Bulgarian berry pickers evacuated to Stockholm

Some 100 hundred Bulgarian berry pickers left stranded in the forests near Svabensverk in northern Sweden have been transported by coach to the Bulgarian embassy in Stockholm.

"They have said that they want to go to the embassy in order to be given help to get home, their situation is incredibly difficult," said Yoomi Renström at Ovanåker municipality which has organised the coaches.

The berry pickers have been collected from camps some 10 kilometres outside of Svabensverk and on Monday night their began to filter into town looking for food.

Local residents have in the meantime been supplying them with food and on Tuesday they were given shelter in municipal premises.

Bulgaria's ambassador Svetlan Stoev who today will meet with staff from the foreign ministry, has expressed disappointment over the decision to send the berry pickers to the embassy.

"To send people here is not a solution, first we need to be informed about it and secondly it makes no sense to simply transfer the problem from one place to another," he said.

According to the ambassador, there are now 63 Bulgarians outside the embassy in Stockholm, all seeking assistance in order to return home.

"We have asked for help from the social services in Stockholm, but we do not know what to do with all these people," he said.

Stoev said the whole situation is surprising as the embassy has not been told anything about the problems which have existed before.

"But the meeting yesterday with local authorities and police in Söderhamn was very informative," he said.

"We have asked for help from the social services in Stockholm, but we do not know what to do with all these people,"

Shouldn't Mr. ambassador ask for help from the social services & authorities in Bulgaria?

@Nora, maybe he should ask for help from the Bulgarian authorities. At the same time, the Swedish authorities should do the best to crack down on the Swedish farmers/crooks and put an end to the abuse they inflict on those migrant workers.

Why has there been no coverage or exposure of the berry picking companies who brought these people here to Sweden. Subjecting these migrant workers to appauling conditions should not be let off easily. Are these people going to be held accountable for their actions? Why are the names and faces of these people responsible not publicly exposed?

Immigrant labor is always just a subsidy to inefficient businesses who can't or won't pay market wages. It's an unholy alliance between business groups and pseudo-egalitarians who believe that everything is an excuse more more low-wage immigration.

How far behind is Sweden anyway? Mechanical berry harvesters have been around for a long time and they are cheaper than hand picking, even in the US with illegal labor. Why doesn't the Swedish agricultural industry just catch up with the 21st century. These berry picking fiascos happen every year.

I thought Bulgaria was part of the EU. Why can't they work in Sweden?

Mechanical berry harvesters do not work well out in the wild and in forests, etc.

They are only suitable for flat clean areas of land.

@ Amur'kn

How do you know that it`s berry picking companies that brought these people to Sweden and not some trickster back where they came from?

@ Marc the Texan

Sweden is a frontrunner in most fields. I guess you are from west Texas since you don`t seem to know all that much about picking berries in the wood.
