Prime Minister Reinfeldt files for divorce

Fredrik Reinfeldt filed a formal divorce application on Wednesday at the Stockholm District Court, seeking to ending what had been a 20 year marriage with his wife Filippa.

Reinfeldt’s press secretary Roberta Alenius announced on March 7th that the pair would split, but it wasn’t until Wednesday that the pair made the official application for divorce.

However, both Mr. and Mrs. Reinfeldt remained tight lipped about the filing.

“I will not comment on Filippa Reinfeldt’s private life,” said her press secretary Gustaf Stenlund to the Expressen newspaper.

“I have no other comments than those in the press statement,” said the prime minister’s press spokesperson, Markus Friberg, to the paper.

As the Reinfeldts have been apart for six months, they must now confirm that they really do intend to separate and a ruling will follow.

However, the divorce proceedings have been a low-key affair.

During the political week of Almedalen on Gotland last week, the pair was both on the scene and Filippa was even seen cheering for the prime minister, according to Expressen.

“Fredrik provided good and clear content in what we stand for with a modern Labor party,” she told the paper at the time.

Both Reinfeldts have successful political careers.

Fredrik Reinfeldt has since 2006 headed Sweden's centre-right coalition government, which is made up from his own Moderate Party, the Centre Party, the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) and the Christian Democrats.

Filippa Reinfeldt has held the post of Stockholm county council chair since 2006.

The couple, who has three children, got married in 1992 and lived in Täby until the 2006 election.

When Fredrik Reinfeldt was made prime minister the couple moved to the official residence Sagerska Palatset in central Stockholm.

come on TL, you don't even proof read?

"The couple, who has three children", who have, not has.

"The couple, who has three children,"

This should read, " The couple, who HAVE three children,"
01:08 July 12, 2012 by 007
"the couple" is a collective noun and takes the singular verb when they are described as a unit as in "the unit/couple has three children". as individuals it takes the plural, "the individuals/couple have separate homes".

i would say, get lives (plural to indicate both of the preceding posters) but i suppose i must take some of that criticism as i have bothered to point out your failures in #knowitallism.

"Have" "has" or whatever- seriously who cares??? I can have Filippa if Reindfelt has had his fill! She is the hottest PM wifey Sweden has ever had!
08:44 July 12, 2012 by Snood
007, usually this would be right, but the "who" changes your example, it no longer is correct and has must change to have.

@ ZenMonk #5 ("Who cares??")

I'd like to think people who care about being literate and having good spelling and grammar skills would care :)

snood.sorry, the use of the relative pronoun has zero affect on the requirement of a singular or plural verb. but if i'm missing something, by all means please explain

(and if the best you can do is "the 'who' changes your example, it no longer is correct and has must change to have" HAS MUST???...you might want to just pretend you never saw this reply.

Has is the past/present tense so if they have lost one or all their children then the grammar is still clumsy but ok other wise Have 3 children sounds a lot better..then again "has had" would be better in that case!

If the article was talking about a single person (him or her...hen does not count in English) then has would be appropriate!

now he is a liability to his party

No-one seems to have noticed that it SHOULD be "The couple, which has three children, ..." or, perhaps, "the pair (implied > of people), who have three children, ..." :)

"snood.sorry, the use of the relative pronoun has zero affect on the requirement of a singular or plural verb."

As the self-appointed grammarian-in-chief, you might want to check out the meaning of affect vs. effect. (hint: it's a noun-verb thing).
