Swedish teenage girl hurt in freak wolf attack

A fifteen–year-old girl who was visiting Sweden’s Kolmården Safari park a few weeks ago had to be rushed to hospital after one of the wolves suddenly attacked her and bit into her thigh.

“She panicked and it showed, and then one of the wolves bit her,” said Mats Höggren, zoological head of the park to local paper Norrköpings tidningar (NT).

When the attack occurred, the girl was visiting the park out of opening hours with some family members, accompanied by an employee at the park who is a friend of the family.

According to Höggren, the girl’s panicked reaction to seeing the animals was unanticipated as none of the others had realized she was actually scared of the wolves.

“Somehow they weren’t aware of the girl’s fears,” said Höggren to NT.
When she acted frightened, the animal’s natural reaction was to pounce, explained Höggren.

According to daily Aftonbladet, this is not the first time that visitors to Kolmården have been injured when entering the wolf compound.

In 2010, a 21-year-old woman sustained a bite in the arm after entering the wolf area of the park and in 2007, Swedish TV-profile Arne Weise was knocked over by a wolf while visiting the compound.

After the girl was attacked, the park employee called for an ambulance and the girl was taken to a local hospital where the thigh wound was stitched up and dressed. She was later taken to a larger medical facility to undergo treatment with antibiotics. A few weeks later, she is reportedly doing well.

The park is now overseeing its guidelines in regards to the wolf enclosure and the management is now considering raising the age restriction to enter the wolf compound from 15 to older.

people visiting wild animals always crack me up.

its a wolf and yes, given half the chance it is going to try and eat you. period.

hopefully the girl learned an important lesson (don't wuck fith nature) and no harm comes to the wolf.

Im actually kind of surprised they didnt lay waste to every wolf in a 500km radius of that zoo. Seems that is the normal reaction here to something like this.

This goes to show that wolfs feed on humans and that the swedish government was right to allow protective hunting.

@skumdum

If the wolf was trying to feed on her it would more than likely have bitten her in the throat, just saying;)

Raising the age restriction to from 15 and older! Brilliant idea, everybody knows wolves don't bite people older than 15.

Wolves, in their natural environment, do not hunt, bite or eat healthy people; they keep as far away from them as possible. Man-eating wolves are the stuff of fairy tales and fools. They are wild animals and should not be treated, or thought of as pets; particularly dogs.

These particular wolves are kept in a small compound, compelled to live in a group they might not normally live with, and are forced to be in close proximity to humans. They are, to say the least, extremely stressed. Hanging out with wolves in this condition (or in any other condition) is a high-risk activity involving a great deal of maturity, patience and self control. Showing fea to a wolf, at age 15 or older, is an invitation for attack.

The wolf was just being a wolf. The scared 15 year old girl was just being a scared 15 year old girl. The lesson learned; stressed wolves and scared 15 year old girls do not mix. The other lesson learned; some posters here are incredibly ignorant about one of Sweden's most interesting indigenous wild animals, and should take the time to learn more about them.

This wolf park and its employes are incompetent. It is completly there fault. How can it be possible that they are so stupid to let people interact with the wolves and in there compund. This is bad publicity for wolves bwecause of the incompetent stupidity of these people. And to top it of the park was closed and the employe privatly takes these people in. Fire him and change the policy as well as make a public apology taking the blame!

"Freak" wolf, In the US we refer to them as "alternatly-abled"

RobinHood is right this is how it is supposed to work!

however both the wolves and the people often forget their part of the play and stray onto each others turf and when this happens people and wolves get hurt.

my theory is wolves straying on our turf should be shot and people straying on the wolves turf should be eaten (or at least bitten to teach them a lesson...to be fair I guess we should "bite" the wolves first before we shoot them)
