Assange asylum 'may spark US smear tactics'

Ecuador's ambassador to Washington expressed concerns Monday that granting political asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange could be used to discredit Quito in the United States.

"Giving asylum to Assange would be used as ammunition to attack the country," Ambassador Nathalie Cely said in a radio interview.

Since last month, Assange has been holed up in Quito's embassy in London, seeking political asylum to avoid being extradited to Sweden on rape charges.

Quito has said it is examining the request, and examining the allegations of sexual misconduct against the Australian national as part of the process.

He maintains he only had consensual sexual relations with the alleged victims.

Cely said salvos already have been launched by pressure groups seeking to "disparage her country in the eyes of US business leaders and policymakers."

In the interview with Radio Majestad, the envoy said that recriminations against Quito for sheltering Assange "already have begun."

Cely said her government remained "ready as ever to defend our position and our decisions," without providing any clues as to when Ecuador might make its decision on Assange's fate.

WikiLeaks and Assange enraged the United States by publishing a flood of secret information about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The website founder fears that if extradited to Sweden, he will be subsequently re-extradited to the United States to stand trial for espionage, on account of the 250,000 US diplomatic cables that were published.

Ecuador's leftist President Rafael Correa -- who has often been at odds with Washington and offered Assange asylum in 2010 -- has said that the South American country will take its time considering the application.

Ecuador is just testing waters. Granting assylum for assage will not work and they know it. No military might and will power. I am watching and waiting to see how they will get him out of UK.

The American empire is crumbling. Ecuador knows this. My money is on asylum.

The continual crumbling of reality. Giving Assange asylum will discredit Ecuador all on its own. America could careless if Assange goes to Ecuador for asylum, but they will lose faith in the eyes of UK and Sweden. However, giving Assange asylum will not prevent him from getting arrested.

How is he even going to get to Ecuador just leaving the Embassy he will get arrested because he broke UK law.Ecuador can not afford what it will lose from taking him in.

What about turning him to Russia or China?

"How is he even going to get to Ecuador just leaving the Embassy he will get arrested because he broke UK law."

As long as he is escorted by Ecuador officials who have diplomatic immunity they cannot touch him.

I don't know if the US gives a rat's ass about Assange. I hope they do. Nevertheless, the "crumbling American empire" has given Ecuador $300 million in direct aid over the last 10 years. I suspect they may consider the prospects for derailing the gravy train when considering asylum.

Ms. Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister of Australia (hence an Australian national) who Mr. Julian Assange (a journalist) has called upon, as an Australian national, for protection from his Prime Minister, his nation and his people.

Ms. Julia Gillard, every human life is sacred. Every human being must have the liberty to live a life free of fear of being killed.

Julian Assange (a journalist) was awarded Sydney peace medal in 2011.

''In the estimation of the Sydney Peace Foundation, Julian Assange (a journalist) stands alongside the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela''.

According to the Sydney Peace Foundation, Julian Assange (a journalist) has shown "exceptional courage and initiative in pursuit of human rights"."Peace from our point of view is really about justice, fairness and the attainment of human rights," stated Professor Rees of the Sydney Peace Foundation.

"Julian Assange has championed people's right to know and has challenged the centuries-old tradition that governments are entitled to keep the public in a state of ignorance."

''By leaking thousands of US diplomatic cables, Mr Julian Assange (a journalist) had made a historically significant contribution to the operation of democracy, the Sydney Peace Foundation's executive decided''.

Ms. Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia, we call on you to guarantee Julian Assange's safety and to protect his life.

Julian Assange's circumstances as he has stated, and many around the world echo, are ''a serious political matter … [that] the Australian government should treat with the seriousness it requires''.

Julia Gillard act as a Prime Minister of the Australian nation and protect all Australians.

"Peace from our point of view is really about justice, fairness and the attainment of human rights," stated Professor Rees of the Sydney Peace Foundation."

Agreed, but Assange's bias subjective targeting was neither just, fair, or done in the interest of human rights.

It was done in the interest of his obsessive personal agenda that was directed against certain countries only, and put himself in the position of having the final say, (King Julian), and a veto over the group consensus.

If his efforts were put into releasing a balanced distribution of diplomatic cables from all corners, with final decisions based on the group consensus only, then he would have at least SOME credibility.

And do precisely what?

I don't know if it is feasible but possibly Ecuador could give him diplomatic status.

Back on topic, I'd be greatly surprised if Ecuador or, anyone for that matter, cared one iota what the USA thinks.

The top US 1 % and Bilderbergs need to show the world that no one can escape their might. Might makes right, that is the only language they understand. The Kennedys tried to fight them and got a death sentence. But even if they kill Assange they cannot kill internet. They cannot control information as easily as they did before. That will never change, with or without Assange. There will be other people like Bradley Manning and Julian Assange. There are people who simply are not so afraid as to put fear above ideals, like the rest. They are exceptions in percentage, but in absolute numbers they are many. There have always been people like this and there will always be.
17:55 July 13, 2012 by Ranger
If Ecuador was really concerned about what other people think about their country then they would not be joining the DARK SIDE and hosting Ahmadinejad's recent visit to Quito.
21:37 July 13, 2012 by Archie1954
The US has no business involving itself in this matter. it is between Ecuador and the UK with Sweden looking on. How many times have we heard that the US has not requested Assange nor have they filed charges so what is their problem? It's Australia that should have supported him but that country is nothing but another American shill. Thank goodness for nations like Ecuador who are willing to look at the merits of the case and come down on the side of justice unlike Sweden and its politicized judicial systtem and the UK which is simply an American lapdog.
01:43 July 14, 2012 by Ranger
Archie, The swedish judicial system is not a politicized system but it's a judicial system based on stupidy and incompetency. You should kiss your lucky charms that the US is a moralistic society otherwise you and all the corrupt judges in Sweden would be doing the goose step polka and singing the seig heil anthem.

@Carbarrister

"the "crumbling American empire" has given Ecuador $300 million in direct aid over the last 10 years"

Most of that money has not bennefited Ecuadorians, it has gone to pro-American NGOs designed to destabilize the country.

Besides Ecuador does not need your charity, the less the American government interferes in this country the better off we'll be.
