Cheap Norway nappies smuggled via Sweden

A gang of Lithuanian diaper smugglers is using Sweden as a transit country to ferry cheap nappies bought in Norway for resale at a stiff markup in eastern Europe.

While Norway is generally known for high-priced consumer goods, when it comes to diapers, Sweden's neighbour to the west looks like a relative bargain.

In Norway, a pack of diapers costs about the equivalent of 25 Swedish kronor ($3.50). In Lithuania, on the other hand, a pack of new nappies can set parents back 120-140 kronor, the Aftonbladet newspaper reports.

But a group of enterprising smugglers believed to be based in Lithuania have made a concerted effort to exploit the sizeable price differential by transporting thousands of diapers from Norway through Sweden en route to points of sale in eastern Europe.

"We think it's an organized operation," Norwegian customs official Bjørn Sørli told the newspaper.

In April, Norwegian customs stopped two suspected nappy smugglers in Tröndelag, a region in north central Norway which borders on the Swedish county of Jämtland.

The two were found to be transporting diapers worth 44,000 Norwegian kroner ($7,350).

And just last Saturday, a truck was stopped near the Swedish border carrying a load of diapers with an estimated street value of more than 200,000 kronor reportedly purchased at a discount shopping centre in Norway and believed to be destined for Lithuania.

"Someone is earning good money doing this, The drivers have a shopping list with them when they come to Norway and buy what's been ordered," Sørli told Aftonbladet.

Not exactly the crime of the century is it? Would you prefer them to be smuggling drugs?
08:50 May 24, 2012 by bourgeoisieboheme
If they were truly "enterprising" they would fly to china, set up meetings with diaper producers, and import them legally by the cargo container into Lithuania. Driving a truck full of them from Norway... amateur.

This is potentially a load of crap.

The cowboy hats gave them away.

Hang on a second, why is is it a crime or "smuggling" to buy some nappies in Norway, then sell them in Eastern Europe?

Is was not aware that you can smoke or drink them - is there some kind of bizarre nordic "nappy duty"?

Crap article

I guess that I am lacking in exporting laws but I would not have realised that it was smuggling.

Same here... How is -investing- time, gas and material... smuggling? What is illegal about this?

The diapers are legal, bought in a legal store with legal money. Transported in a legal car ( I would assume that or they would have said otherwise ) where does it become illegal?

If I buy something for $5 and want to sell it to you for $50, it's up to the buyer to fork over the money if they like... nothing is being forced...

this is some bullsh....

How dare they try to make a profit on a perfectly harmless product.

Can't believe all the naive comments, asking why it's a crime.

Is there a shortage of diapers in Eastern Europe?

What a non story.

It seems these Lithuanians (only organized-criminals) are all over western europe. Recently, Danish police accused them of mass burglary in denmark. Danish authorities went so far to tell that... "Middle and West Jutland Police have clearer statistics about the prevalence of foreign criminals and report that every third person they arrest is from Lithuania. They currently have 32 Lithuanians in custody"
