The Local’s Guide to Stockholm Pride 2012

As Scandinavia’s biggest Pride festival kicks off in Stockholm, contributor Salomon Rogberg takes a look at some of the highlights of the week-long celebration.

"This will be the best festival ever and finally it begins," said festival manager Alf Kjeller in a statement on Tuesday.

This year, Stockholm Pride 2012 will be running between July 31th and August 4th.

Pride is the largest festival in the nordic countries highlighting LGBTQ issues. Each year the parade itself - which will take place on Saturday - attracts around 500,000 people to the streets of Stockholm.

This year's theme - together- is meant to acknowledge what people can do together; stand up against injustices, change society and create love.

Apart from joining the parade or simply enjoying a nice day out watching it, the festival is also - as always - jam packed with things to do.

There are many seminars and debates to go to, theatre acts to watch, burlesque tea parties to attend, or even pornographic films to watch.

The festival is not an event exclusively for those who are queer, gay, bisexual or transgender, say organizers, but also a “time and place for considering everyone’s equal value as well as for celebration and joy,”.

"Let the biggest love-fest begin," the Pride organizers say on the site.

Stockholm Pride, like most pride festivals, is not really about raising understanding and awareness at all, but rather a gross and ostentatious show of tasteless exhibitionism. The theme is always a nauseatingly left-wing, meaningless piece of jargon: this year 'togetherness', last year 'openness'. If gay people are always telling us how equal they are and always campaigning to be treated just like anybody else, why are they going to such lengths to show us just how different they actually are?

And pornagraphic films to watch? Fanatstic, something for the whole family then. The whole thing makes me want to puke.

I agree with you Achilles. It's all a load of rubbish.

A number of years ago, my wife and I met up with my best friend in Palm Springs, CA. He was there for a legal conference. We connected the morning after our arrival and went in search of breakfast... to our mutual surprise, it was the day of Palm Spring's Pride Festival.

After the initial shock wore off, we found it quite entertaining. We went back to the hotel, woke my wife, and the three of us spent half the day watching the parade and looking at exhibits before continuing our planned events. It was definitely an eye-opening experience;-)

*Part* of Stockholm Pride is an "ostentatious show" -- that's the only part you notice. Why would you notice the dull parts or the politics?

"The whole thing makes me want to puke." -- Then I suggest you frack off back to dull-arse Breederville and watch re-runs of Top Gear till you die of boredom.

It's a party. Celebrate freedom itself! Life is short. Party with the gays -- I assure you that you won't catch 'the gay' or anything.

organizers said ''time and place for considering everyone's equal value as well as for celebration and joy'' hmm does it mean, it includes the value of English Defense League as well?

Ah, if only LA's gay pride parade (actually, West Hollywood's) was still an orgy of exhibitionism. It's become so normalized it's boring. It's nothing but politicians and church groups and businesses advertising themselves.

Good for Stockholm for keeping it real.

Enjoy yourselves.

This is such an embarrassment to one of the greatest countries on Earth.

Nice, making prejudicial judgments and using a derogatory slur in order to support a parade that is supposedly celebrating love. To follow up on what Achilles said, one of the things I dislike about Pride parades is the hypocrisy by gay activists there is not only as bad, but much worse, than any hypocrisy displayed by your typical religious fundamentalist.

How so Farmon? Sweden isn't really known for its greatness. It's known for its neutrality and equality. And its acceptance of different sexual persuasions. How is it embarrassing?

So then, a celebration of psycho-social dysfunction (since the gay gene is quite obviously a logical absurdity).

I find it almost touching in it's naivity this readiness of the Swedes and Norwegians to submit to the destruction of their countries at the hands of Cultural Marxists. It reminds me very much of the cannibal Morlocks harvesting the helpless and effete Eloi in "The Time Machine."

When will you wake up and realise how much they hate you?

They hate your Nordicness, which thanks to the Nazis has come to epitomise racial purity. You are their number 1 target Scandinavia, although at least some Danes are wise to it.

Breivik's methods were atrocious but his motivation was absolutely right. To hell with the squawking and emotional blackmail, great nations are being trashed by communist scum.
