Swede takes home Olympic wrestling bronze

Johan Eurén became Sweden’s latest medal winner at the Olympic games after winning a bronze in Monday’s 120 kilogramme men's Greco Roman Wrestling.

The fight took place on Monday evening against Belarusian Joseb Tjugosjvili, and included a bloody third period after the Swede’s left eyebrow was cut open.

When asked by the Dagens Nyheter (DN) for what was next on the cards, the 27-year-old Swede replied:

“First it’s the awards ceremony and then I’m going home to lie down.”

Eurén fought through a tough elimination round where he faced competitors from Kazakstan, Hungary, Iran and Estonia. The only match he lost was that against the Estonian in the semi-final.

While admittedly a “little sour” that he couldn’t sneak through against the Estonian in a tight semi-final, Eurén was ecstatic to be taking home a medal in his first Olympic Games.

“The bronze is awesome. It will take the best place in my trophy cabinet,” he told DN.

The gold medal in the event was taken by Cuban Mijain Lopez Nunez and the silver by Heiki Nabi from Estonia. The other bronze medal was snagged by Turkey's Riza Kayaalp.

The medal marks Sweden’s second bronze in the summer games, and Sweden’s sixth medal overall – leaving the country in 29th place.

A bronze in wrestling ; and why is that news ?

Lets face it : Sweden has done very poorly in London 2012 olympics . Where are the medals in swimming , athletics , football and handball ? Riding horses or shooting plastic insects might be cool for some people , but it is not real sports . Maybe , someday , Sweden might win a gold medal in the sport of eating a lot of meatballs ?

@ Jes

Very poorly in regards to what? Chinas preformance? Sweden could and probably should do better but at the same time it`s a small northern country, how well must such a country preform to be considerd decent in a summer olympic game?
13:36 August 7, 2012 by Rishonim
@Migga.. How about NZ? they have won 3 gold so far. Jamaica 2, Grenada 1. All those countries are smaller than Sweden yet they perform better. Jamaica and Grenada are very poor nations with little resources to invest in their athletes, yet they have outperformed poor little northern boring Swedes.. Buah buah,

Thank you @Rishonim !

Sweden becomes a "small northern country " after it has failed to live up the hype that is created by Swedish media.

Had Sweden won its fooball and handball matches , I am very sure that @Migga would be here braging about the organisation skills of Scandanians.

@Migga forgets that this "small northern country " is the same country that (once upon a time) produced some of the world best tennis players , the best high-jumpers , the best tripple-jumper , the best 110m women hundlers ( one was a doper) and of course, the almighty Caroline Kluft.

Mind you , I am not mentioning that the swimmers , women footballers etc.

Who is replacing them now ?

Surely , the media should be asking a lot of questions instead of duping the@Miggas of this site that sweden should be happy with a bronze in wrestling and some silvers from some (exclusive) sport that no one really cares about in Swedish sports life .

If Kaz----f---stan can win 6 golds , why should Sweden be contented with a bronze here and a miss there ?

@ Rishonim

New Zeeland, Jamaica and Grenada are countries with summer weather almost all year around. No wonder they have strong atheletes when it comes to the summer olympics. That`s why I meantioned Sweden as a nothern country. Have you seen the medal count for Sweden during the winter games?

@ Jes

I said Sweden probably should and could do better, you decided to see past that part though and just start bashing instead. Other countries are doing better as they develope, Sweden has done well in the past since other countries were behind. Not so anymore.

Congratulations Sweden on another medal.

@ Jes

How many Olympic bronze medals do you have exactly?
06:48 August 8, 2012 by Rod Munch
Jes sounds like someone who has never competed athletically in his life. What a hater. A bronze in wrestling is an absolutely amazing accomplishment. People like Jes don't have the first clue about how many wrestlers there are worldwide and how excruciating their training is. Wrestlers are probably the most mentally and physically tough athletes in any sport and to be considered in the top 3 of their weight class is an incredible feat while merely making the Olympics is pretty freaking incredible itself.

But then again, it's Jes so he's probably hating just because Johan Eurén is an ethnic Swede. If it was Abu Jamal winning the bronze for Sweden Jes would be going wild about the great accomplishment. It's just 'white hate,' people. Let it slide.

Amen!

@Migga

if having summer all year round had something to do with perfomance , Saudi Arabia , India , Sri Lanka etc would produce the best sprinters and swimmers. All I am saying is that Sweden has lost its position .

@godnatt ,

do I need to have a medal to have an opinion ? How old are you ? @Rod Munch , you don`t sound intelligent ! What makes you think that I have never competed on sports ? ( you`d be surprised !) ...

and where do you get the idea that I am a " whitehater" ? .. Do you have a complex problem? Can`t help you with that .

Personally , I deal in facts . To say that wrestlers are probably the most mentally and physcically tough athletes is your opinion - not a FACT .

Some might say that gymanstics is one of the toughest sport -mentally and pysically .... and I would agree.

What about waight lifting then ------

Others else might say that wrestling is a boring sport very little happens besides 2 people rolling on the mat , checking out each others bits and buts like two overfed cats.... ; is by a mere accident that wrestling is the least watched sport world wide ?

In Sweden almost everybody knows the best tennis players in Sweden , the fastest swimmers , the best long and high jumpers , the best footballers ..... how many Swedes know who Johan Eurèn is or what he does ?

I bet that even The Local did not know him until he lost the Gold and the Silver medals.

So , relax kompis ! this is not a colour thing at all .
14:25 August 8, 2012 by Migga
@ Jes

Of course it has something to do with performance, number of people engage in the sports in the country and so on. It`s not everything but it`s a factor. If that`s all what you are saying then I`m in agreement but it`s important to add that other countries have stepped up in a big way. But sure if one want to bash Sweden I guess it`s more important to focus on Swedens underachivment.

Jes --Personally , I deal in facts.---

HAHAHAHA!!! Sure you do, buddy. I suppose you'll start carrying that philosophy over to other discussions as well. Personally, I can't wait.

---Others else might say that wrestling is a boring sport very little happens besides 2 people rolling on the mat , checking out each others bits and buts like two overfed cats...---

Nice. That's quite the homo-erotic imagination you have, Jes.
