Princess Victoria cancels 'tough' Olympic trip

Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria has cancelled a planned trip to the Olympic Games in London to stay at home and take care of her daughter Princess Estelle.

"She has chosen to prioritize Princess Estelle, the trip would have been too tough to make with such a small child," said Royal Court spokesperson Bertil Ternert according to a report in the Aftonbladet daily.

The trip will however go ahead without the heir to the Swedish throne. Victoria's brother Prince Carl-Phillip, and husband Prince Daniel, are scheduled to arrive in London on Monday afternoon.

Bertil Ternert sought to play down the significance of Princess Victoria's decision.

"It is the case with all other families with small children," he said.

Princess Estelle is the daughter of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel and is the second in line to the Swedish throne.

Born on February 23rd 2012, Princess Estelle also carries the title of Duchess of Östergötland.

The Swedish royal family have a long tradition of supporting the Swedish team at the Olympics and other major sporting events.

In fact the reigning King Carl XVI Gustaf met Queen Silvia at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The then Sylvia Sommarlath was working at the games as an interpreter and hostess.

In 1st class it would be a dream. How is it people take their very young babies on flights all over the world in economy class and have them screaming the whole flight.
17:53 July 30, 2012 by Swedish Cat
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that their job dvs what we are paying their salary for? Sure there are other kids at the Olympics. Nanny??
18:53 July 30, 2012 by Dazzler
I was going to ask, doesnt she have like a half dozen nannies? Poor kid doesnt stand a chance in the rough and tumble world of royalty!
19:25 July 30, 2012 by Opinionfool
Yee gods, how "tough" is it to travel in purple airspace from Sweden to London? The subtext is Victoria doesn't want to go to London.
20:05 July 30, 2012 by Svensksmith
I know it would tough to make the trip on my budget.
20:21 July 30, 2012 by dizzymoe33
Good for her to realize how difficult the trip would be for her little daughter and has decided to stay home.

Since when is it a bad practice to make your child your priority? Traveling can be extremely stressful for infants, not to mention being carted around to different venues and being inundated with germs from hundreds of people. Give the woman the credit she deserves for being a caring mother and putting her child first. I applaud her choice.
00:22 July 31, 2012 by Swedish Cat
@ lga118

I agree with all those things above and I am offcourse not for to put the baby through a stressful time. However if you think about it this is her sole job to attend events like this and her salary is our tax money. Believe me it is not a small ordinary 9x5 salary we are discussing. If it was you or me we would have been taking maternity leave for less money the first year. After that if your child was standing in the way so you could not do your work you were paid to do it would be taking a holiday, or having a nanny. For sure your company would not say Oh you don't need to work because you have a kid. I know our situations are a bit different however that is the reason why she is paid numerous times over our salaries.

Good decision. There will be more Olympics. Wish more people made the same decision to stay home with their babies like Princess Victoria.

a spoilt brat too lazy to get off her fat pampered backside.

boo hoo. couldnt do a 2 hour flight surrounded by a small army of helpers in first class. my wife did shanghai to sydney in business class with 4 kids under 6 by herself.

but then again she is a highly educated self made woman. not a fat lazy spoilt cow. sucked in sweden shes all yours for after you coughed up 12 million krona for her wedding and a squillion per year for her to waddle from party to party with her nose in the trough. nothing royal about this family at all.
12:59 August 1, 2012 by skogsbo
smiling jack, totally agree. It's just a short hop, but they make it sound like an arduous challenge, both cities are within an hour of the airport, so no horrible connections. She be whisked through check in, straight to a nice lounge, no security queues, driven to the plane, assisted to her seat... sounds like hell ;)

Not to mention the fact that because of the panicers like her, London is deserted, it's probably a great time to visit all the typical London attractions, whilst the crowds are distracted elsewhere.
13:18 August 1, 2012 by trro
Totally agree with smilingjack and skogsbo. She is spoilt and needs to start understanding what it is like beeing a mom and having a job like most normal people. The rest of us earn a franction of what she does and certainly dont travel in the same kind of luxuary or have the same kind of help when we have little ones. I have a more than full time job, 2 children, a husband that works a real job 14 hours a day YES even in Sweden, and a home to keep floating and we manage all that, but then again we have never been spoilt with hand outs of any kind we have had to fend for ourselves and have never had the luxuary of being lazy and this will teach our children about courage and hard work and give them the strength that they need to survive in this very complicated, difficult and cruel world long after I am gone and no longer able to look out for them. you cannot successfully survive in this world if you are raised to be a softy. Get off your lazy ass women and gro a pair !!!
17:11 August 1, 2012 by gerak
Maybe she got scared of all the videos etc about what the Illuminati is allegedly planning in London for these days and decided it was safer to stay home...

Otherwise today it would be really a no biggie for her to travel with a baby, billions of women all over the world have been LIVING (and many of them WORKING) with one or more babies, throughout history, also in times of much rougher circumstances than of a Kronprinsess of modern Sweden.

Bravo Princess Victoria!! So nice to see that she is a mother first and a royal second! What a refreshing change from certain other countries royalty. God save the (future) Queen(s) of Sweden! Jag älskar Victoria!
12:18 August 5, 2012 by cogito
The royals lackeys always claim that the reason we are forced to support the monarchy with our taxes is that they are great PR for Sweden. The good will they pretend to create promotes Swedish exports..

So why isn't she in London doing what we pay her to do, that is, smile, wave and utter a few platitudes that someone else writes for her?

If she won't carry out these minimal responsibilities, she should be fired for derelict of duty..
11:42 August 7, 2012 by sakurasue
People seem to have a problem with her exempting herself from duties, but as a "public servant," isn't she also entitled to parental leave after her child is born just like other Swedish mothers??? Why should she have to return to work within the child's first year, which is extremely important time for bonding with mother??!!

Going to London to attend Olympic festivities is not a "minimal responsibility" for a new mother.
18:08 August 8, 2012 by cogito
#18. No, she is not entitled just like other Swedish mothers. If she wished to be just like other Swedish mothers, all she has to do is renounce her titles, the free first-class air travel and the myriad other luxuries and privileges she enjoys at taxpayers' expense.

Choose: crown princess or "just like other Swedish mothers." To want it both ways is the utmost hypocrisy.
23:22 August 9, 2012 by Asinya
You wanna yell about royalty not doing their job, look at her sister instead; wastes our money to plonk about everywhere BUT Sweden, never does any actual representing and has a bad reputation all over the world for being basically a shallow, rude, spoilt sk**k. She should be "dethroned" and stripped of everything - she is worthless and useless and basically just brings BAD rep for Sweden.

Victoria, however, is a Swedish mother - and while we DO pay her to go on events to Represent, she, just like all other Swedish mothers, REGARDLESS of income level, is entitled to time off work for taking care of her baby.

I'm against Monarchy, but I actually respect Victoria; the only member of her family who isn't a complete waste of time, space and money.

15:00 August 12, 2012 by cogito
Yes, and he strongly resembles his mom.

#26. I doubt that she spends much time "taking are of her baby." A fleet of nannies do that for her. The baby is mainly a prop for photo ops.
