Sweden's Prince Carl Philip was attacked on Saturday outside a nightclub in Cannes in southern France, according to a report in Aftonbladet.

The 33-year-old prince was punched in the head by an unknown assailant, the newspaper reported.

"The prince was attacked, unprovoked. He is doing fine, there were no injuries," said Royal Court press spokesperson Bertil Ternert to the TT news agency.

The incident is reported to have occurred at around 3am on Saturday morning.

As the prince was leaving the Baoli nightclub, where he had spent the evening with his girlfriend Sofia Hellqvist and friends, he was attacked by an unfamiliar man.

According to Aftonbladet the man managed to get a grip of the prince's neck and Hellqvist was forced to intervene to protect her beau.

"Darling, darling," she is reported to have screamed.

There were around ten people around the prince at the time and several became involved in the fight, with further punches thrown, according to Aftonbladet.

According to a witness the prince then promptly left with his friends and headed in the direction of the harbour.

The King and the Queen have been informed of the incident.

According to the Royal Court the attack will not have any significant impact on Prince Carl Philip's schedule.

Hope this was just a random act of violence.

Maybe he was attacked by a fellow Swede.

The swedish monarchy is at all time low as far as ratings go, which is not surprising when the king is implicated to organized crime and prostitution, the son is living it up in cannes and the daughter lives abroad in New york ..... all being payed for by the tax payers.

He shouldn't have pinched that girl's arse.

Where is his security staff? These people's living expenses get payed for by my tax money. The least I want to see happen in these situations is their personal security staff making sure their attackers will be spending the next 3 months on intensive care and making sure they'll be consuming any meals through a straw the rest of their lives.
18:37 August 12, 2012 by OUIJA
The attacker knew he was a Bernadotte.
19:47 August 12, 2012 by prince T
@ Abe L. U were reading my mind. They need to have security. I hope they will not wait till one of them is slaughtered like anna lindh b4 they wake up.

Agreed with Abe and Prince T- In this "new" and far more dangerous Sweden, the royalty as well as most politicians need security around the clock. Heck, I think that all Swedish women need a security guard these days.
21:27 August 12, 2012 by dizzymoe33
Don't the Royals have security with them when they are out and about? Where were they?

Abe and Prince T: On target. Better sooner than later. Royalty and government must be protected 24/365.

Big deal, a guy gets a punch in a night club. He maybe stared at the wrong girl or simply walked into somebody shoulder without even knowing. ............ Or some anty royalty Swede saw him.... what ever.
