KGB summons teddy bear drop Swedes

Published: 11 Aug 12 15:14 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/42556/20120811/

Three Swedes behind the "teddy bear" stunt which has contributed to a full-blown diplomatic crisis between Belarus and Sweden, claimed on Saturday that they have been summoned to appear before the KGB.

"We've received a document from the KGB ... Three of us have been asked to appear before the KGB," Tomas Mazetti, the co-founder of the advertising agency that orchestrated the stunt, told AFP.

Swedish activists illegally flew a plane into Belarus early last month and dropped hundreds of teddy bears attached to little parachutes carrying signs calling for freedom of speech and human rights.

Belarus' authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko dismissed the country's top border control official and the top air force commander after the incident.

Mazetti said the letter was not clear on what grounds the Swedes were being summoned, but his understanding was that they had been asked to appear as witnesses -- not suspects -- within 10 days, or be sentenced to four years labour.

"The letter refers to 'refusal or avoidance of a victim or a witness to appear', it doesn't refer to suspects," he said.

However, Mazetti said the Swedes were going to demand guarantees from the KGB before travelling to Minsk.

"We're going to demand guarantees that the KGB does not indict us. They've said they would agree to that previously, but we want guarantees," he said.

On August 3rd, Minsk expelled the Swedish ambassador to Belarus alleging he was trying to "destroy" ties with the ex-Soviet state, a move Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt conceded could be linked to the teddy bear incident.

Sweden retaliated, refusing to welcome a new ambassador to replace a new envoy who left the post several weeks ago, and withdrew residency permits for two Belarus diplomats who were asked to leave the Scandinavian country.

And on August 8th, the spat escalated further when Minsk announced it was expelling all Swedish diplomats and closing its Stockholm mission.

it's uplifting to see that a swedish government supports it's citizen's illegal actions in the name of democracy. well i hope, that's what it is

The reality surpasses fiction.
17:41 August 11, 2012 by ryannewman
"demand guarantees that the KGB does not indict us" ?

Why would they? You only broke a lot of Belorussian and international laws.
17:47 August 11, 2012 by Rishonim
@ whoye,

Sweden always stand up for it's citizens. Look at all the efforts they have vested in Mehdi Ghezali ;-)
18:06 August 11, 2012 by prince T
that is the problem @rishonim. they fought for Mehzi and Dawit is languishing in jail. they defend people that will still come back and hurt us. that was the second time they are rescuing mehzi. sweden stands up for wrong people and seems tht sweden plays to the galary.

Well Done Swedes, An Act of Illegal Bravado ! Belarus and Russia should get their Act together and catch up to the real world diplomacy and economy KGB should be a thing of the past , who needs overpaid standover agents telling Free people of the World what to do and where to appear. Time for the KGB and Putin to dissapear for good
19:37 August 11, 2012 by occassional
So the flight was illegal after all? Interesting.
21:07 August 11, 2012 by Hisingen
Trust the KGB at your peril. Play safe and let them interview you - in Sweden. A promise from them is about as safe as a political opponent getting to be president in Belarus.

KGB as been dissolve in 1991 after a coup against Gorbatchef but the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus also uses the acronym KGB.

Nobody is actually discussing the purpose of the illegal act.

Mmmm. A country filled with dictators' lovers. Why the hell would they come here, one could ask? There is a lot of what they love so much back in their countries...

Border crossing in order to bomb the country with teddy bears is an "illegal act", but apparently suicide bombing and random rocket shooting on Jews is a "rightful struggle for justice".. Go figure them socialists.
04:35 August 12, 2012 by sleezypornorangutang
So when you have capital punishment, meaning death centence, you need someone to exercise this societal habit.

Which one of us is willing to be in that position, where your say will determine the fate of a convicted criminal, whether he is to die or not?

Should there even be a system where this person is needed?

Can you imagine such societal habit being misused?

"Swedish activists illegally flew a plane into Belarus early last month and dropped hundreds of teddy bears attached to little parachutes carrying signs calling for freedom of speech and human rights." This is what is all about. Swedes doing in another country what they would no like to be done in Sweden."

