Assange's mother fearful of Swedish prison

The mother of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says she is fearful a British court will allow his extradition to Sweden, claiming "the biggest governments in the world are gunning for him".

Assange, 40, will learn Wednesday whether he will be sent to Sweden where he is wanted for questioning over allegations of rape and sexual assault, when the Supreme Court hands down its judgement in the complex case.

His mother Christine Assange, who has jetted to London for the decision by Britain's highest court, which is her son's last avenue of appeal following numerous legal battles, said waiting for the ruling was a painful experience.

"It's a 24-hour nightmare because we know he is not safe and the biggest governments in the world are gunning for him," she told Australia's Network Seven late Tuesday.

"If the decision is against him, within 10 days he will be in a Swedish prison."

Assange shot to global fame after his WikiLeaks site enraged Washington by leaking thousands of secret US documents on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The site later leaked thousands of US diplomatic cables.

He believes his extradition to Sweden could pave the way for extradition to the US on possible espionage or conspiracy charges relating to the leaked documents.

His mother said the rape and sexual assault allegations against her son, who has been under virtual house arrest in London for more than a year without charge, were unfounded.

"I don't believe they're true and neither does anybody else," she said.

Nevertheless, she fears her son's extradition to Sweden, believing he could be held "incommunicado, in solitary confinement, before he is even questioned or charged".

She said the legal process he had been subjected to had been "extremely unfair" and that she was even more concerned about what would happen if he was sent to the United States.

"How I feel? I feel a mix of anger, outrage and fear," she said.

Australia, which has come under pressure from Assange's supporters to step up its support for him, is a close ally of the US and Prime Minister Julia Gillard has previously slammed WikiLeaks as "grossly irresponsible".

But Foreign Minister Bob Carr downplayed the prospect of Washington seeking
to extradite Assange.

"We've seen no evidence that such an indictment exists," Carr said.

"We've no advice that the US has an intention to extradite Mr Assange."

Assange was detained in December 2010 on a European arrest warrant relating to allegations he raped one woman by having sex with her while she was asleep, and sexually assaulted another, in Sweden.

The former computer hacker insists the sex was consensual and the allegations politically motivated.

His case rests on a single point - that the Swedish prosecutor who issued a warrant for his arrest was not a valid judicial authority.

Don't think this is " last avenue of appeal ", per se, for Mr Assange..

He can still take his case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), as long as he appeals to it within 14 days, and that court agrees to hear the appeal.

I expect Mr Ahmed Agiza, and Mr Mohammed Alzery's mothers were a bit concerned too. Despite this maternal concern, Messrs Agiza and Alzery were illegally handed over by Sweden to the CIA, without arrest, trial or due process and within hours of their kidnapping, rendered to Egypt where they were tortured and then imprisoned for 10 years.

Incredibly, at the same time lawyers representing Sweden were reassuring the English Court of Appeal that Mr Assange would be safe in its care, Sweden was negotiating a large compensation package for Mr Agiza for kidnapping him from the street, binding him with silver tape, and delivering him blindfolded and trussed like a chicken to an American CIA plane at Arlanda airport for a midnight flight to Hell.

I'm sure Mr Assange's mother has nothing to worry about. As its lawyers piously said in court, Sweden would never do a secret deal with the Americans to illegally hand over a valuable prisoner. Who would imagine such a thing?

I believe they already completed that process and was rejected.

I just wish they would get on with it, anyone who looks as smug as he does deserves a lifetime in jail, perhaps a little water boarding too.

Funny, his mother doesn't belive the rape charge, even after he was taped and filmed on public press saying "Yes she said no but I didn't believe her"... thereby screwing almost any chances his lawyers had of making a decent case on his behalf...

Swedish prison: incommunicado, solitary confinement... hmmm I guess his mother doesn't know much about the Swedish luxury hotel prison system does she?

Moral ?? Don't screw with U.S.(us) !! Notice: Our-see first/kill first IS faster than your Se. first/kill first !! You can pick up the silver medal if able!!!

gpafledthis - hmmmm "see first, kill first" - this attitude is one of the reasons that US has gotten itself into such a mess in recent years, isolating itself politically in areas of the world that do matter, and where dangers lurk.

The problem is that in the "good old days" governments could, and did, do all kinds of "unconventional" or "leagally questionable" things and no one would ever know. Now, with the internet, social media etc etc this is impossible - people will find out eventually, with or without Wikileaks.

Anyway, when was the last time the US won a war? (dont count WW1 and WW2 as you turned up late when everyone else was knackered!). The US's record is almost as bad as Italy's !!!

no one cares about the USA. except maybe sweden.which speaks volumes about them.

Assange should look at his one-way flight ticket.

Bet it will say "Change at Arlanda for Dulles, Washington".

Moral: don't play stink-finger with the CIA.
