Prison for man who cut off and ate wife's lip

A 52-year-old academic at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute who cut off his wife's lip and ate it to prevent her from kissing another man was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in prison for the attack.

The conviction for aggravated assault was a disappointment to prosecutor Ingela Hessius, who had argued the man be jailed for eight years because of the heinous nature of the crime.

"We wanted eight years, but the important thing is that he has been convicted," she told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The 52-year-old man, who is a respected researcher at the Karolinska Institute north of Stockholm, attacked his wife in May at their home south of the city.

In a fit of jealousy over suspicions that his 32-year-old wife was seeing another man, the academic straddled his wife while she was sleeping and sliced off her lower lip with a scalpel.

"I'm going to see to it that you can never kiss again. I'll get four years in prison, you'll get a life sentence," he told his wife as he cut off her lip, according to statements given to police.

The 32-year-old woman met the professor in Iran, where he helped her come to Sweden to study at Karolinska.

It was during this time that the man fell in love with the woman, leaving his then-wife to marry her.

However, the 32-year-old asked for a divorce only six months into the marriage, a request which eventually led to the attack whereby he cut off his wife's lip and then proceeded to swallow it to prevent it from being reattached by surgeons.

"I thought I was going to die," the woman recalled thinking when she awoke to find her husband straddling her brandishing a scalpel, according to Aftonbladet.

During the trial, the 52-year-old expressed little remorse for his actions.

"Every time she stands in front of a mirror and puts on lipstick she will have to think about what she's done to me," he told the court, according to the Expressen newspaper.

The court ruled the man be convicted for extremely aggravated assault, a designation for assaults that leave victims with permanent injuries.

"The act of swallowing and throwing away the lip can also be seen as revealing the intent to have the injuries be permanent," the court wrote in its decision.

In addition to being sentenced to prison, the 52-year-old has also been ordered to pay the woman 96,900 kronor ($13,800) in compensation.

Prosecutor Hessius said he is both satisfied and dissatisfied with the ruling, but hasn't decided whether or not to appeal the verdict.

The full story is never been told,I strongly condemn this cannibalistic attitude, but this should also serve as a warning to women or men who marry all in the name of getting a better life in Europe, and many are in Sweden being treated like animals by their spouse, what a sad story.

Prison and no deportation? Send him back to the dump he came from!!! Why should OUR taxes subsidize his stay in a luxury 4 star hotel? (prison in sweden)???
15:26 July 10, 2012 by Polarbear
Isn't he Swedish? If he left his wife and is a top researcher in Sweden then he is probably a Swedish man who has tried to buy a new wife.

Sounds like practice of the 'religion of peace'. Welcome to Western Europe.

He is not Swedish, if you look up the police report on the internet it can clearly be seen that he is some guy from Tehran, iran. Surprised, not. I think the term "top researcher" is probably exaggerated also.

@polarbear and jonathanjames61

No, the guy is from Iran.

When it comes to being swedish, I think there's atleast 3 aspects. First there's the "controversial" ethnic perspective (when foreign people talks about swedish women, they don't tend to mean someone that looks like Beyonce). Then there's a cultural and value perspective where one considers oneself swedish and part of the swedish society. This aspect can also be divided into more parts, but no point going into more details about that now. And lastly there's citizenship (and sometimes even illegal immigrants) where one don't have to feel swedish, don't need to know the language etc.

Even if someone just belongs to the last category, massmedia in sweden will only refer to them as swedish, based solely on citizenship. This article is one example, but it's very common in general.

Btw the UK press gives a very different view on it, they say he was not actually employed at Karolinska,

Interesting. No prizes for which country's media is covering the truth up. One thing i really admire about the UK

So when he dumps his previous wife that's OK, but when his new wife wants a divorce it becomes a matter of 'honour' and he hacks off her lower lip. No evidence that his wife was having an affair was provided.

I wonder how his next wife will manage.

#3,

You are simply a moron.

Let's just cut the bullsh*t, and throw out the legal system. I mean, why bother??There's next-to-zero punishment/rehab for violent monsters, so why waste taxes on a pretend legal system?? Why pay the educational fees and salaries of lawyers and judges who don't do sh*t for victims?
01:13 July 11, 2012 by Svensksmith
Maybe he can find a new wife in prison.
08:19 July 11, 2012 by bourgeoisieboheme
I too am disturbed there is no mention of deportation. In 5 years, when he is free, he will be back on the street in Sthlm, change his name I would assume (I would), and prey on more young women. I don't want my female friends in the same city as this maniac, send him home.

It is impossible to deport Swedish citizens .. That is the law ...

It is relatively easy for Swedish citizens to bring foreigners into this country.

Btw prosecutor Ingela Hessius is most likely a woman not a man... The last sentence of the article suggests otherwise:

"

Prosecutor Hessius said he is both satisfied and dissatisfied with the ruling, but hasn't decided whether or not to appeal the verdict.

"
09:57 July 12, 2012 by Swedishmyth
In Sweden, it's not "CRIME crime" unless it's done to God, i.e. government. This sentence was to be expected.

What of the victim?

Will the courts grant her a divorce?

Can she get a transplant or cosmetic surgery?

Will she help educate other women to the folly of marrying a man from a stone-age culture?
