Let convicted HIV doc keep working: hospital

A Swedish doctor with HIV who was convicted for having unprotected sex should be allowed to keep practicing, hospital management has argued, prompting a group of employees to slam the move as "unethical".

Karolinska Universtity Hosptial in Solna, north of Stockholm, continues to have confidence in the doctor despite the fact that he knew he was infected with the virus that causes AIDS when he had unprotected sex with several partners.

The doctor never divulged his condition to his partners, one of whom later tested positive for HIV.

Following his conviction for endangering the life of another, the doctor was initially sentenced to ten months in prison, a punishment that was later reduced to four months.

The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) is currently examining whether the doctor should be stripped of his licence to practice medicine in the wake of his conviction.

But in a letter written to the health board, Karolinska's Chief Medical Officer Ann-Britt Bolin Wiechel argues that the doctor has "support from me and my highest management" for continuing to work at the hospital after serving his sentence.

The doctor has written that he has no plans to appeal the verdict and that he, in his capacity as a doctor, has never taken any risks or lacked judgment in carrying out his duties.

But in an anonymous letter sent to the Dagens Nyheter (DN) daily, a group of Karolinska employees expressed their concerns about management's efforts to allow the doctor to keep working at the hospital.

The group labeled as "unethical and irresponsible" the move to allow the HIV-positive and convicted doctor to continue at Karolinska.

"How would patients and their families react when being treated by a doctor who so recklessly showed that he neglected the very essence of human dignity?" the letter reads.

The National Board of Health and Welfare is expected to issue a ruling on the matter with a few weeks, according to DN.

Terrible, thats the reputation of the Karolinska down the drain, & he only got 4 montsh for destroying these peoples lives ! its beyond belief. The judges who passed this sentence shouldl be publicly exposed & sacked.

As th French would say " c'est incroyable " voila !

I believe the hypocratic oath begins with 'First: Do no harm'.

The 4 month sentence, for knowingly infecting others with HIV, which could lead to a prolonged and hideous death by AIDS, is an insult to humanity.

This doctor has no shame, and Sweden's cosmically cruel disregard for the rights of victims of violent or injurious crime is absolutely appalling.

In older news, a medical student convicted of murder was expelled from KI.

What else than murder (albeit slow) is unprotected sex when HIV positive??

Double standards.

If the 47-year-old anastesiologist-and-death-vector Thomas Majing was educated in Sweden, then evil beurocrats such as Wiechel (and the judge?) might be acting to protect the state's investment. Outrageous, all around. Thank you to those who drafted the DN letter.

There must be a doctor shortage in Sweden for the hospital management to appeal the medical bureaucracy for the good doctor to practice.

The previous blogger is correct about the country.

Here in the States if you don't tell someone you are HIV and you willing infect them with HIV you will be arrested.

If this doctor is willing infecting people with HIV he should be arrested!

According to a 2011 TL story, a woman in Sweden was sentenced to 2.5 years plus $60,000 and possible deportation (up to ten years) for infecting a man with HIV while she knew she carried the disease.

(And just for added comparison, a U.S. man was just sentenced to ten years and $10,000 for infecting a woman.)

Doctors in Sweden often seem to be an uber-class outside the law.

The old boy network going strong. @ libertarianism agree w/you. There seems to be a very obvious trend in Swedish "justice" - there is one (very relaxed) law for men and a much harsher one for women. Is Karolinska going to stand behind the guy who ate his wife's lips for "honor"? Sweden needs to reevaluate its judges.

Wonder how much longer than his doctor Assange will get in the big house for his "sex by surprise" (even though he has not officially been convicted, but he's guilty a priori in Sweden anyway)

Hey, at least he did not cut off and eat his wife's lips, like the other doctor.

At Karolinska they seem to be really good at hiring the right people!
