Stranded berry pickers gather in Stockholm

Stranded berry pickers are still pouring into the Bulgarian embassy in Stockholm, as another hundred seeking assistance arrived on Friday.

At least 70 more pickers are still left in the affected municipalities, and are asking for help to get home.

The migrants have been living in makeshift camps in the forests of central Sweden, amid simmering tensions with local residents, after being lured there by suspected human-traffickers with promises of seasonal work.

Bulgaria recently promised to foot the bill to get the migrant workers home by bus, and since then berry pickers have been trying to make their way to the embassy in Stockholm.

“We have a deal with Stockholm, and as soon as we get the go-ahead we’ll be sending the berry pickers, who want to go home, to Stockholm,” Yvette Andersson, head of Tierp municipality, said to the TT news agency.

Tierp received that green flag on Friday morning, and 34 berry pickers were subsequently bussed down to the Bulgarian embassy. During the afternoon, however, another 70 pickers have showed up.

“How they’ve landed here and where they came from I couldn’t quite say. They’ve come on foot, by train or bus, and have been dropped off by the embassy,” said Brita Mohlin, deputy head of security in Stockholm municipality, to TT.

The Bulgarian berry pickers are now temporarily being housed in the school Gärdesskolan. Busses to drive them home are on their way from Bulgaria, and are expected to arrive sometime this weekend.

“We suspect that even more people in need of aid will show up soon, and so we’ve got another housing arrangement prepared to open if necessary,” said Mohlin.

That's what you get when you let idiot countries like Bulgaria and Romania in to the EU...

Europe has had nothing but benefits by taking these two countries. You are against petty issues, like the exporting of some 2000 gypsy people, which is like blaming Sweden because a Swedish muslim blew itself up in some other country... Romania and Bulgaria are among the few countries that are respecting the Maastrich treaty of economics, they have taken all the measures for economy and unlike Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal and more importantly Greece, they are still growing nicely because they did what it needed to be done, even though they are often pointed at for corruption. Greece had more, they just hid it better.

The Ndrangheta Italian mafia is exporting some 8 to 10 tonnes of cocaine into western Europe, however, that doesn't seem to be a problem. But a few gypsy camps are. Interesting.

Just like Swedes take pride in inventing TNT and the roll bearing, Romanians also take pride in inventing insulin, the jet-engine, cybernetics, the pen (when everyone was using a feather, Romanians were using a fountain pen), and the cholera vaccine. Idiots? No, just poorer that Sweden. But it wasn't always like that. Not even 70 years ago, Sweden was much, much more poorer than Romania. And now you dare point fingers. What did Sweden do for Europe?

You know nothing of these countries. You blame over 40 million people, because of a few hundred people who try to earn some money?

Would you rather import work-force from India, China and Africa, who came there, send all the money back home, and forget to leave? Wouldn't you rather keep the money going round amongst us in Europe? Swede has cheap work-force, what it needs, and these two countries have decent wages to help them develop and become "less idiot".

Did you know that Romania has one of the fastest Internet connections in Europe, and top 10 in the world? Did you know that the biggest building IN THE WORLD after the pentagon is in Bucharest, the Romanian capital. Did you also know that Romania fought muslims for 500 years and acted as the shield against the islamizatin of Europe since... forever?

Bulgaria also has a similar history of inventions, so please, don't call us idiots. Sweden was a dirt poor country up until 70 years ago, whereas the Romanian people have been there for thousands of years, developing, inventing and STILL being the shield of Europe. Even the Americans use it as a shield against foreign rocket attacks against the U.S and Europe.

Also, did you know, that through Swedish, English and American veins runs Romanian blood? How so? The oldest human remains of the MODERN human have been found in Romania, providing an answer as to how and through where did human civillization got into Europe. About 20,000 years ago, you were all Romanian.

Hey julielou, who s the idiot again?

jan petras

you are totally right

i could add that you romanians fought the military invasion of europe by the muslims and you won we are in debt with romanians in that

unfortunatly from some 30 or so years the aviation and fastest way to travel also the relaxed immigration politics post world war ll has allowed the upcoming of a new way of invasion

the civil invasion

hundred times more dominating than the military invasion

we need some new romanians who can stop the civil invasion

too bad we are loosing this battle and i can only see it will be the last battle before the dissapearing of europe

very soon an original european will be a piece of museum

For they, who have already commented in here; it seems that you people don't have much information about the history of berry pickers in Sweden.

Every year, Sweden brings berry pickers from different part of developing world (EU or non-EU) to abuse them as a much as possible; some times, the Swedish government also help the private companies to abuse berry pickers as well.

To find more about it, just write berry picker in the search on the TheLocal site and you will find the oldest article about berry pickers at least in TL is going back to 19 Sep 2006 , "Thai berry pickers strike in Sweden".

You don't even have to read all the articles, just look at the titles and you'll figure out how abusive the Swedish system has been (at least in the case of berry pickers!)

To those like JulieLou40 You should learn a bit more about Bulgaria and Romania and read history despite I doubt you can read in general. Just to make my point I will ask you how many Swedes go on summer vacation to those countries, get drunk with cheap liquor and create problems to the local authorities. Have you ever heard their's governments to ask Sweden to take them back???But when someone come here to work and it gets slaved, people like you think that this is a problem because of Bulgaria and Romania. Dude how come problems like this happened in Sweden since you believe it is so much better than the other EU countries?
20:25 July 29, 2012 by Coolrunnings
Opening EU membership to east european countries was the biggest mistake in the history of western civilization. Now we have to deal with 3rd world problems, what a nuisance.

I would also like to point out here. More and more sweds are moving and trying to live permently in China and India. Please don't think that they are just living there peacefully. Some of them , start trying to raise the voice for FREEDOM OF speech crap! And try to clash with the govt in those countries.

So please, don't think that only other countries are doing this, it has been done in history (the take over of indo-pak subcontinent by the british) and then the mess created by the british french and japs in china... So please don't act as naive, As you sow so shall you reap!

You are now having people from other countries exactly the same way as your people did in the past, or are still doing it.
01:26 July 30, 2012 by MitchXXX
To Coolrunnings Open up your ayes 45% of the newborn Swedes are oroginaly from the so called "Third World countries" at the moment. Non of them is from Eastern Europe originally. There are even more people comming here every year so soon you will be living with majority of population with no European origin at all. When you blame Eastern Europe you should think about that those are workers who came to pick up berries- a job wich you would never be willing to do thinking you are kind of too special to do.The crime they did was by yor opinon that they wanned to work and feed their families comming to Sweden. The way you express yourself is showing a racist thinking.

Well done

I like east european, they make good servants. But I don like this stealing and begging. So we keep them as long as they cheap.
08:56 July 31, 2012 by KFF
I'm far from convinced they came to pick berries. Why would they arrive two months before the berry-season? It doesn't make sense. Berry picker is more an euphemism than else IMO. Five hundred romanian gypsies set up a gypsy camp in Sweden. Spend their time stealing from the locals. That's the facts on the ground.

The rest is mostly PR stunts.
