Swedes left stranded as Ryanair flight goes empty

A Swedish family is outraged after being told to find their own way home from Croatia when their Ryanair flight was cancelled, despite the fact that it still flew back to Sweden without any passengers.

The members of the Axelsson family from Nyköping, eastern Sweden, are livid with Ryanair after they were forced to find their own way home following a holiday in Rijeka, northern Croatia.

“I never thought they would behave this badly,” Mirva Axelsson told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

“We knew we were travelling with a budget airline but we never thought they’d leave us behind.”

Ryanair announced to passengers Friday that the wind was simply too strong to safely make the flight from Rijeka to Skavsta airport outside of Stockholm.

However, just two hours later the plane took off anyway – without any passengers on board.

Mirva, her husband, and their two children had no other choice but to make other arrangements, along with all the other passengers – a task that proved difficult as there was no internet available in the airport.

The Axelssons ended up taking a taxi from Rijeka across Slovenia and into Trieste in Italy.

From there, they took a train to Traviso where they stayed the night, flying the next morning to Sweden.

The whole affair cost the family around 8,000 kronor ($1,220) – money they are now trying to reclaim.

However, the family has had no success with even reaching the airline, and fear that they won't see the money again.

According to the Swedish Consumer Agency (Konsumentverket), an airline is wrong to leave passengers to fend for themselves.

“One has the right to help with transfers and rebooking, and if it comes to this kind of time span you have also the right to food and housing,” said agency spokesperson Jolanda Girzl to the paper.

The news come shortly after the Irish Independent newspaper detailed how Ryainair planes had sought 28 emergency landings citing fuel shortages – a result of their cost cutting approach to loading their planes with the minimal possible amount of fuel pre-flight.

You get what you pay for. There have only been hundreds of horror stories about Ryanair after all. It would not surprise me if the same family books their next vacation with them again, simply because they are cheap. Rather then skipping a vacation and taking the one after with more security, safety and comfort.

unfortunately, they didn't what they paid for; a return flight to sweden. consumer laws are in place to prevent this type of consumer fraud.

i refuse to fly ryan air because it is at the cost of other consumers and their employees. i refuse to be a part of a financial shell game that takes advantage of people.

Holy shiiiiiiit !!

The "emergency landing" is not as serious as it may seem. Pilots are supposed to have 30 minutes worth of fuel as a reserve. Once they are below that level, they are supposed to declare an emergency, which gives them priority for landing.

The only way in which Ryanairs fuel emergencies affected the passengers is, ironically, that they probably got to their destination faster.

In the words of Taaj Manzoor:

Because you was a cheapskate and you booked with a crap airline, isn't it?

I don't understand these issues??

If you've got decent travel insurance, they would fly you home and pay for everything.

Lyingair makes up its own rules. You pay peanuts you get monkeys.....

very suspect story.. if the flight was cancelled because of high winds (indeed that part is true- planes were not allowed to land at Skavsta) The plane "took off empty"- but it obviously did not fly to Skavsta, but to another airport. Sure Ryan is at fault for not providing overnight or alternative directions (maybe they did but the family didnt like it?)

The bit thats gets me is they were stupid enough to take a taxi across 2 countries!!!! Surely they could have taken another low cost flight to Germany and connected there instead?!

ie ther are daily flights to Koln, Zagreb and Bcn

I've flown Ryanair for over 10 years between Gothenburg and London at least 4-5 times a year and with the exception of 1 cancelled flight (due to fog. Flew next day instead) have never had a problem. I have a family of 6 and they have saved me thousands of pounds.

Of course there's going to be the odd horror story but generally they do a pretty good job of getting me from A to B. That's all I ask.

I too have flown Ryanair many times. Apart from a few delays, it's been ok. The main thing that irritates me about them is that most of their cabin staff can barely speak English, so the in-flight announcements are total garbage.

As long as you expect a flying bus, then you're alright. Oh, and the possibility that you may be left in the proverbial if they decide to cancel it.

@Shaky

Have had a similar experience, flew twice weekly for a year, delayed once, diverted to Arlanda once. The year after I flew Sas 8 times, luggage lost 6 times, delayed 8 times, forced to change at CPH for no reason x2 - plane actually hit the walkway thing in cph. SAS also keep using those MD80s and MD82s that should have been taken out of service 10 years ago.

Worse thing about ryan is that Scottish git message when youve landed and stupid passengers who seem to think they are flying 1st class transatlantic and "oh I am sure I can bring 25kgs of carry on luggage!"
