Assange rape allegations 'hilarious': minister

Published: 5 Jul 12 07:44 CET | Print version

Ecuador's foreign minister has said that rape and sexual assault cases lodged in Sweden against Julian Assange are laughable, but no ruling has yet been made on the WikiLeaks founder's asylum application.

"Personally, (I think) this is hilarious," Ecuadoran chief diplomat Ricardo Patino told reporters, explaining that Assange "is charged because his condom broke."

Assange is currently at the Ecuadoran embassy in London, seeking political asylum in the Latin American country.

Ecuadoran officials are examining the allegations of sexual misconduct in their review of Assange's application.

Patino said that one of the alleged victims filed a complaint, because she "realized that on certain nights, the condom broke."

Assange, an Australian, maintains he only had consensual sexual relations with the alleged victims.

WikiLeaks and Assange enraged the United States by publishing a flood of secret information about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The website founder fears that if extradited to Sweden, he will be subsequently re-extradited to the United States to stand trial for espionage, on account of the 250,000 US diplomatic cables that were published.

British and Swedish authorities are awaiting Ecuador's decision regarding Assange's asylum application, but Patino reported that investigations into the claims of the two alleged victims are ongoing.

Ecuador's leftist President Rafael Correa, who has often been at odds with Washington and offered Assange asylum in 2010, has said that the South American country will take its time considering the application.

I detest sexual predators and have no mercy for them, however from the very beginning it was obvious something was not right about thses allegations. I have read every scrap I could find and have to say the entire situation is a hoax. I must confess that I believe Assange's assertions thatit was all done at the behest of American intelligence services and it is quiet possible a couple other intelligence services from other countries arein on the conspiracy. The Swedes have a documented history of turning individuals over to the USA ( ask the two Egyptians who just got out of prison in Egyptian after 9 years. ). The Swedes do what the Americans want, so do the British, truthfully every single Europeancountry with the possible exception of France will dance to whatever song the Americans decide to play.

I am watching to see how Ecuador will manage to get assange out of UK. Ecuador is just using this case to get attention. Assage and Ecuador are fighting a losing battle. Unless he going to ne living in the embassy forever.

It is laughable from the start to the end. The investigators could have simply flown to the UK to interrogate Assange. He has not been charged!

It quite clearly shows that the Swedish authorities are afraid of the economic muscle the US has over Sweden's national interests. Sad that such a country like many others won't stand up to the bullying. But then Sweden did allow the Nazis to use their rail system to get to Norway during WWII. We need a 'Hugh Grant' speech that he did ib the film 'Love Actually'. We need real politicians....not puppets.

Make no mistake about it, the US authorities are very angry with Assange where some politicians have stated that he should be killed and/or treated as a terrorist.most of the Governments would have known the info that Assange released before.....so no loss to US credibilty.....but what it does is expose the real US and that is damaging as people do not and will not believe anything they say.

The US people are decent, hardworking people who are run by a legitimate Mafia. Mitt Romney is a prime example....the proud American....blah..blah...blah who uses offshore companies to minimise his US tax.....maybe legal...but morally wrong.....it's not as if he needs the money.....but the US do with their massive national debt.

For Sure It is laughable from the start to the end the way Swedish ''law'' handled this from the beginning, shame of you Seden, politics going wrong here?

Great international exposure of the reality in the Swedish system
09:43 July 5, 2012 by engagebrain
I agree with Mib

Why did the Swedish prosecutor not travel to the UK to interview Assange and then decide whether extradition was appropriate.

By now the legal bills for processing the extraditon vastly exceed the price of a return flight - a great deal of public money has been wasted and someone should explain why.

What kind of comment can you expect from a Latino macho? Only a stupid one.

Equador, please take Assange and never let him go. Stop babbling, act.
14:11 July 5, 2012 by Nilspet
What if Ecuador buys up the whole building and builds a helipad on the roof. As soon as that is done then they can order a helicopter to come and fetch Mr. A? And if diplomats fly with him it would not be appropriate to shoot it down, right?

