Woman's uterus bursts during childbirth

A woman has reported a hospital in southern Sweden to the health authorities after doctors failed to notice that her uterus had burst, leaving half of her unborn child inside her abdominal cavity.

The incident occurred when the woman was giving birth to her third child at a women’s clinic in Skåne’s university hospital in Lund, wrote the local Sydsvenskan newspaper.

Her other two children had been born through vaginal and caesarian birth, and when the most recent birth was not going as planned, hospital workers were cautious of undertaking the delicate task of performing a second c-section.

But when the woman complained that something felt “weird” in her stomach some nine hours into the birth, and when doctors noticed a corresponding slowing in the child’s heartbeat, it was decided that a Caesarian must be performed, wrote the paper.

Upon performing the emergency surgery, doctors noticed that the woman’s placenta had partially detached and that the unborn child’s arm, umbilical cord, and shoulder were protruding into the woman’s abdominal cavity.

Eva Ranklev Twetman, chief doctor at the hospital refers to the incident as a “complication” rather than a medical injury.

“Now, the clinic will tighten up in the area of for which we've been criticized and re-examine our procedures,” she told the paper.

A uterine rupture is rare, and can pose risks for both the mother and child, wrote the paper.

The child suffered from oxygen deficiency and needed emergency care to prevent brain damage, yet is now “recovering satisfactorily,” according to Sydsvenskan.

That poor woman and her baby! I hope the baby didn't suffer any brain damage from the lack of oxygen! Idiot doctors!

Well, they almost got the medical facts right.

VBAC(vaginal birth after cesarian) is risky business. The uterine wall is weakened by an initial c-section making a subsequent vaginal delivery dangerous. The complication, as described in the news report, is a ruptured uterus which immediately deprives the baby of oxygen.

The article was incorrect when it noted "the delicate task of a repeat c-section." Statistically speaking, a VBAC is much more dangerous than a repeat c-section.

With malpractice dominating the medscape in the USA, VBACs are a rare event.

well said krodman

yeah folks, Doctors don't as yet have xray vision, so can't be blamed for this!

and if blame is to be afforded it goes to the last doctor who did the c-section.

bit of a silly story really did it really break during child birth? evidently not , as the baby was still inside!

any how was it the baby who broke out or was it the mother who broke herself?

surely she would have felt it happen!

if it was the medical staff fault then they must have unusual procedures there!

Here we go again with the Swedish Medical system.................More doctors needed as it is most Doctors I meet are mostly stressed to long working hours..... My C-section for my 3rd baby was damn long wait b4 I saw the doctors come , it was midnite and he kept mentioning about his long duty hours, lol.............too much.

@ Da Goat do you think you would realize it if someone kicked you in the nuts and your nut broke in half?!! I mean don't you think the pain would be unbearable?! The woman was already in incredible pain from the labor so she might not have realized that her uterus ruptured because of the pain she was already in. And you can't "break yourself"!! The entire problem is the woman shouldn't have been made to wait so long before the doctors attempted the C-section. Plus with her previous medical past of already having a C-section she should have been scheduled for a C-section automatically it would have been safer for both the mother and baby.

In the UK VBAC is lauded as some kind of holy grail. After my twins (C-section) I got a letter from the obstetrician to tell me that, 'under the right circumstances we would permit a trial of labour and an attempt at VBAC' as if she were offering me a lovely gift.

I can't imagine what the 'right circumstances' would be.

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass.
