Stockholm enjoys six 'summer' days in 2012

Swedes were slightly shortchanged on summer this year, with Stockholm only enjoying six days of temperatures over 25 degrees Celsius, compared with 28 days in 2011.

“We’ve not had any real heat waves. In both June and July, we were only up there with a few temperatures over 25 degrees. There has also been a lot of rain,” said Lisa Frost, meteorologist at SMHI to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

The figures were taken by the Swedish Meteorlogical and Hydrological Institute, SMHI, from the period between June 1st and August 19th.

Malmö, in Sweden’s south, saw nine days where the thermometer climbed above 25, compared to seven last year, while Gothenburg saw just five days of temperatures above 25.

Experts have put the cooler weather down to a heat wave in southern Europe.

“We have had a really powerful high pressure system down in the Mediterranean. It was really hot there. It allows a low pressure system to come up over us, giving us unstable weather. We have seen occasional high pressure areas, but they have been further south,” Frost said.

However, there have been a few patches of sunshine this week in Sweden, with Lund recording the highest temperature of the year on Monday with a sizzling 32.1 degrees Celsius.

According to Frost, this is very late for a national high.

“The seasonal maximum temperature tends to happen much sooner. It’s remarkable,” she told the paper.

Why on earth would anybody want a heat wave? Those six days are six too many, as far as I'm concerned.
21:16 August 23, 2012 by Programmeny
johan rebel that's crazy. Six days of temperatures over 25? That's like early spring in other places.

I'm originally Eastern European, we get really hot summers there. For example, this summer there weren't ANY days with temperature BELOW 25 from mid May until mid September.

June, July and August are usually with days between 32 and 38. That's awesome weather in my book.

But then again, everyone is accustomed with the weather of the place where they grew up.

I would have figured that Swedes would consider Summer days as any day with no snow on the ground?! :o)

was a pretty boring summer yeah.

we have had plenty of summers above 25+

close to 30-35+ But that's a bit suffocating. we're not use to it afterall.

as it often is swedish summer weather can bounce up and down very fast.

from 10 to 25 in a few hours sometimes. especially around august.

we actually had our " summer "

around august now.. think it was 20+ today as well.

im not counting but its well over 6 days 20+ now. pretty sweet.

By the way im far up northern sweden. stockholm is often more warmer.

but now it was the other way around atleast for august.

@Programmeny

Into weather forcasting?

"For example, this summer there weren't ANY days with temperature BELOW 25 from mid May until mid September."

You've got to be predicting weather since today is only August 24th. lol.

This is why Swedes travel so much. It isn't because they are globalized. They are just escaping.
22:30 August 24, 2012 by EP
And you the Swedes proudly proclaim that Swedish summers are the best ... yeah, if you call constant rain a great summer, perhaps.

Indeed a boring summer, in a country of boring people