Just an imagination.
14:16 July 5, 2012 by Reason abd Realism
@ Prince T

It is not true that Assange would have to remain in the Embassy forever. With diplomatic immunity, he could walk to the airport and catch the next flight to Ecuador.

In 1986 someone in the Lybian embassy in London shot and killed a British police officer who was standing outside. Because of diplomatic immunity, the British were not allowed to stop or arrest any of the Embassy staff when they left the.Embassy to fly back to Lybia.

The delay in processing Assange's request is not to assess the sex crime information (which they say is laughable); rather it is to wait for all the international reaction, and for all the diplomatic action behind closed doors, and phone calls with the USA, to fully calculate the political and economic impact to Ecuador (if any) if they accept Assange as a political refugee.

As a legal note from the Swedish system...

They can't legally question him outside of Sweden, information gained from the questioning would not be considered properly attained and could be called into debate that it was lawfully attaioned. So.. has to go to Sweden.

This is related to the case as a whole, Assange walked in and offered on his demand to answer question, however the way the legal system is required to run in Sweden the people involved have to be there for the questioning. Since they couldn't be he walked out and left the country. By the time they had the system caught up to his questions and told him he had to come back and get questioned legally (which wouldn't have been legal when he was there the first time) he refused, and that started all this mess.

As soon as Assange had a "out" by claiming he was illegally questioned he was fine with having said he tried. When they didn't give him that "out" and made it actually legal.. he ran to UK.

Note that the USA wasn't mentioned anywhere in this, this was a completely Swedish legal system event. The process is very Swedish and actually has little to do with the actual case itself. By making into a much larger case Assange has only added crimes to a list, so yes, it then becomes logical he get's locked up for a proved case history of him fleeing when he is brought to Sweden.

Time to cut off all trade to Ecuador, the rule of Law is the only thing that makes us different from animals. Assange is a Rapist and a Terrorist, time to face the music boy!!!!
19:13 July 5, 2012 by procrustes
Poor writing is committing gross injustice. When one is labeled "rapist" the image is the beast in the park brutally ravaging a total stranger. This is not even close to what occurred between Mr. Assange and the two groupies that hit on him. I'm not sure what the proper term should be, but clearly rape isn't it--not even in same linguistic universe.

People pushing the "rape" label are probably motivated by hate and their personal anger issues.

A new terminology is needed because of injustice to the labeled and trivialization of the horror experienced by rape victims. In the Assange case, several days (weeks?) were required for the groupies to conclude that they had been raped.

This entire affair stinks.

@GLO

Do you have the wit to defend the rule of law without actually ...... breaking the law yourself?

Defamation is a serious crime in Sweden.
21:23 July 5, 2012 by foxpur
GLO: Trade with Ecuador is already stopped from previous flaunting of international law. So this wouldn't really change anything.
22:17 July 5, 2012 by Garry Jones
Well it would appear that the Ecuadorians have not read the police interview transcripts. It clearly says he is suspected of breaking a condom in one case which is not the same as "it broke".

The source that the Ecuadorians have not seen.......

Quotes

Girl 1 known as AA but identified in link so I edited her name to AA in this.

"Shortly thereafter, Assange ejaculated inside her and then withdrew. When Assange removed the condom from his penis, AA saw that it did not contain any semen. When AA began to move her body she noticed that something "ran" out of her vagina. AA understood rather quickly that it must be Assange's semen. She pointed this out to Assange, but he denied it and replied that it was only her own wetness. AA is convinced that when he withdrew from her the first time, Assange deliberately broke the condom at its tip and then continued copulating to ejaculation. To my question Anna replies she did not look closely at the condom in order to see if it was broken in the way that she suspected; but she believes that she still has the condom at home and will check to see."

