Man fined for thinking dynamite was sausage

A Swedish man charged for possessing several sticks of dynamite claimed in court he was innocent as he thought the explosives were sausages.

The 50-year-old man was on trial on Malmö on charges of possessing illegal explosives, the Metro newspaper reported.

The charges were filed after police came across four kilogrammes of dynamite hidden in a plastic bag in the man's flat.

The man claimed, however, that the bag wasn't his but had instead been left by an acquaintance.

Furthermore, the man explained, he figured the long, cylindrical items contained in the plastic bag were simply sausages.

Police bomb experts, however, deemed the bag's explosive contents to be a serious danger to the man and his neighbours.

Had the dynamite detonated, it could have been devastating for the entire area, according to police.

The man later admitted that recognized the charges were dynamite because he had, on previous occasions used dynamite to "blow holes in the ice" when going fishing during the winter.

However, the Malmö district court didn't buy the man's explanation for why he had the explosives in his flat and never contacted police.

The man was found guilty of illegal possession of explosives and fined the equivalent of 60 days' pay.

I'll need to run this article back through Google translate to get the actual meanings of the article...

"serious danger the man and his neighbours"

"fined the equivalent of 60 day pay"

Where are the editors? :)

this is weird !

if they looked liked sausage then they are probably quite safe, if they look like the classic fire cracker (ie have detonation devices in built then it is slightly more dangerous) the most dangerous things in this account are the police and the neighbors (Malmo)

Explosives funny enough don't just detonate spontaneously !

Da Goat #4:

Unless it's a old 'sweating' dynamite... with the nitro leaking they can be very dangerous.

That's not a stick of dynamite in my pocket, I'm just very happy to see you :)

I always wondered why the English called sausages "bangers" as in "bangers and mash" this is the most plausible reason..... it must be correct....

Dynamite and non-sport fishing is not that common anymore but I know for a fact it is still done. Standing on freshly dynamited ice...is something I do not think I would be a willing participant. Aside from standing on shattered ice I think you would have lots of dead fish just under the ice surrounding your freshly blown up hole.

@foxpur you have me thinking. Do they even manufacture the old nitroglycerine based dynamite anymore? When they say dynamite I think it is like when they say make a Xerox copy.

@entry,

I don't think so. They pretty much have to use a blasting cap now.

Wow. So now thought crime has a penalty. The head line is wonderful! "Man fined for /thinking/ ..." as axiom said in #1 does anyone think about these headlines in The Local or are the staff all down the local instead?

What is the penalty for criminal stupidity? In court, I mean. In the real world, such stupidity often leads to death.

My question is what was the reason for the police search of this man's home in the first place?
