Complaint about 'hooker' kids clothes goes viral

Swedish high street fashion chain Lindex has been hit by an online storm after a woman’s complaint about their “hooker-like” clothing range for young girls went viral.

The woman who made the complaint, children’s author Malin Stehn from southern Sweden, posted a message on the Facebook page of Lindex, voicing her disappointment after shopping for her 9-year-old daughter.

“I was extremely disappointed by the range. Is it really the wish of the ‘marketers’ (producers and consumers) that nine-year-olds should dress like, excuse the expression, hookers???”

The message was posted on Tuesday morning, and has since received over 55,000 likes on Facebook and boasts hundreds of comments of support below.

Tight shirts with leather, leopard skin with black lace, and low cut tops were among the garments Stehn took issue with, claiming that the “sexy” outfits were the ones most highlighted in the displays.

“I am completely for the idea of cool and cheeky children’s clothing, but think that we adults should take a bigger responsibility for which signals we send to our young girls. How do you feel about this?” she continued.

Lindex, however, has not acted in response to the criticism, but has posted a message in reply to readers.

“Lindex is an international fashion company, which means that some people believe that certain items should not be available for children, while others believe it’s fashionable. Our aim is to offer a product range that appeals to many customers in the same markets we are in.”

According to their official site, Lindex is one of northern Europe's leading fashion chains with around 430 stores in Sweden, Norway, Finland, as well as other parts of Europe and the middle east.

They describe their range as “inspiring, affordable fashion to women interested in fashion”.

According to daily Metro newspaper, Lindex has also come under fire in the past for their bikini range for one-year-olds.

Maybe Sweden should pass a law making it legal to sell "hooker" clothes but illegal to buy them.

Problem, I love to see 20+ women dressed like Hookers, 10 sick, Problem- Dress like Hooker what does that say !!!!!!
15:04 August 10, 2012 by tadchem
This would provide a marvelous opportunity to identify the pedophiles and child molesters who might be buying clothes for their 'little friends'.

Lindex must me making millions, because the majority of the Swedish teenagers, look like hookers, talk like hookers and act like hookers.

@Svensksmith Do not give ideas to Ulrika Messing. It is not fair for Lindex.

Gee do you think the style might be a reflection of swedish society being filled with so many whores and perverts?

Isn't the woman's complain a labeling? So the next time that I see a woman or a lady in "Tight shirts with leather, leopard skin with black lace, and low cut tops", I'm allowed to think that she is a hooker?!

Or lets say, I'd act to a lady as she is a hooker, and I could say: Ops. your cloths are like hookers ...

Come on, you don't like these cloths for your 9 years old daughter, don't by them. If there are "really" 55000 others that "like" and do as you (and they also have children around this age), then the company will change the line to cope with this market. if there is still a demand, they make their products as they do now. This is called free market economy.

@ Nora

I`m going to take a wild guess and say that I don`t think that all those 55000+ have a nine year old daughter.

Fellows, fellows. You must bear in mind that everything in Sweden is illegal, fattening, inmoral, makes you sick or belongs to someone else.

Sweden is the country where almost eerything is forbidden, Why do you think we have a dictatorship?

Are we suggesting that looking like a hooker is bad? Sounds like an example of slut-shaming. Dressing a certain way is not an invitation. Or do we go down the route of certain cultures, and dress all women in full-length veils, because anything else suggests that "they must be asking for it".

Simple answer to your little flower not being dressed like a "hooker" is to not buy clothes that make her look like one. For all you right-wing market capitalists that means the market will sort it out. If you don't buy it, it will disappear from the stores. This is simply another attempt to impose your will on someone else. All of you who complain about the "oppression" of Swedish society are upset because you aren't being allowed to impose your own personal views on others.

Don't like it, don't buy it and let the market do it's job.

It says a lot more about the mother, as she apparently has time to be concerned over irrelevant things like this. Unless she dresses like her own parents did at her respective age, it might be worth it to accept that styles change and people dress differently as time progresses. I'm sure stuff she wore herself at younger ages has been called inappropriate, tramp- or hooker-like by others.

BBC ran a full hour episode on this just a month or so ago.

Free publicity? Childrens author, just realises after 9 years that Lindex is selling inappropriate clothing and posts about it, gets mentioned in the news by name and her job.

Brilliant self marketing!
