Surfer lands in Sweden after Ryanair mix-up

A professional surfer from the UK who thought he was on a flight to France was given a surprise when he realized he had somehow boarded the wrong flight, and was halfway to southern Sweden.

The surfer, 19-year-old Toby Donachie from Cornwall, was meant to be heading to sunny Biarritz in southern France for a training camp.

However, after heading to the wrong gate and after staff failed to notice his incorrect ticket on two occasions, the man ended up on a flight that was instead bound for Malmö.

But the surfer didn’t make the connection himself until well into the journey.

“When they said that we were flying over Denmark, I understood that we were going the wrong way,” he told the Expressen newspaper.

Upon arrival in Sweden, the situation was promptly rectified, and the budget airline sent Donachie back to London, provided him with a free night in a hotel, and then redirected him onwards to Biarritz.

The 19-year-old surfer remained relaxed about the mix-up, telling the paper that he wasn’t disappointed to have landed in Sweden at all.

“I thought it was fun, I was laughing - it was an adventure,” he told the paper, adding that he wasn’t moved to stay though, as “the beaches are better in Biarritz.”

Meanwhile, security issues have been raised as to how someone could fly with the wrong ticket.

According to Donachie, as a child was hiding during the preflight headcount, the air stewards didn’t notice one extra passenger.

Regardless, the airline has launched an investigation into the incident

Typical Ryanair, couldn't organise a pi**up in a brewery...

I'm actually surprised that Ryanair actually sent him to his destination! I was expecting them to say this is not their problem!
08:56 June 29, 2012 by karex
#3, I was surprised too! However, I suspect thath they probably would have said that it was not their problem had this incident not turned into a news article and gotten media attention - taking their normal reaction to things would have made bad publicity for them and I think they have enough of that lately to deal with.
09:27 June 29, 2012 by occassional
In typical Ryanair style maybe the destination was advertised as being Biarritz, Malmo . You know, alongside Barcelona Shannon and Oslo Gateshead.

hahaha :D imagine surfing in the cold waters hahahaha

would have been funny, if he had been sitting with a girl talking to her. and then she would have said "so are you going to stockholm". "woa.. no no..not sweden of course".

I would have thought that the giant billboard signs BIARITTZ and GOTHENBURG would have been clear enough.

And he is in no way responsible for going to the wrong gate?

At last.

> Upon arrival in Sweden, the situation was promptly rectified, and the budget airline sent Donachie back to London, provided him with a free night in a hotel, and then redirected him onwards to Biarritz.

This is the TRUTH about Ryan Air. They suffer from so many rumours of people saying bad things. People refuse to believe that you can actually fly for as cheap as £10-20. Sure you have to pay more if you want checked in baggage etc, but these are optional. On other airlines you are always forced to pay even if you don't want to check in bags.

I once had a suitcase that broke on a Ryan Air flight. The handle came off. They agreed to the value of the bag 450 SEK but refused to send me credit for that amount. Instead they sent me double (900 SEK) in Ryan Air vouchers towards my next flight.

As for the naming of airports. I totally understand why Skavsta is Called Stockholm South and Västerås is called Stockholm West. It implies that there a direct bus service to Stockholm to and from every flight. This way if you want to go to Stockholm you are not confused by having to discover for yourself if you should fly to Säve, Karlstad or Skavsta.

I think Ryan Air deserves more praise, hope this story goes viral.

@Garry:

I travel in Ryan air quite frequently, and not even once did I had trouble with them.

Afterall, the airlines are quite busy, which shows people are using it. But then again :) sometimes people complain just for fun, yes wrong it is but we do :)

Ryanair dont deserve the bad press. Sure their customer service stinks, and you are treated like cattle, but as it usually costs more to park the car than the return flight, suffer it. They have done us all a favour by shaking up the market, pre Ryanair we were paying silly numbers for flights. They must be getting something right as they seem to be one of the only airlines to be able to make a profit.

No such thing as hidden extras, its all there before you click purchase.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome on board this Ryanair flight.

In the event of a sudden drop in cabin pressure, masks will drop down from above you. Please insert 5 Euros for oxygen.

A little too much puff puff pass for that surfer.

Nice to see the moaners and whiners about Ryanair aren't out in force on this story yet! Sure their customer service does leave something to be desired, and navigating their website is a bit of a pain - but you'd have to be somewhat retarded not to know how much you're paying before you click to pay! Basically, you get what you pay for, and from what I read and hear you might even, by comparison with some other airlines, get better than you pay for! That's my experience for what it's worth, anyway...
