EU commission quashes snuff ban rumours

The European Commission in Sweden has repudiated rumours in Swedish media that snuff will be banned as a result of a planned tobacco directive.

“People are jumping to conclusions, we’re only making an analysis at this point,” Pierre Schellekens, Head of Representation at the European Commission in Sweden, told The Local.

He confirmed that the EU directive is something that will come to fruition in several months, and that the commission is merely in the process of assessing the matter.

However, Swedish media has jumped at the possibility that “snus”, or moist snuff, will be banned as a result of it having the same contents as cigarettes. Newspapers are claiming that the directive will lead to the banning of Swedish snuff, something considered to be a cultural heirloom.

Newspaper Aftonbladet featured one snuff manufacturer who believed the end was in sight in light of the directive.

“This means the end for Swedish snuff as we know it today. For us, it affects the whole portfolio, several flavours of which have been around for over 200 years,” said Patrik Hildingsson of the Swedish Match company to the paper.

Schellekens, however, stresses that cigarettes are the main concern for the moment.

“The problem with taste additives in cigarettes, such as with minted cigarettes, is that they are made more attractive to people by the taste,” he said.

“We’re addressing the fact that these additives affect public health. This is what we’re concentrating on.”

Meanwhile, the government plans to fight any proposal against snuff, with the public health minister Maria Larsson, leading the way.

She claims that snuff now has taste extracts rather than additives, as well as alterations to the nicotine content.

“The nicotine content of snuff has been reduced and they have put in taste extracts instead, and it’s really positive that they’ve brought down the content,” she told the TT news agency.

Snus is a moist powder tobacco product, consumed by placing either a pre-packed pouch portion or loose pinch under the lip for extended periods of time.

Health Minister, Maria Larsson plans to fight any proposal.

And she is a minister of health?

well it would be better if they ban cigarets that is revolting like hell

Ban it because you don't like it, ban it because you think it is disgusting women use it (no mention of men so a little sexist there).......not exactly the best reasons to ban something now are they! Bigotted views to say the very least. At least with snus the people that use it are not damaging the health of others (unlike smokers in public areas).

It should definitely be banned: thoroughly disgusting habit - as is smoking, of course. It amazes me how many young people in Sweden smoke and chew this stuff. Irretrievably stupid and unattractive.

Lilsocks. You should look up what bigoted actually means. In fact look up the definition of sexist while you're at it.

They will never ban snus in Sweden. It's like banning wine in France. It will never happen.

CHEW? A comment from someone who obviously does not even know what snus is

Oh wow isn't that picture so very attractive?! NOT!!! So gross!!

Ban cigaretts to begin with. They're dangerous not only to the smoker but the environment as well. However many members of the EU parliament probably are smokers themselves so of course cigarettes won't be banned in the first place.

Opps, sorry! Keep the snus and ban the bag of wind EU!
08:56 April 20, 2012 by rfmann
Yes, it is revolting, and those beaver pouches it gives to folks who stuff that stuff into their cheeks and behind their upper lips look pretty ridiculous, but lilsocks is right --- it's not the job of government to tell people what to do with their bodies.

And if it was, going after people enjoying tobacco plant leaves in one form or another would be pretty far down the list by any rational metric.

As an Aussie who lives in Stockholm, my wife is absolutely stoked that I use snus rather than smoke the 50 odd cigarettes a day I used to in Australia. Personally, I had the University of Queensland Public Health contact me to survey my Swedish Snus use in Australia (as I was importing it at considerable cost) as they were lobbying the Australian Govt to allow importation into Aus as another viable option for smokers to quit cigarettes.

I like snus, I use the extra strong variety, and I think it's a far better option than having to have a smoke every 30 minutes.

Comments here stating it looks ridiculous - I say you are full of sh*t, as unless you have 3 or 4 packed under your lip, no one can tell the difference. Maybe these people who winge about its use have 1. never used the product, and 2. would rather inhale second hand smoke as their preferred option.

I have just lost a best friend to pancreatic cancer. He used snus all his life. Pancreatic cancer has one of the worst survival rates. You should research snus on the net - you will find that current studies are linking snus with pancreatic cancer. I now tell all my snus-using friends and some of them say they already know that there is/maybe a link. I am sorry that a 200 year-old tradition is soon likely to carry a health warning but tobacco itself has a long tradition - it doesn't make it healthy. Please stop using it!

USA and Sweden are the only places where you can buy snus I think. Snus is absolutely the best thing to use when you try to stop smoking. Mant, many people takes a "prilla" instead of other things when they want to quit smoking.

Why stop a habit that has been in Sweden for 200 years. Absolutely Crazy.

It is funny that most people want to ban snus because it is disgusting and looks unattractive. Well if that is the case then you do not need to use it.

however snus saves lives. As those who are addicted to nicotine would have to smoke instead or use ineffective nicotine replacement gum Smoking is well documented as a dangerous way to use tobacco and does affect others around the smoke. Just because you cannot see inside the tar ridden lungs most dont find it disgusting.
