Boy who sewed lips shut to stay in Sweden

The 15-year-old boy from Afghanistan who sewed his mouth shut after his residency application was rejected will not be deported from Sweden after a previous decision was reversed on Thursday.

“We have received new information that must be investigated,” said Fredrik Bengtsson, spokesperson for the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) to the TT news agency.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, the boy’s representative sent a formal request to the Migration Board for a temporary stop to the deportation case so it could be re-examined.

Without such a request, authorities are not able to act at all, however now they were forced to make a decision one way or the other.

15-year-old Ali had arrived to Sweden from Italy during the winter and was set to be sent back in accordance with the European Union Dublin Regulation, stipulating that illegal immigrants must be sent back to the country where they entered the EU.

However, the Migration Board reversed their decision Thursday due to the boy's deteriorating mental state. He is currently being cared for in a psychiatric emergency ward in Malmö, southern Sweden.

The boy, originally from Afghanistan, has now been given permission to stay in Sweden until further notice.

The 15-year-old told of being beaten and threatened by Italian police and how he was the victim of gang rape at a refugee center in Italy.

Cecilia Wikström, a Swedish Member of the European Parliament from the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) who works on asylum issues, was critical of the manner in which the boy has been treated.

“The difference in the new regulation means that we have an article that also says that if there is a risk of inhumane or degrading treatment in the first country, then we cannot return the person there, but the country that the person is in takes charge,” she said to TT.

“One should always act and make decisions in accordance with the best interests of children. There is nothing in this case to suggest that it is in the child's best interest to be returned to Italy.”

what if the boy be sent back to Italy and from there to Afghanistan all under protection. Sweden can follow whole deportation process to ensure everything is going well. If what the boy is saying about his stay in Italy is true, i really feel sad for him. Even so, It hard to believe that a 15 year old himself alone comes to this idea to sew his mouth shut. Additionally, what if there are 100 similar cases? can Sweden really grant stay to all of them? Anyway, it is a very difficult situation to decide on.

Jeez . . . . that's great! Stitch your lips together and you get to stay in Sweden.

The stores will run out of needles and thread now.

Poor guy, so sad he had to do this to get them to see how bad he can't be sent somewhere else

Sweden continues to shoot itself in the foot. If this man (b/c most of these so-called ensamkommande are lying about their age) is crazy enough to sew his own mouth shut, then he's definitely going to end up a violent criminal or rapist. Nice thought process, Sweden.

At least he won't be able to mouth off to people.

Most of these Afghan boys hide their age and once they land, the whole family joins later.

Sewing his mouth......this was exactly repeated by Afghan refugees in Australia, few months ago when their applications got rejected. If sweden wants good future of this boy, they should send him back to Afghanistan or any other muslim country such as Malaysia, Turkey not as a refugee but sponsor him and support him financially so that he could join good schooling.

This case has opend up new ways for all other refugees.

Bringing all refugees to sweden is not an asnwer to their troubles but helping them in their own country or in near by any other country.

Good for him. Just hope that he will not do the same thing to others in the future.

Fantastic! Stitch your lips together and you get to stay.

Needle and thread will soon be in short supply in Sweden.

A child born in a warzone will never remain a child. he is a grown man and has seen many things lost his family seen people dying and slept hungry without food and cloth and he is not like you who has everything and still complain.

@Rod Munch thanks i wish the swedish authorities would have time to read your comment. Without any apology sweden is one of the europe country with gullible system where people can easily cheat or deceive the system to get what they want just as the case of this afghan boy as a result of their too much leniency and weakness in their laws having mediocre as top heads in office and other institutions. This cannot happen in the UK,Switzerland and Germany.

Yaha, bring them all here! In 2 generations hwo will work and pay skatt?? The politicians?? )))) Why are they doing this??

I agree with Rouzi. If I was Italian reading this I would be furious. Basically what Swedish politicians are saying is that Italy is a 3d world country.. Then Italians should be welcome to Sweden to seek refuge and receive benefits?? There might be a reason that he had trouble there and perhaps Sweden was a better place to get benefits from.

Of course he was raped at the immigration refugee center in Italy. Haven't you people figured out the pattern of violence and sexual violence of people from certain areas of the world? Teenage boys are raped all the time in islamic countries. Just like everybody and everything else they feel like raping. Dogs in Turkey. Women, children, prisoners, whoever. That's how they roll.
