Over 20,000 ‘fake’ sandals to be destroyed

Tens of thousands of imitation sandals stored at a Swedish outlet will have to be destroyed after the district court deemed them to be too similar to the popular sandals “Crocs", yet shoe-sellers have protested that it is a waste of a useful product.

The factory, in Örnsköldsvik, northern Sweden, had nearly 21,000 imported sandals sitting in their basement for five years until Stockholm’s district court made the decision on Tuesday that the shoes must be destroyed, according to Sveriges Radio (SR).

The court claimed that the shoes, which were to be sold under the brand name of “Hoppet" were too similar to the popular light-weight sandals “Crocs" and that the shoes could not be sold in Sweden.

Outraged workers have claimed that the shoes should be sent somewhere that could make use them, rather than seeing a good product put to waste.

“It’s really sad to see such a waste of well-functioning footwear,” said Lennart Eriksson, spokesman of Hoppet told SR.

“You can’t just dump 20,000 pairs of shoes somewhere, it would be chaos.”

Eriksson suggested that the shoes could be put to good use in a country such as Latvia, as he explains that such a “truly poor” country may have a need for them, wrote SR.

I agree that these sandals should not be destroyed as they could be used for the more needy....but I am a bit offended by the "poor Latvia" insult!

This is pretty ridiculous. You can't just "destroy" shoes that have already been made. Complete waste of resources. Sweden aims to be green when possible right...?

This is just to keep the ridiculously Croccs high price. This idea that Sweden is environment friendly is Bulls--t.

Latvia doesn't want you stinky plastic crap shoes! This will teach you to make your own invention in foot wear next time, %$&*#@$! trolls...

If they sold or gave them away, they'd only do more damage to the brand they were going to imitate.

Hopefully they can recycle them back to raw material to be used for new manufacturing.

someone could get over the Latvia comment- and put in a call to the district court to try to stop the BS..( well, I guess I can be that person....)I can only imagine the places in this world, the charities that could truly use and benefit from these shoes. Absolute idiocy...and pathetic. I'd love to see this story be exploited so people can see how much bull-headed idiocy goes on in this country in reality.... really.

They should send the fake Gucci bags as well to Latvia. Then the Latvians can use them for berry picking before the winter comes.

LOL!!! I actually have a pair of the Hoppet shoes!!!!! I got them in the USA at a close out store called Tuesday Morning. I got them for $6. Way cheaper than Crocs. And pretty much exactly the same as Crocs, the only difference being the name molded into them. They look like they were made out of the exact same mold, just altered to change the name. I guess it is OK to sell them in the US, but not in Sweden.

Hello guys,

According to official statistics: Lavia, Lithuania and Estonia are doing very well in providing their domestic markets with shues as well as with wide range of bags and suitcases. Domestic producers are fully capabale of meeting demand and also exporting their production to other countries i.e. Sweden.

Therefore "truly reach" Swedend could take care of countries that are at the bottom of the list of Human development indexes. - they might need the help indeed.

"Poor Latvia"... Hell yeah, you are so kind man.. Keep them, burn them, or send them to Ethiopia or somewhere else in 3nd world country! I am latvian, and i feel really angry about this stupid phrase! Ok, we all know that economics and life in Sweden is much better in Sweden than in Baltic states, but c'mon, dont be absurd...

For Goodness Sake ! the court should order them to be distributed to the 20,000 Poorist Families in Sweden !

I just dont get it , We All Know Now that the poor people of the world pay the most taxes , Yes Taxes that actually keep the court system going and pay all the politicians judges bankers etc etc

Blessed Are The Meek For The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth

@viennacalling Hello! it will cost more money then the shoes are worth to distribute them, I hope you were joking.

And how should they find the 20,000 most poorest people in Sweden? Sorry, you are one of the poorest people in Sweden but we don't have your size in that model, can we interest you in another model perhaps?

The good news is they float, so if they just attach the pair with zipline and set them off to sea they could reach the coast of Africa in a few years. They could even make a study about it funded by the government of course to see how they move in the world's ocean currents. I see a Nobel Prize getting its foot in the door on this one,

Just to say, this angered me enough, that I called the Courts in Stockholm, which,- shock! -do not call me back although I know the case was handled in avdelning 5 if that matters.

But i did also call Crocs thinking as they were the instigators in the suit they might have some measure of control over the end result of the suit which they won...( and I know that they have a reputation for being ruthless about knockoffs of their brands) - to see if they couldnt'do something about it. While after two days of calls i'm still to really get an answer other than everyone agreeing with me ( in theory) that they should be shipped off - to some poor country where people have to walk barefoot for a whole day just to get filthy drinking water for thier families. The answer I have so far from Crocs, is they would need to be destroyed becuase if someone had an accident in the knock-offs, they might get sued...

I reminded them that people that are worried simply about getting drinking water probably did not have a whole lot of money saved up to bring a law suit to Crocs for a sprained ankle...and I'll get another call back. Face it , they'll burn them and the toxins will infest our fair swedish countryside with air pollution. whatever....

ok, @viennacalling, all joking aside I'm trying to see this from your side. I do wish that all the shoes would go to the needy, but it is just not going to happen. and these are my realistic points I would like to pose with my brain matter.

1. who will pay for the shipping the shoes to the 20,000 needy?

2. who will pay for the distribution process of these shoes?

3. if the State makes a precedent of distribution confiscated goods will this open up the Pandora box of all confiscated goods (remember points 1 & 2 here)

4. can Crocs then sue the State for distributing fake products?

5. storage cost for the shoes

I sympathizer with your willingness and others to do good in this world, but the best bet is to buy a pair of TOMS. c o m shoes, for every pair you buy they will give one pair to charity.
