Fake cop arrested after failed pick-up attempt

A man who in April pretended to be a policeman and asked a “cute” Swedish woman for her phone number was arrested by police on Tuesday for impersonating a police officer.

“We want to make it clear that there was no policeman involved in the incident,” said police spokesperson Jan Jonasson to daily Aftonbladet.

When the incident occurred in late April, police were unsure whether the man was indeed a policeman or not.

At the time, police spokespeople claimed that it would be “ludicrous” if it did indeed turn out to be a member of the police force, and commenced an investigation.

As it turned out, the “policeman” was actually just an ordinary civilian, who Aftonbladet revealed hails from the north Stockholm suburb of Upplands-Väsby.

The man had pulled over the 26-year-old woman, named Angelica, in what she had thought to be an undercover police car.

However, despite having no equipment, badge, or uniform, the man still convinced the woman that she had been driving too fast, but let her off with a warning.

But this exchange didn’t seem to satisfy the infatuated “inspector”, who pulled her over again several minutes later, this time asking for her phone number “just in case something happened”.

Later that night, the woman received a text from the man.

“You got to keep your driving license and you got away without a fine. You were so cute in your blue jeans ;) Can you be in Väsby around 5pm if that works?” the message said, according to the paper.

The next day, the woman reported the matter to police, who have since tracked down the man, arresting him on Tuesday.

The man risks up to two years in prison for impersonating an officer, and is currently detained by police for a series of crimes.

Dear The Local. THANK YOU for pulling the photo of the policeman's torso out of the archive, it has been several weeks since we last saw that picture. I can just imagine the excitement in the newsroom when you realised that you would be publishing a piece which contained the word "police", and would thus have a perfect opportunity once again to apply such a fitting image to one of your articles.

Dear Hauhr,

You're very welcome to read this FREE online news site. Maybe you could get off your own lazy arse and set up your own website whereby you don't reuse images, possibly go out around Sweden and take photos of different police officers' torsos so the same image is (heaven forbid) reused. Possibly get a female torso or two, throw some diversity into the visuals of the article.

Stop moaning! The local are doing a great job!

Regards,

re "fake cops" we had an experience just recently, south of Gävle. We were travelling late at night and got stuck behind an SUV travelling at 30 in a 50 zone. I thought they were drunk. We and another car overtook them as soon as possible (entering a 70 zone), the car then proceeded to tail us with high beam on, before finally turning off the road.

When we got home (about 1am) my sambo's mobile phone called and the person identified themselves as a police officer, asked if she'd been driving the car with our registration number, and informed her she had been speeding and driving dangerously and they would be visiting her the next day to discuss her driving.

We called the police straight away to query this as this sounded weird. They confirmed they had no cars on the road that night and this was not normal operations.

It seems pretending to be a police officer is a common past-time for idiots in this country, aided and abetted by the ease of looking up a car's owner and their phone number on the internet.

Wow sounds like it is pretty easy to take a license plate number and look up the owner's personal information. That is scary!! We are also dealing with a person pretending to be a cop and is killing people here in the States as I type this. Very scary situation.

When this happens in corrupt countries, it's usually to get bribes from unsuspecting drivers so the fake police doesn't write them a fine. In some countries, it's not even clear why you were stopped by the police. I remember in 1980's when we were stopped by police in Turkey, multiple times, for stupid reasons such as not having the local currency: Turkish Lira, or not having a Turkish number plate.
