'I will race on Friday': Alshammar

Swedish swimmer Therese Alshammar said Tuesday she will race in her fifth Olympics despite a pinched nerve in her neck, and is set to compete in the women's 50m freestyle.

Having sat out the women's 4x100m freestyle relay on Saturday, when the Swedish team were disqualified in the final, Alshammar had been in danger of missing out in London.
An MRI scan last Wednesday revealed the pinched nerve which has caused the the 34-year-old numbness and pain in her arms and shoulders, allowing her only to take part in light training.
Having won two silver medals at Sydney 2000, Alshammar will race in Friday's 50m freestyle heats, but has decided to pull out of Wednesday's 100m heats.
"I am happy that the rehabilitation is going well," said Alshammar. "I am feeling better and better. It has been easier to sleep.
"I did some intensive work today, I haven't had a reaction, and I hope I wake up tomorrow without discomfort."
Having worn a neck brace for the last fortnight, Alshammar said she is now moving without pain and has been able to put in special training to help her rehabilitation.
Having won the 50m free at the world championships in Shanghai last year, Alshammar put herself among the top 10 in the world this year with a time of 24.50 in the one-lap sprint at the Swedish championships in early July.
