Cop convicted for taking lunch salad bribe

A police officer from western Sweden who agreed to let a beltless motorist off the hook in exchange for a salad has learned the hard way there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Instead, the officer has been convicted of bribery and sentenced to 20,800 kronor ($3,100) in fines, all because he asked for and accepted a 65 kronor salad.

The conviction stems from an incident which took place in September 2011 when the traffic cop stopped a man who was driving without a seatbelt on a Gothenburg-area roadway.

The officer duly informed the offender, a 50-year-old restaurant owner, that he would be fined 1,500 kronor for neglecting to buckle up in accordance with Swedish traffic laws.

The motorist's predicament worsened when he was asked to produce his licence, only to discover it wasn't on his person but was instead in his wallet back at his restaurant, an oversight that would cost him an additional 400 kronor.

Having escorted the offending driver back to his restaurant to inspect his driver's licence, the officer then presented the restaurant owner with what turned out to be a rather indecent proposal.

"The officer said he would forget the fines if he got a salad instead. I normally never give away food for free, but I was happy to avoid paying 1,900 kronor," the man said during the officer's bribery trial, according to the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper.

The officer, however, provided a different version of events, claiming he was "joking" with the restaurant owner when he asked for the salad.

"He gave me the salad anyway," the cop told the court.

"I think we wanted to gain some new customers."

But the incident left the restaurant owner feeling unsettled, so he shared the story with a friend who was also worked for the police, who in turn reported his colleague's actions.

Despite the conviction, which was handed down by the Gothenburg District Court on Thursday, the officer was nevertheless allowed to keep his job after the police's disciplinary board ruled that the offence wasn't serious enough to warrant dismissal.

I don't think there was enough elaboration on this incident but I think an additional 400SEK fine for not having your drivers license while driving is too small. People who are too stupid to have their drivers licenses on their person while driving may lock themselves inside their cars potentially causing harm to themselves and causing inconvenience to others.

The driver should be fined for everything he was due. As for the police officer... I don't know... At the very least it was poor judgement. The few times I have come across police officers here in Sweden they have been reserved, courteous and very professional.

@#1.

In England we are taught not to carry proof of ownership documents in the car because when it gets stolen the thief also has all the appropriate documents to convince the police that the vehicle really is his own property.

In the same vein, we are permitted a period of grace to present our licences to a police station of our choice when required. Probably because Brits have more than one pair of trousers and more than one jacket so It's quite easy to leave things in another suit.

Move to Sweden after 40+ years of driving in the UK, rush out to the shop 10 clicks away for some food item and Hey Presto no documents.

A cop taking a bribe is simply a cop taking a bribe.

To borrow and paraphrase your own diatribe "People who are too stupid to be tolerant should keep their myopic opinions to themselves"

#2, myself being #1 seems all to appropriate in this case as I was taking a p... and you in my opinion are... well I won't spell it out. I would almost be to afraid to ask as you are English, but with regards to myopic...did you forget your reading glasses in another pair of trousers with wallet, keys, driver's license, teeth, etc?

Sounds like the people who leave their license, bank statements, first born, car keys, house keys and their ATM card with the PIN number written on it in the front seat of their car are quite similar to the people who leave home without their wallets, children, money, phone and their dog tied to the rear bumper.

I don't have first hand experience of this foolery, my experience is limited to the misfortunes of others.

If it were not for necks I think some of you people would be stumbling around headless out there.

I feel sorry for the policeman, BUT, being originally a citizen of a country where the bribes have become part of a daily routine, I strongly support this huge fine for such a little crime. I understand, perhaps the policeman was actually joking and didn't think about it as a bribe, but just to create an example for others and to put some fear of the law, it has to be done.

As for the restaurant owner, he is an @sshole

Entry. It is true that u dont necessary need to carry licence in UK. I agree with# 2. That the system is myopic thieves could steal my car and use my details to get away. I could for whatever reason forget my licence, which has happened on several occassions, sometimes due to no faul of mine (family). My point is that there should be bi approached to our laws. Our laws should be tolerant. The funny part is that the police know that i have a licence, though i was not carrying it. They only need to ask some personal questions like one of children 1st and last digits of personal numbers. I dont see this as bribe.

And sometimes you wonder why a cop wont give you a break. Never do a member of the public a favour, they will never forgive you.
