'We are not interested in Assange': US envoy

Published: 31 May 12 08:09 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/41156/20120531/

The US ambassador to Australia has dismissed suggestions Washington wants WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange extradited to America, as his mother on Thursday accused Canberra of failing to help her son.

Britain's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that Assange, an Australian national, can be extradited to Sweden, although his deportation was put on hold to give his lawyers a final chance to reopen the case.

Assange is wanted by Stockholm over sex crime allegations but he fears
being sent to Sweden could pave the way for extradition to the US on possible
espionage or conspiracy charges.

But the US ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, said there was no plan to seek his extradition from Sweden.

"It's not something that the US cares about. It's not interested in it," he told state broadcaster ABC in comments aired Thursday.

"And frankly if he is in Sweden then there is a less robust extradition relationship than there is between the US and the UK.

"So I think it's one of those narratives that has been made up. There is nothing to it."

Close US ally Australia has come under pressure from Assange's supporters to provide him with more support after Prime Minister Julia Gillard previously slammed WikiLeaks as "grossly irresponsible".

His mother claimed Canberra had done the bare minimum.

"(They have been) absolutely useless, in fact contrary to help, they've done everything they can to smear Julian and hand him up to the US," she told the ABC from London after jetting out this week for the court verdict.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr rejected the criticism, saying Assange was receiving regular visits from Australian consular staff.

"He gets the full Australian consulate support available to any Australian caught up in the legal processes of another country," he said, adding that Australia's hands were tied.

"We can't interfere with the legal processes of another country," Carr said.

The former computer hacker has been fighting deportation since his arrest
in London in December 2010 on the European arrest warrant issued by Sweden.

The 40-year-old does not deny having sex with two WikiLeaks volunteers in Sweden while attending a seminar, but insists it was consensual and argues there are political motives behind the attempts to extradite him.

Britain's Supreme Court is his final avenue of appeal under British law, after
two lower courts ruled he should be sent to Sweden for questioning.

The court ruled on Wednesday that Assange can be extradited, but put his deportation on hold to give his lawyers a final 14 days to reopen the case.

Bradley Manning will be pleased. Up until now, he was threatened with the death penalty for allegedly cooperating with Assange. Now a senior US state department official has declared the whole thing "not something that the US cares about. It's not interested in it," I expect Manning will be released immedietly.

If he isn't, it makes it hard to believe the embassador is telling us the truth.

This is a different event... Bradley broke the law of the US Military for his part in it, no ifs or bugs or shades between. It was very clear cut.. Assange did not personally accept what was given, he just provided the mechanics to distriblute it. A minor crime overall.

Much like a drug chain... Assange is the pusher, but the supplier is the real problem.

There appears to be an initial intent to avoid legal extradition procedures to the US, but Romney, if elected, could abruptly announce that Sweden must hand over Assange or face economic sanctions (recall that the Afghan war justification was basically that the Taliban did not want to hand over Bin Laden and his friends).

The other burning question is: what precisely will Hillary Clinton be here to discuss with the Swedish government when she visits Sweden?
09:42 May 31, 2012 by expatjourno
Yeah, foxpur, the truth is JUST LIKE a drug. A real problem for fans of militarism, profits for death merchants, the plutocracy and imperialists. Because it could be addicting. What if people started demanding MORE of it? Where would your friends be then?

Julian Assange and Bradley Manning should share the Nobel Peace Prize. They are heroes. And they have done more for humanity than Barack Obama, the man who transformed torture from a war crime to a policy dispute n the U.S., ever has or ever will.

Webarchive revealed that one of the accusers had (before she hastily removed it) listed rape accusations as a great method for any and all women to get revenge on their ex-boyfriends.

When she found out that Assange had been with another girl in Sweden, she contacted the other girl, and, within a matter of hours the two reported Assange for rape with the Swedish police.

In other words, this does not appear to fall under the classic definiton of 'rape' in the rest of the Western world.

Chances of a fair trial in Sweden.. 0.00000001% He will proobably get life for something he never did.

Considering this week, a guy got 2 years for "hacking" his exs facebook..Imagine what a real hacker would get 500 years or so, and thats even without the fake rape charges. Although he wont get a sentence as strong as the "ultimate evil" file sharers.. Bu the can be happy to know that murders, rapings, armed robbers will get off with far lighter sentences

#4 You are mistaken about Obama. It was Bush who implemented those policies not Obama. Get your facts right
16:15 May 31, 2012 by Carbarrister
Manning should get the death penalty. I don't care about Assange. Give him the Nobel peace Prize. Obama received it and then proceeded to convert Bush's capture terrorists and interrogate by waterboarding program into a "hit list" and kill not capture program. A real man of peace.

there is a reason nearly no australians live in sweden and dump their swedish girlfriends back in oz. these 2 women involved are a classic example of shallow bitter swedish girls. the fake facade can only get you so far. will the swedes hand over assange? - absolutely. sweden isnt even a country just an american minor state. you eat, live, breath america. you WILL DO what ever america tells you to do.

I didnt realise the swedish flag was red white and blue with stars and stripes until I arrived in sweden and saw it EVERYWHERE.

All we can do now is speculate and wait to see what actually happens in Sweden.

I hope Sweden knows and understands that the world will be watching closely to understand if this is a political sting & payback operations regarding Wikileaks or if this is how Swedish laws handle rape allegations.

I personally feel that this is all about politics and has little to do with real justice. If that is the case, it will come out in the trail and in the history books. If that happens, Sweden will never be viewed the same again.

In Truth the US want His Balls ! I do not agree with what he did but it did confirm to the Free People of the World just what the US and the axis of evil are like ! The US shole Clean Up their ACT before it is too late ! period..

In other news today, the US announced it was "totally relaxed" about Iran having nuclear weapons, and described itself as "laid back" over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. When a journalist questioned the wisdom of this policy, a state department official said "whatever, take a chill pill man".

The village idiot could figure out that if the U.S. wanted Assange that badly, all they had to do was get the U.K., (which are more tightly aligned with the U.S. than Sweden), to extradite him from there.

On the other hand, i wouldn't advise Assange to book a flight to New York city any time in the hear future.

BTW, i'm LMAO off at all the paranoid tin haters on this thread

@Robinhood

Bradley Manning should be executed by firing squad at sun rise for the crime of treason on public television for all to see.

As far as Assange goes or the charges that have been brought forth against him here in Sweden I see no relation with any claims or non-claims by other countries. There are valid EU warrants issued. Sweden has a justice system. Assange must have his day in court.

Neither the rich nor the LEFTIST radicals such as Assange that titillate the peanut gallery are not above the law.

I do not believe at this time that he will be convicted but I recognize that his actions were reprehensible. Assange had a one night stand with a woman in which he practiced safe sex. The next morning he forcefully rolled the same woman over and forcefully engaged in unsafe sex. This was wrong but will be darn hard to prove. I believe there is a second case by another woman but I am unaware of the details.

The admitted Treason by Bradley Manning and the rape charges against Assange in Sweden are unrelated.