Girl 2 (Known as SW, identified in link)

They sat on the bed and talked, and he took off her clothes again. They had sex again and she suddenly discovered that he had placed the condom only over the head of his penis; but she let it be. They dozed off and she awoke and felt him penetrating her. She immediately asked, "Are you wearing anything?", to which he replied, "You". She said to him: "You better don't have HIV", and he replied, "Of course not". "She felt that it was too late. He was already inside her and she let him continue. She didn't have the energy to tell him one more time. She had gone on and on about condoms all night long. She has never had unprotected sex before. He said he wanted to come inside her; he did not say when he did, but he did it. A lot ran out of her afterward. When she talked with her friends afterwards, she understood that she was the victim of a crime. She went to Danderyd Hospital, and from there to Söder Hospital where she was examined and where samples with a so-called rape kit were also taken.

Julian Assange is vehemently anti-American and therefore completely above the criminal laws of the European Union and those of Sweden. How does Sweden dare to apply laws that mortals must obey to a GOD of the leftists?
23:23 July 5, 2012 by orwellian
@foxpur

"They can't legally question him outside of Sweden"

That is simply untrue. Swedish police routinely question suspects abroad. Last week Swedish police traveled to Belgrad to do just that.

"he ran to UK"

He did no such thing. He repeatedly tried to get in touch with Marianne Ny but she refused to meet with him. Later she refused to postpone the interview when he was busy releasing Cablegate. Instead she issued the arrest warrant.

By looking at the handling of this case it's obvious what is going on.

Rape by "not having the energy to tell him do use a condom, and thus letting him continue".

Impressive legal system.

Assange's Swedish attorney was shocked upon learning of the report.

"With this now coming to light, I think you can question the entire preliminary investigation," he told the newspaper.

He added that the lead interrogator should have informed her superiors that she knew one of the accusers.

The lead police interrogator in the case of suspected rape involving Julian Assange has personal and political connections to one of the two WikiLeaks founder's accusers.

Expressen pointed out that the officer in question must have realised as soon as the two women came in to provide statements last August that one of them was her acquaintance and co-party member, but she had not removed herself from the case and had instead gone on to interrogate the second alleged victim.

If this is true as reported by The Local, for sure Mr. Assange has the right to request an entire new investigation of his case.

Poor UNSUSPECTING ASSANGE! Here for a conference, a little good time and he is now being faced with the scum side of feminism! Very soon, Swedish women will be taking men to court for not looking at them on the streets, bars and in nightclub! The most dangerous 'thing in Sweden' is a drunk woman. Unfortunately most of them drink HEAVILY!

The well justified struggle for gender equality in Sweden has been transformed into a state feminism that turns men into perpetrators scares them away from women! Feminism has to do with strengthening women's self-esteem, not with turning them into victims to be looked after by the state…. And when its all foreign women being married by Swedish men, they Swedish women are complaining! What did they expect.

"Mutual Legal Assistance is the provision of assistance on a formal legal basis, usually in the gathering and transmission of evidence, by an authority of one country to an authority in another, in response to a request for assistance."

Mutual Legal Assistance is another example of people not understand the nature of some laws. As Assange hasn't been accused of sexual assault in UK the MLA can not be used.

It has been a common argument that the Swedish authorities should go to UK to interview Assange. With the introduction of MLA by expatjourno it is clear that it is impractical for Assange to be interviewed outside of Sweden.

There is skepticism about the authenticity of the information presented about the DNA test. It is hard to believe that no DNA was not found on the condom.

To expatjourno and others; there is no reason to read propaganda in support of Assange, for that is all it is. Assange should stop this facade and go to Sweden to defend himself. The only way that the truth can and will come out is in a court of law, and that court would be in Sweden.
10:33 July 9, 2012 by Fred Johnsson
This is seriously rediculous! So the condom broke! Did she get pregnant? NO!

Send Assange home so he can continue expose the corruptions of the world!
23:31 July 9, 2012 by expatjourno
Tiny Red Ant: You are lying, plain and simple. The is no legal bar to questioning Assange in the UK. Period. End of story.

Anyone who wishes to determine who is telling the truth can simply google.

A more interesting question is why you insist on lying about this case. I suspect you are connected to one of the parties.
