Sweden praised for 'stable' financial outlook

Ratings agency Fitch affirmed Thursday Sweden's long-term debt rating at AAA with a "stable" outlook, hailing the country's prudence and suggesting it was well placed to weather the eurozone debt crisis.

"Despite headwinds from the eurozone, Sweden's track record of sound monetary, fiscal management and high level of national savings leaves it well placed to cope with increased macroeconomic risks," Fitch said in a statement.

The ratings agency hailed "effective implementation of expenditure ceilings and prudence over government budget targets," which it said allowed Stockholm to reduce its general government debt to 38.4 percent of gross domestic product last year from a peak of 78 percent of GDP in 1993.

"Fitch expects Sweden to meet its 2012 target of a moderate 0.3 percent of GDP (public) deficit, and move into surplus over the medium term," it said, adding that it anticipated Sweden would see 1.2 percent economic growth this year and 2.0 percent in 2013.

While stressing the Scandinavian country's economy was sound, Fitch did caution that "severe intensification of the eurozone crisis could cause contagion to the Swedish economy and exert negative pressure on the rating.

"A build-up of macroeconomic imbalances in Sweden, most likely through an asset price bubble," was the biggest threat to its economic and financial stability, it said.

Sweden is a member of the European Union but not of the 17-nation eurozone.

The news isn't too surprising.

Sweden's government debt of 38.4% of GDP (in 2011) compares pretty well to the current EU-27 average of 82.5% .

Smoke and mirrors. Personal debt levels are where the debts are currently hidden, rather than public debt. Average debt levels are higher even than in the UK (expressed as total personal debt .vs. earnings). This will blow up when interest rates have to rise. They (banks and IMF) once said that Ireland was doing great (the Celtic Tiger) .. watch this space ...

Well done Sweden. It has been a tough time and we are not out of it yet so time to save investors and money. No it is not fun to be the government in place when there is no money to spend and tough measures needs to be taken ..Just like in real life! Please do not fall in the same trap as France who thought hmmm the right was no fun and ..lets vote for the left. They have learned its lesson and country might spiral into bankruptcy as investors are moving out of the country, workers are being overtaxed as well as the young people being pushed to work abroad will be double taxed so we would bring in and support more people living of the tax monies. The left with all respect but money needs to be coming out of somewhere and Sweden is already on the left being on the right.

there is always 2 sides to the story. swedes are heavily in debt. gotta have those overpriced designer clothes, ray ban glasses, obligatory ( Im so unique tattoo ) and new euro car parked out in the street. a house full of junk ikea furniture ( I use the term very loosely - furniture made of cardboard ) oh and dont forget to get your hair blonded and that fake tan.

swedes warned over high household debt from today.

these low rates are what got the world into trouble in the first place. if you cant afford a car - borrowing a huge amount of money to get one isnt too smart.
