Maker of 'whorer' king coins comes forward

The man behind several fake one-krona coins which mocked Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf, publicly revealed his identity Wednesday, stating the forgery was an "experiment".

The man, who identified himself as Karl Fredrik Mattsson in a press conference on Wednesday, made eight counterfeit coins in his so-called “experiment”.

Instead of the usual “Carl XVI Gustaf Sveriges Konung” ('Carl XVI Gustaf Sweden’s King'), the text written around the image of the King's head on the counterfeit coins read “Vår horkarl till Kung”, which translates roughly into English as “Our whorer of a King”.

Mattsson explained that he never put the coins into circulation; rather, he gave them to friends and acquaintances who shared their “findings” with Swedish media at the time.

It was Mattsson’s mother, in fact, who reported the first finding in June from up in Piteå in far northern Sweden.

The professional work of the counterfeiter impressed and baffled experts.

Meanwhile, the amateur artist, who works as a copywriter, wouldn’t explain to the gathered media why he made the coins or what they mean.

“I won’t explain why. I don’t think that it’s my responsibility as an amateur artist to explain art for someone,” he said at the press conference, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper, adding that he was prepared to face the music over his king-mocking coins, if need be.

“I am ready to be charged if the king wants to charge me,” Mattsson said.

The coins' royal insult is an apparent reference to the King's rumoured infidelities detailed in a tell-all biography of the king published in late 2010.

The book, entitled “Carl XVI Gustaf - Den motvillige monarken” (‘Carl XVI Gustaf - The reluctant monarch’), included a rare and detailed look into the King’s private life, including details of love affairs, wild parties with Swedish models, and connections to the underworld.

A couple of samples of the coins are currently on display at the National Museum of Economy in Stockholm.

Comment: Personally I don't think that His Majesty should demean himself to bring charges. That said, I do think that the authorities should bring charges of defacing coins of the Realm. Such a cheap and nasty trick should definitely NOT go unpunished, and no typical light Swedish punishment either. It was an act of total cowardice against the monarch.

Again I think this falls under freedom of speech and the King is a public figure. Always someone who will be offended to be the end of a practical joke but again, Everyone knows it is a joke and no more serious than a glossy magazine spreading rumours about someone. On the other hand forging money is a crime and for that there shall be a repercussion.

OK freedom of speech. You are a useless twit with the common sense of a newt, and the intelligence of 'themoron' in another column, and likely to be another whoremonger. Do you like the idea? ? ?

No, I don't expect that you do, and you are a public figure writing here. As to the forgery being a joke, only another moron would think that, Now we can say these things to each other since we can retaliate, but raking such muck about someone, the King, who is not in a position to either defend himself nor retaliate. Nor should he have to.

Vicious speculation or rumour is vile, and the one spreading such lies, whilst using your freedom of speech, is ruining an innocent person's reputation with no repercussions to himself. But then, perhaps you think that is right? But what if those rumours are about you? Still feel the same?

@ Hisingen. You are entitled your opinion and it does not mean that anyone else needs to either like it or agree. That is the beauty of it. Offcourse it is not fun to be in the receiving end of it of it but if you need to respect the Kings feelings than you also need to respect that Muslims or Christians get offended by drawing cartoons etc. It is offcourse not OK to bully someone for things they cannot help dvs handicap, gender, sex, race. The king is a public figure that us taxpayers are paying A LOT of money for his life in luxary due to his blood line. With his role comes a responsibility to be sociable behaved. Offcourse the press and public is picking up on the fact that this money is not being spent with style. It is not only rumours as he has admitted affairs and scandals. Yes he is only human but cut the old fashion monarchy. As I mentioned before. glossy gossip magazines that people seams to keep buying writes more crap than that.

and the king pisses rose water and speaking truth unto power is hardly an act of cowardice.

If a head of state is necessary advertise the post and select the best candidate every ten years.

Your comments are in common with so many other anti-monarchists I fear. You complain about the cost. Do you think that a president will come any cheaper?

I might suggest that you try doing what your nickname implies.

And see my comment just previous regarding head of state.
