Flooding in Sweden after heavy weekend rainfall

Heavy rainfall on Sunday night led to severe flooding in parts of Sweden, with experts predicting that after a brief warm spell on Monday, the wet weather will continue into the week.

The rain, which hit the area around 9.30pm, caused many residents to call the emergency services, many with flooded basements.
The highway was closed to the public for around forty minutes following the downpour.
“Now we’ve got rid of most of the water and the road is open again, the traffic is moving,” Mikael Nilsson of the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) told the TT news agency.
Meanwhile, experts at meteorological institute SMHI predict that the bad weather will lift for most parts of Sweden on Monday.
“The rain will move away in the early hours of Monday morning. Then a temporary high-pressure system will give us sunny weather in most parts of the country. It is only in Västerbotten and Norrbotten that the rain will stay,” said meteorologist Lisa Frost to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.
However, the sun is not likely to stay either, according to the forecasters.
“On Tuesday, the overcast weather will increase and on Tuesday night we can expect more rain again. But on Wednesday, it will become a bit more stable, with sunny weather at least in southern Sweden,” she told the paper.