The Swedish ambassador collaorating with the opposition in Belarus to finish with Lukashenko. Carl Bildt crying foul. The EU backing up Sweden for its illegal actions against another country.

Obama in favour of Sweden, one of his favourites a.l., if not the favourite.

Everything in the name of democracy. No, sorry, everything in the name of securing the Belarusian gas in the future.

Lukashenko and Putin should drop dead. Bildt and Reinfeldt should be awarded with the Nobel Double Standards Prize

The typical Swedish double moral! What is good for Sweden is bad for another country.
13:09 August 12, 2012 by Reason abd Realism
Easy to get angry at the tin pot dictator, but the truth is, as stated by some other posters, that borders and airspace demark sovereign territory. We have to hope that socio-economic forces or his 11 year old son will change things eventually.

As for air space violations, people as old or older than me will recall the shooting down of Korean Air flight 707 during the cold war, after it wandered into Russian airspace (after it was mistaken for the Amercian AWAC jet that had been in the same area).

Having said all that, I for one will be shocked if the Swedes actually go to meet the KGB in Minsk. They (the Swedes) may do so with the naive expectation that this will generate further publicity for themselves, but they may have to pay for that with 4 years (or more) of labour in a re-education camp.
13:14 August 12, 2012 by J Jack
there is no KGB anymore, they must be referring to the SSC but it's not the same ... get it right.
18:55 August 12, 2012 by OUIJA
Thank you # 16. Right on target. The problem is that Swedes will never understand your points because they truly believe they can break the laws oa any country. Ask Bildt. I hope that Lukashenko hs Russian bears to stick into the a... of this and his morons.

You must watch out for the these bears, they come in pairs. They come from Sweden, and they are hungry.

They are cannibalist, they will enslave you, eat you, they will put death upon thee. You can not eat, you can not sleep, the destruction of the teddybear shall rule, and after all of this, WE-SHALL-ALL-BE-SWEDISH!!

AAAAARRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!"!!
11:57 August 13, 2012 by Chloe Monroe
The KGB? Really? You mean the organisation which ceased to exist in 1991?
12:34 August 13, 2012 by sleezypornorangutang
Mark my words people, the age of the teddybear is nigh. He will absolutely devour you.

The State Security Agency of the Republic of Belarus (Belarusian: Камітэт дзяржаўнай бяспекі, КДБ; translit. Kamitet Dziaržaǔnaj Biaspieki, KDB, Russian: Комитет государственной безопасности, КГБ; translit. Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, KGB) is the national intelligence agency of Belarus. It is the only intelligence agency that kept the Russian name "KGB" after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, albeit translated into Belarusian. (The "Special Riot Police," however, are still called OMON.)

"Nobody is actually discussing the purpose of the illegal act."

This isn't as much a place for discussions as it is for delivering petty insults to one another. It is a place for sharing one's prejudice and spreading one's hatred. If you wish proof, look no further than to OUIJA's posts. Or should I call him Tarc the Mexan...

I do not know how in the hell all those incomprehensible signs appear. It should have read only the following: The State Security Agency of the Republic of Belarus Belarusian:Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti, KGB, is the national intelligence agency of Belarus. It is the only intelligence agency that kept the Russian name "KGB" after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, albeit translated into Belarusian. (The "Special Riot Police," however, are still called OMON.)

Thanks for the irony.

"You're so flaming, you're practically on fire. I would stomp you out, but I don't want my foot to catch AIDS"

I pity you and your pathetic attempts of insulting. You really DO believe that behaving the low-life such as you are doing can affect me. I have news for you: it does not affect me in any way.

"I pity you and your pathetic attempts of insulting"

You really act as though your stupidity is a virtue.. I am not attempting to insult you. I am insulting you.

I forgot that I should not argue with idiots like you, because they will just lower me to their level, then beat me with experience.

You never, and I mean never, proved me that I was wrong, simply because your so-called brain is not fit for a serious discussion. It is fit to participate in a rainbow parade and nothing more.

One more chance: The problem is that Swedes truly believe they can break the laws of any country.

"Hen" When did you come out of the closet?
