Fewer granted asylum on re-application: report

It has become increasingly difficult for undocumented immigrants, whose application for permanent residence in Sweden has been rejected, to apply a second time, according to a new report by national broadcaster Sveriges Radio (SR).

Of the around 20,000 asylum seekers who have their application rejected annually, about 15,000 are sent back to their home country and only some 500 per year try again, reported the broadcaster.

And in order to re-apply, four years must have passed from the rejection.

Previously, 85 percent of those who applied for a permanent residence permit in Sweden were granted the right to stay, whereas today, this number has been reduced to 60 percent.

The change follows a precedent-making verdict from 2009, which states that the asylum seeker must cooperate with authorities after the application has been rejected. Remaining hidden after the initial rejection will not work in the applicant’s favour in the re-application process, according to SR.

But to get to stay in Sweden today on a re-application, there would need to be especially distressing circumstances, according to Fredrik Beijer, acting legal head for the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket).

“A family with children for example who have been here for a long time and where the children have adapted to Swedish society to an extent where it would be very hard to uproot and return to their home country,” said Beijer to SR.

Very good, very very good.

@Paul_225

Don't know if I really share your optimism. From 20K, 5K still get to stay, and this is only those who get that application rejected, on top of that you must add the thousands who get the application approved.

Of course each one who get any sort of "right" to stay will immediately file a "family" unification process to bring just about anyone he/she knows in the village. Their idea of "family" is much broad than ours and, of course, this's their yooman rites, innit?

So, even though getting rid of 15K is something to celebrate, there is still a lot to do to first stop this madness, then to reverse it.

@TG22 I have no idea what you're on about.

@azimuth

Thank you for your carefully thought out and very well articulated critique of my post. There is no way I can win an argument against the intellectual ability coming from such a bright mind like yours.

@Paul_225

Well.. never mind then...

@TG22

What family reunification process, it is not the applicant that defines what a family is, it is Swedish law that VERY clearly defines which members of a family can benefit from the family reunification process.

Furthermore, any migrant to Sweden regardless of country of origin have a right to family reunification, this is not unique to Sweden, in fact the Swedish definition of a family is in this case one of the strictest in the world.

The way I see it, Sweden is a signatory to the United Nations convention on the Status of Refugees, etc through which it accepts people migrating for specific reasons. Sweden is a signatory to the European Union Freedom of Movement which accepts people migrating for specific reasons. As long as it operates within the conventions judging each case on its merits or leave the convention (which it of course can) I don't see a problem.

I thought we were specifically talking about asylum seekers and its problems, however we can also talk about immigration.

In my opinion the problem is that many groups regards immigration as bad or good, for me it's just plain neutral. It all depends on who is coming, so the is not good or bad immigration but good and bad immigrants.

It's very clear that immigrants from Americas, South East Asia and Europe, more often than not, contribute positively to the society they move to. Of course nothing is 100%, but the vast majority of these immigrants are law biding, hard working, tax payers and usually adapt very well.

Sweden is signatory of many treaties, no doubt, and it works quite well for those groups listed above, the problem starts when Africans and Middle Esters join the party. Again, nothing is 100%, but the vast majority of people coming from those places put a huge strength in the public services, social welfare, security and criminality, not to mention the cultural havoc that they create.

That's why any move towards reduce the number of asylum seekers coming, and send back those who already came is a very welcome move, I just think much more must be done.

@TG22 Great post above. Couldn't have said it better! It is indeed only immigrants/asylum seeks from certain parts of the world who refuse to assimilate into Swedish society and are ruining the culture here.

Dear TG22!

Can you be more specific? are Latin Americans OK from your point of view or not? what about Indians? (luckily I am already disqualified as I am a bad middle eastern) I am sure you also have a range of color of skin in mind. Please elaborate on that becuz we all here understand your points of concern and would like to adapt the culture ... sorry color of skin you are referring to. Moreover, explain a little bit whether your definition of good immigrants includes females? or for them there are other standards? let's say age and beauty....

At least Hitler had some freakish reasons to be against Jews. You however have hit a new level of intelligence. I mean I know people here are racist, yet they are not as obvious as you are! To be a good racist, you should learn to conceal your feelings and present some lies in the name of statistics and science!

Freak!
02:04 July 24, 2012 by saab
First, next week we will hear that third time applicants have a high success rate.

@IranianBoy

Remarkable chap, you are. You scream racism! racism! all day and all night. Are you for one world government? And are you seriously drawing a comparison between Hitler and TG22? Twisted mind...
04:33 July 24, 2012 by godnatt
A good start anyway...

Next step, perhaps create educational/skill standards for immigrants that match the actual needs of Sweden?

Despite what the Iraniboys of the world think, Sweden actually is still a sovereign nation.
08:13 July 24, 2012 by muscle
@godnatt

I don't think educational standard can ever be a priority for the govt :S I mean at least this is what we get to understand when we hear PhD students not given work permit and the difficulties they have to go through :S
08:21 July 24, 2012 by FatherJon
I wish our Australian Govt. were as sensible. We're being inundated daily now with leaky boatloads of illegals who destroy their IDs at landfall, reinventing themselves as 'anybody' so as not to have their backgrounds investigated. Our weak lefty Govt. just goes through a pretend process of locking them in detention for a while before releasing them. These folk are mainly of village/peasant stock who are never going to be of any use to the country other than 'carrying and fetching'. Even then, why bother as we have the most generous social welfare system in the world.
18:03 July 24, 2012 by Enjoyourlife
@TG22 It is unfair to say all Africans/ Middle easters in Sweden are not contributing in the society. Not all African come from Somalia, Eritea and Gambia. There are a lot here for economic purposes and are working hard to have a good standard of life and support their families back home. And a lot of them return home when they feel they have made enough money. Even if they are cleaning, they are also contributing through their taxes. A lot of Middle easterners owe businesses as well. Except for the fact that they keep their wives at home making a lot of babies. It is good to see how your society is helping others to have a better life, instead of hating every Africans and middle easterners you see. A lot of latin Americans I know here are cleaners too.
12:27 July 25, 2012 by Camlon
Why do you think he wrote more often than not. As a group, the people from middle east and Africa do not benefit Sweden. Remember, that when I say as a group I do not mean as individuals.

If you don't think the conditions in Rosengard are acceptable, then it needs to be dealt with. We have already tried better integration. It is not working. In fact the problems are getting worse. For Swedens future, Sweden should try to limit unqualified immigration.

Do not take your wealth for granted. Southern Europe did, Argentina did and you can see what happened to them. Do not expect you can follow any policy and remain a first world country. If you want to help people, there are better ways to do that than immigration.

BTW: You should check the statistics before you claim a statistical fact. No, very few people from the middle east or Africa is going home.
14:59 July 25, 2012 by Spuds MacKenzie
@Camlon Well said!

@IranianBoy

Sweden is full of arabs and Irani who have nothing left in their home country.

You people run away from your country and never wish to go back.

Why are you putting in indians here.

Don't you know that there has been not a single case of asslyum seekers from India. Infact there are less than 5000 indians in this country while our popultion is 1.2 billion. Compare this to your numbers. you people are no less than 200,000 .

@TG22 & co. it wasn't/isn't madness when Europe built/is building itself with slaves, gold, diamond, cobalt, oil, gas, silver, coltan, rubber, timber, cocoa, coffee and thousands of natural resources; it becomes such a big deal, when less than 15K ppl most of whom from these resource rich countries but ravaged by conflicts sponsored directly or indirectly by the West/Russia/China, are getting permit to get protection. Hypocrisy at its finest
