Abba replaced by Loreen at Stockholm airport

Loreen, the winner of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, will soon have her portrait hung in Stockholm's Arlanda airport to fill a gap left when a picture of Abba was taken down after Benny Andersson demanded it be removed.

The face of Loreen, Sweden's latest Eurovision champion, is in the news again.

This time, however, it's in the form of her very own portrait, which is set to replace a picture of Swedish super group and former Eurovision Song Contest winners Abba that had previously hung in Stockholm's main airport.

“It is a fantastic honour, and it feels incredible to be part of the Stockholm Hall of Fame along with these other Swedish figures,” Loreen said in a statement.

The picture of Abba that had been included in Arlanda's "Hall of Fame" was removed earlier this year after Andersson protested against controversial renovations of the Slussen interchange in central Stockholm.

Andersson hoped to use his portrait as leverage to block the planned renovations, and when plans proceeded, the singer held true to his word.

“I have no desire to be a billboard for a city that makes unreasonable decisions like this,” said Andersson to Dagens Nyheter (DN) at the time.

“I am not available for use anymore."

Loreen's portrait will hang alongside the portraits of other Swedish icons, past and present, including film director Ingmar Bergman and King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The portraits have their home in Stockholm’s two international terminals, and Loreen’s will be placed in Terminal 5.

Over 19 million people land in Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport every year, according to Swedavia, guaranteeing even more exposure for the Swedish pop-star.

Everyone coming to Sweden will wonder who the hell that is.

Does this mean that I may get into the "hall of fame" if I sing a non-original and well worn 1990's dance tune?
20:04 June 29, 2012 by dizzymoe33
Too bad Benny Andersson threw such a fit over it all. There are so many tourists that look forwarded to landing at Arlanda and having their picture taken by the ABBA poster. Oh well.....

Pretty telling, don't you think?
21:51 June 29, 2012 by Steggles
She will never be as big as Abba!

If Benny wants out then Bjorn, Agnetha & Frida should remain with individual portraits.

HMM renovations help to make structures strong, why the hell people were against of renovations. Yes fine, some structure may have historical value, but still , no one complains when they use the modern technology or the benefits of vehicles or rising sky scrappers, but they will complain that dont change the historical buildings! sheeesh

Does this mean that Loreen is for the new Slussen? Are all artists displayed politically 'loyal' to that specific configuration of motorways etc?
09:42 June 30, 2012 by jostein
How symbolic :D

Simply wrong.

It is wrong to replace abba with Loreen. We are not in reality music. She needs some years to comvince us.

However, she can be bigger than Abba if she is serious. She drew the record crowd in small town borås consert this week. The first question i get asked outside of sweden, once they know I i am from sweden is how is Looren. She popular all over the worldd now. She can be greater and she should be greater.

Andersson is too low to be catching a fit over Loreen. A success without a successor is a failure. We supposed to have many Abbas by now.

prince T She will never be as famous as ABBA. I travel to the UK a lot and not one of my friends family or people I have met have asked about her. She is just an average singer.
14:19 June 30, 2012 by Atlas
Looking at her pics, one has to wonder if she has a huge forehead and tries to hide it behind her hair...just saying something off the topic :D

cheap and nasty passed off as something special. sums up sweden perfectly.

sweden reminds me of some b grade reality show that comes on at midnight so appropriate she should be revered in your society.

how embarrassing.

I agree that she is an average singer for now. @mb65 Your uk friends seems be out of touch with music. 372 point, it is a record in the history of eurovision. r. If she keeps up the tempo, she will not be average in 5 years.

Records are meant to be broken. I cannot hold brief for her but she has all the potentials to beat Abba record. Go girl

@ prince T

Actually, the record for the most points in Eurovision history is still Alexander Rybak's "Fairytale" which won for Norway in 2009 with 387 points.

Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, just saying.

i can see the usual racists are out in full throttle just because Loreen is not caucaasian or pale pink colored...yuck racism is a mental sickness!
12:14 July 2, 2012 by robban70226
who cares!!!
13:57 July 2, 2012 by towns
@ Sheba

You have something against pink and pale people, are you racist?

On a more serious note, what comments on here strike you as racist? I see maybe 2 out of 18. Hardly sounds like "full throttle" to me. Perhaps you should rethink your knee-jerk reflex racist accusation complex?

I love it. I think Loreen is awesome and ABBA is ancient! Winning Eurovision has to count for something and you gotta give her credit for her principles. She's aces with me and I for one will be sooooo happy to see her picture when coming home! Plus I think it's great for visitors to get an immediate clue to who's really popular here. Grats to the airport for making the decision and tusen tack Loreen for accepting so gracefully.
