Ecuador still mulling Assange plea: Correa

Published: 1 Jul 12 09:29 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/41756/20120701/

President Rafael Correa said Saturday that Ecuador is still considering whether to grant political asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is wanted in Sweden in connection with sexual assault allegations.

"We are analyzing the case with full responsibility and, as we have said a thousand times, we have no deadline to make a decision," Correa said.

"That decision will be absolutely sovereign and ... (show) respect for human rights," he added.

Assange remained holed up at Ecuador's embassy in London on Saturday, defying a British police order to turn himself in for extradition to Sweden where he is sought on sex crime allegations.

The 40-year-old Australian insists those allegations are part of a politically-motivated effort to get him extradited to the United States, where he fears he could be put on trial for espionage or other crimes.

WikiLeaks enraged Washington by publishing a flood of secret information about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as more than 250,000 confidential US diplomatic cables.

Assange's supporters paint him as a whistle-blowing hero but his critics denounce him as a traitorous anarchist. He sought refuge at Ecuador's embassy in London on June 19th.

Correa has often been at odds with Washington and offered Assange asylum in 2010.

Is TL trying to lead its readers with it continuous limp articles with no substance?

Even if you look at the photos TL uses for such articles they decide to use ones which portray those in the story in a negative light (see photo above)... I wonder if the article will now be changed, or reduced immediately to be hidden on the front page.

"we have no deadline to make a decision," Correa said.

Oh, yeah? Last time he said he would decide in three days.

Nothing says a good story, like ....

reporting on "still no news".
13:58 July 1, 2012 by foxpur
It is called follow-up reporting and is legitimate news.

Just because you personally don't care doesn't make it less valid information.

The "News" side is like a standoff with police... it could go on for days... somewhat like a seige. That as of today the siege is still not broken,

It's not a BIG news, but it IS news.

This guy is a common criminal, get real, let the system work. Assange is a Rapist,Terrorist, time to move on.....
15:25 July 1, 2012 by AdamVikingen
@GLO

IN what way is he a terrorist? You dont seem to understand what terrorism actually is. Its the mean of spreading messages trough the work of pure terror, and Assange is the owner of a webpage that simply posts news and proof abut what nations are doing "under the table" that goes against internation law (In others words "Government terrorism", and since the US in a terrorist nation (since they spread terror where ever they go) they are the top priority on the page.

And when ot comes to the rape, i am from Sweden and i have been following this case, and the things is, there is absolutely no proof or rape, at all, the "Girls" that is said to have report them, there is not even proof that they exist! Which is why most people ( Me included ) think its just a scam to get him to Sweden, since Sweden has a deal with the US to exchange prisoners, meaning that when Assange gets here, he will also later be sent to the US, and since the US dose everything to shut down anyone speaking against their imperialistic and terror-working ways (Like Assange is doing) he will most likely be sent to "Guantanamo Bay" and from there no one besides the US gov; will now whats going on with him and no one will even know if he is alive.

"And when ot comes to the rape, i am from Sweden and i have been following this case, and the things is, there is absolutely no proof or rape, at all, the "Girls" that is said to have report them, there is not even proof that they exist!"

Link,

"Bottom line: Rape is rape

Sexual assault charges must be taken seriously even if accused is a liberal darling"

Excerpt,

"One woman says Assange forced her to remove her clothing, ripped her necklace, forced her legs apart and was "violent." She thought he tore his condom on purpose, and refused to get an AIDS test when she demanded one.

The second woman said she woke up in the morning to find Assange having unprotected sex with her. She, too, demanded an AIDS test. ............. Assange refused

The charges against Julian Assange are not that he was a bad date, or that he didn't call women back. It's that he is a rapist. If those charges are false, you'd think he'd want to get back to Sweden as soon as possible to clear things up, not fight extradition there like his life depended on it."

"not fight extradition there like his life depended on it."

It might well be that his life indeed depends upon it.

he is a comman criminal, who thinks he is above the law. Time to grow up and face your accusers. All his actions have had conequences, which hiding behind his computer screen and getting others to do his dirty work, shouldn't protect him from. Time to face up to them and be the big man he thinks he is.

It is funny and at the same time grotesque when common folks think that exposing truth makes one a terrorist.

A rapist, huh? Did you know the woman who Assange allegedly raped went to buy him breakfast when Assange was sleeping in her bed?

"It's Ecuador or Guantanamo" by Pepe Escobar "

You're talking about his freedom, not death, his life.

If, IF, he ends up in the U.S. to face charges, the chances of him being sent to Guantanamo, are slim to none.

Bradley Manning, U.S. Military, is currently facing charges for wickileaks releases, if found guilty he could be executed, the prosecution has made clear they will NOT seek the death penalty, however he could face life ion jail.

That life sentence, is also doubtful.

There is NO president, that remotely suggests that his time will be served at Guantanamo.

What a clown! Too afraid of defending himself against two Swedish chics..! Why Assange IS innocent, isn't he?? ;)
16:53 July 4, 2012 by Pelican3915
Sweden send procecutors to Poland to "interview" two suspected murders - but refused to go to the UK as requested by Assange - why? Sweden prone to subject people to Rendition as recently admitted to two persons recently who were payed compensation by the Swedish Gov

Assange initially not required - then later after some political string pulling is pursued quite wrongly due to trumped up & exagerated rubbish

Sweden nothing short of a Disgrace in terms of their Legal / Government and kow towing to the US!

This 57-page document lays out all of the lies, inconsistencies and violations of Swedish law by the Swedish police and prosecutors.

http://www.nnn.se/nordic/assange/suspicious.pdf

No one who reads that can believe that there is anything at all to the case against Assange.

The statements the women made are thoroughly undermined by their actions after the alleged assaults. Nor do the accusations even reflect the statements that the women actually made.

But there are apparently quite a few friends of Miss Ardin and/or the prosecution lying in their comments on this blog.
