Woman killed 38 kittens in her freezer

A woman from southern Sweden who killed dozens of newborn kittens by placing them in a freezer has been convicted of animal cruelty.

Over a three year period, the woman took newborn kittens and placed them in her freezer shortly after they were born, the Aftonbladet newspaper reported.

The woman explained her actions by claiming that she was too poor to have the kittens properly euthanized by a veterinarian.

In order to go through with the repeated kitten killings, the woman drank alcoholic beverages before she then placed the newborn cats in plastic bags and put them in her kitchen freezer.

She was then forced to leave the room to escape the sound of the kittens' woeful meowing.

All told, the woman killed 38 kittens by freezing and suffocating them to death, according to the paper.

During her trial in the Kalmar District Court, the woman admitted to taking the kittens' lives, but argued that she didn't want them to suffer.

But veterinary officials from the country administrative board told the court the young animals had indeed been subjected to long and painful deaths.

The court convicted the woman, slapping her with fines and a suspended sentence for animal cruelty.

In addition, the county administrative board has banned the woman from owning pets, prohibiting her from having her own pet or taking care of others' pets.

I think such a person is just someone who has violated the laws, such a person is mentally ill and should be treated.

Might have been better to get the cat seen to, or at least put it on the pill.

Seems like European crisis is finally reaching Sweden too. One have to save for the future...

#4 That's the problem here in Sweden, it seems that anyone who commits any crime is automatically consideed mentally ill. No wonder so many people get away with murder. And the poor mentally ill patients who are the ones who really do need help can't proper treatment because the mental hospitals are full of criminals, so these poor people are pumped full of pills and sent home.

It's quite expensive to get pets neutered in Sweden which prevents many people from doing so. Most people around us just drowned unwanted kittens. Frankly, I find that too distasteful so we got our cats neutered even though it cost three times what it costs in the US.

The punishment is quite disgusting and just shows Sweden has no backbone, had this incident happened in multiple western counties, she would be seeing the inside of a jail, this isn't one incident, but the murder of 38 kittens over a period of time. I have no respect for Swedish law when sentences like this are handed out.

She had enough money for "alcoholic beverages", they are not that cheap either.

Sweden's "justice" and health care systems appear to be in a race for the bottom.

Are there no programs to help people (who otherwise can't afford it) pay for spaying/neutering pets?

Alternatively, I wonder why she didn't limit herself to one cat and keep it indoors?

funny the guy that got caught riding on the train with a child ticket and then spit on the train conductor when confronted got 6 months jail....

@karex

For some reason we tend to believe that mentally ill people are not responsible for what they do and they should not be confined in jail. If someone is mentally ill, he or she should be both subject to the fine for normal people and also be treated for his or her problem. In the case of murder a short treatment followed by verdict for a murder. In cases like this, whatever the fine plus the treatment.

Re 14, good point.... I found that male cats cost around 700 SEK and females 1 100 SEK to kastrera. If you google "katthjälp", there seems to be several organizations that help rescue and find homes for strays.

There is absolutely no excuse for this outrage.

She is a cruel person. She had the money to drink alcoholic beverages, but none to show compassion for helpless kittens who died horrilble deaths which she made happen again and again. She had several other options but instead she chose to cruely kill.

Not long ago, a Swedish farmer allowed his horses to exist in abysmal conditions, with hooves so badly grown that the wonder was that they could stand. Those poor horses were enamaciated and near death. They suffered for long weeks and months, yet no one knew about their horrible fate.

There is a real problem with the laws in Sweden when the people who commit these cruel outrages against animals are not given long term sentences of community service--under strict supervison--to tend to cleaning and mucking barns and kennels as a punishment for their cruelty.

I agree with you, mentally ill people need treatment. The problem is that the prevailing mindest here seems to be that "normal" people would never commit crimes. If one does commit a crime they are automatically judged to be mentally ill and therefore escape punishment. This was the point that I was trying to make when I mentioned "the real mentally ill end up not receiving the treatment they need", this is because their vacancy in hospitals are taken up by criminals who should be in jail instead, and used the mentally ill excuse to get out of prison. It's easy, all they have to do is say they don't remember what happened in most cases and an automatic mentally ill verdict is given.

If having a rifle you can always shoot the pet yourself. Quick and painless (hopefully). And inexpensive. I doubt however a woman like that would be granted a license for any kind of weapon.

In Sweden people are showing old dogs more mercy than old humans. An old dog beyond saving? Shoot it and be done with it. An old human beyond saving? Just let him lie there... keep him alive so the unfathomable suffering continues for as long as possible... :P

I had an Uncle with ferral cats on the farm that he would have to kull when the problem got to great. He said the first 2 are hard to kill, it gets easier after that.

Poor people can get their pets spayed and neutered at a very low cost or even for free at several spay/neuter events. This woman was just to evil and lazy to do it!
