Preschooler left alone at day care for hours

A 4-year-old boy in Malmö was left on his own for several hours after the pre-school staff took the other kids to the theatre and forgot about him.

“This is a scandal. We leave the most important thing in the world to us in their care. These things are just not allowed to happen,“ one parent told local paper Sydsvenskan.

Staff took the 12 pre-school children to see a theatre performance around lunchtime. When they left the school, the teachers thought that all children were accounted for, according to the paper.

It wasn’t until after the performance that they realized they were one little boy short. A member of staff ran back to the pre-school where the boy was found, calmly playing with some toys.

According to the paper, he had been asleep for most of the time, but had woken up to find himself all alone in the school.

At the local council, in charge of running the municipality pre-schools in the area, they are aghast that something like this could have happened.

“It is very serious that we forget a child this way. In this case it was because the parents had dropped the child off to us later and he had therefore not been counted with the others,” said Anders Grundström of the local council, to Sydsvenskan.

The boy and his parents have been allocated a therapist to work through what has happened and the council will investigate where the pre-school routines went wrong and if anyone needs to be held accountable for the oversight.

Oh for goodness sake, why is everything turned into a drama these days, of course the teachers have to be reprimanded for leaving the little one behind and proceedures must be investigated to ensure all children are accounted for at all times, but the article states he was asleep most of the time and when he woke up he just started playing with toys, he appears to be quite happy so why has a therapist been allocated to him and his parents to "work through what has happened", nothing has happened, the child is not dead injured or traumatised in any way so just forget it.

One thing is for certain by the time the so called "therapist" has finished messing with their heads the whole family will be "traumatised"

common mistake, happens a lot here in Sweden, just doesn't get reported as much, get over it already, more traumatic for the teachers than the parents I would think.

It does not seem like the child was traumatized, so I think the therapist is just a tool to placate the parents and to get them to shut up. No harm was done. The parents should be grateful that someone is taking the time to nurture and mother their child when they cannot do it. I do not have children, but can imagine that raising a child is an exhausting job. They should be thankful that someone is willing to do it. Not a big deal, just a lack of gratitude for those who work hard to raise the next generation.

but at the same time what the .... do you know about how the child took all that.. thats what the psy is going to investigate..

yeah you read in the news he just walk up and play, fine how do they know?, anyone but the kid was there..

So ok it might be a lot of drama for not much, and maybe it went completely ok for the kid, but for now you dont know.

looks like the kid took it fine... the parents and other adults are the ones in shock.

Oh..., a councillor, for what ?

And they are going to investigate to see if anyone should be held accountable ?

Well it was someones mistake ! The point isn't really that the kid suffered no ill effects, it's that he was left alone in the building for several hours. This is not an adult this is a pre-school child. What if he had drunk bleach or set the place alight ? Would the authorities perhaps be looking a little harder to see if it was maybe someones mistake. I do not advocate a blame culture and I do believe people make honest mistakes, but someone carries the can even if it just means better systems put in place to ensure this is not repeated.

I am surprised that anyone would believe that the kid was calm and quiet just because the careless teachers said so.

I imagine a kid who wakes up and see no one around screaming and banging on the door. They only start playing after they have cried out their lungs and worn themselves out. Even the bravest of kids will panic.

"and if anyone needs to be held accountable for the oversight. "

sais it all ready, really pissed off with this Swedish attitude,no responsibility, no accountability..

and the answer is Yes, someone should ALWAYS be accountable when something like this happens to prevent future situations like this happening happing. Instead of trying to wiggle out of it, make the people have some fear for their jobs so they actually do it correct.

Blaming the parents for dropping off a child late is NO EXCUSE for not counting correctly the first time.

Lax is what it is. Typical swedish laxness. Just read in The Local swiss edition about the punishment handed out to medical doctors who fail to prevent a pregnant mom's death. In Sweden it would just be an investigation, resulting in a few strongish words and a few added paragraphs to one of Landstingets documents. Now, if people in position of responsibility knew that they would be punished if they failed to act accordingly they certainly would not, for example, forget to add a late arrival to the list of children. I've seen the lax "can't be bothered" attitude so many times in all of Sweden's state run institutes.
