Stockholm sees coldest June day in 84 years

Stockholm broke an 84-year-old cold record on Saturday, as the capital's temperature only reached 6 degrees Celsius, the lowest June maximum daily temperature the city has seen since 1928.

“This is a pretty sharp contrast to the warm weather we've just seen,” Lovisa Andersson, meteorologist at meteorological institute SMHI said to news agency TT.

Indeed, you could be excused for thinking that the current chill is more like winter than summer. It was actually colder in the capital yesterday than on Christmas Eve.

"The temperature was a degree lower than it was at Christmas in Stockholm, so it is colder. And it's windier, too," said SMHI's meteorologist Lisa Frost to newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

The less than balmy temperatures are likely to last a few more days yet, warned SMHI.

The cold is expected to last at least for the first couple of days of next week, and much of the country will continue to be covered by rainclouds on Monday and Tuesday.

However, by the coming weekend the temperatures may rise once more, hitting 20 degrees Celsius in many parts of Sweden, according to SMHI.

The country’s southern-most areas have the best chance of sun.

Stockholm isn’t alone in the unusually harsh weather for the season. June kicked off with up to 20 centimetres of snow and several degrees below freezing in parts of northern Sweden.

The global warming in action! ;)
15:14 June 3, 2012 by StockholmSam
@rise

You are probably right. Thanks to the warmer temperatures melting permafrost and other freshwater resources around the world, the salt content and temperature of the oceans is being altered, possibly causing the ocean currents to slow down. Those currents (such as the Gulf stream) are responsible for bringing mild temperatures to Sweden and distributing other climate patterns around the globe. But it seems the weather has become much less stable, much less predictable, throughout much of the world these days.

@StockholmSam

So 84 years ago there was another global warming?

Because then there was another cold day in June.

And last week, was it another cold age? I was wearing shorts in Sthlm.

You dont prove global warming because one day is cold. You use averages over periods lasting 10 to 30 years to prove it. One day/week/month/year is statistical noise.

Great useless discussion guys.

You can't prove that global warming is happening or not by taking a temperature on a particular day on a particular place on earth.

There is overwhelming evidence global warming is happening and even that it is our fault. Serious scientists who are not on te payroll of exxon know this. The only reason there is doubt is economic.

I have very sad news for all the elite people at the top who would like to think they can control the planet earth

the earth is far too big and billions of years ago began this cycle that even the very best scientists will never predict

Stockholm Sam: If you argue that cooling is proof of warming, you must explain how you can distinguish cooling that comes from cooling from cooling that comes from warming and conduct a rigorous test of falsification based on that method of distinction. This, of course, is the very crux of the matter, and the very task that global warming alarmists avoid. What is so exceptionally annoying about the whole global warming nonsense is the fact that, ten or fifteen years down the road when even the braindead lefties give up on this farce, the hysterics won't admit that they were wrong, or they will claim they can't be faulted because the deceptive evidence fooled them. Wrong: they never approached the evidence in a rigorous, scientific fashion. If they had, they would have quickly falsified the thesis. Instead, they claimed all cooling is a sure sign of warming.

All this has nothing to do with Global Warming, it is no more than a natural occurrence.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/06/02/1930s_greenland_glacier_retreat/

Recently unearthed photographs taken by Danish explorers in the 1930s show glaciers in Greenland retreating faster than they are today, according to researchers.

Taken together the pictures show clearly that glaciers in the region were melting even faster in the 1930s than they are today, according to Professor Jason Box, who works at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State uni.
