Deserted Swedish homes used to grow cannabis

A growing trend in northern Sweden has seen cheap houses being snapped up by cannabis enthusiasts who use the houses as drug labs, with police shutting down another on Sunday.

Neighbours in Örträsk, northern Sweden, were reportedly glad to see an influx of younger people in their neighbourhood, reported Sveriges Television (SVT).

While things moved along swimmingly at first, a long-forgotten smell wafted through the windows and into the noses of neighbours.

“It started to smell weird. It was a smell that I recognized from my youth,” said Gun Rehnman, a neighbour to one such abandoned house, to SVT.

It turned out that five rooms in the house had been dedicated to cannabis cultivating, and that a man in the family had been taking a masters course in gardening. Plastic sheets covered the windows and strong lights reportedly lit up the rooms.

Police took possession of the house on Sunday.

Local police have pointed to the low prices and relative remoteness of the abandoned houses as a reason the growers have flocked to the region.

“It’s really easy to buy these kinds of houses, and maybe because they’re so remote people think that they can do things undisturbed,” said Inga-Lena Jonasson of the Umeå police.

The trend has been strong lately, with a dozen similar cases having been reported in the past two years.

Just legalize it and get it over with. Everyone knows why, and we all know it's just a matter of time. Well at least Sweden isn't as bad as the US with their war on drugs.

It's a "wasted" revenue source.

I wonder if there is clear data from say Holland, with regard to increased tax revenue from hash and marajuana sales, or if it is merely legally tolerated there, but not controlled like a consumer product with a clear sales and taxation scheme.

I suspect it is merely tolerated there, rather than sold by the bale at the market, particulary because of EU regulations, otherwise the US would get angry and its military would be doing a bunch of intimidating naval excersizes off the Dutch coast.

But anyway would be curious to know if anyone has links on how much Holland saves by not asking their police to chase pot smokers with the maniacal zeal of psychopaths

You can thank the CIA for smuggling in the drugs in the American soldiers coffins during Vietnam!! What a bunch of idiots they are.

@bronc,

Haha, "war on drugs" - if only! There is no war on drugs. Cannabis is potentially a very dangerous poison, and to suggest that it should be made legal is laughable.

@Achilles7

Which drug isn´t harmful ? P l e a s e" alcohol" in system bolaget ? My thinking is better natural growing stuff (canabis, marijuana and so forth than artificial stuff in system bolaget.........

@sureiam

That old chestnut again: alcohol is more dangerous than cannabis. The (obvious) reason alcohol may appear to ruin more lives is because a lot more people drink than smoke dope. If there were as many cannabis smokers as drinkers, you'd notice the effect.

Alcohol, when drank in moderation and sensibly, is harmless. It's the people who abuse it who suffer health problems. Cannabis, on the other hand, is potentially dangerous after consuming only the smallest amount.

Hello Achilles7

Could you please elaborate on your affirmation:

"Cannabis, on the other hand, is potentially dangerous after consuming only the smallest amount."

Did you happen to see that in some scientific article? Well, I leave a link so that you can read and make an informed opinion.
