these slightly raise the severity of the punishments, but once again I am absolutely appalled over the heinously idiotic low fine. Why not demand a total fine of 5 million SEK you spineless judges???

(The victim may have been a rapist and kidnapper, which would not encourage me to advocate for more compensation, but I know that a truly innocent victim would also be insulted with a pathetically small fine)..
