Man charged with stabbing 10-year-old girl

A 28-year-old Swedish man who stabbed a ten-year-old girl in the throat in Gothenburg in February has been formally charged with attempted murder.

Just over a week later, he gave himself up at a consulate in Malaga, and was extradited to Sweden on March 2nd. He was arrested the next day.
The man has confessed to stabbing the girl with a knife, yet admitted that he initially gave himself up thinking he had killed her.
The crime has been labelled as attempted murder, according to the prosecutor Per-Håkan Larsson, who spoke with the TT news agency after the hearing on Friday.
“There is no doubt that he has done this, and he confessed that he stabbed the girl in the neck. I mean, if you knife someone in the throat, you know that it may lead to death,” said Larsson.
However, the attacker only confessed to grievous bodily harm, while the court formally charged him for attempted murder on Friday.
The girl, who wavered between life and death after the attack, has since returned to full health.

How does it work in Sweden is it the attacker who gets to decide what he is charged with based upon his admitting that he did not mean to kill her as the article infers or is it lost in translation a bit?
I`m just guessing but I would say perhaps 8-12 years. Since it was "just" attempting murder and not murder it won`t be for life.
