Subway robber probed for 50 other crimes

Police suspect the 28-year-old man who admitted to robbing an unconscious man and leaving him on the tracks of a subway station near Stockholm may have committed as many as 50 similar crimes.

The suspect was arrested on Friday after footage of him mugging of drunken 38-year-old man who had passed out and fallen onto the tracks of the Sandsborg metro station was broadcast last week on TV3's "Efterlyst" ('Wanted') television programme.

After relieving the man of his valuables, the 28-year-old thief then left his victim lying on the tracks where he was later hit by a train.

Under questioning by police, the suspect admitted to robbing the unconscious man, saying he didn't report that the man was on the tracks as he feared he would be blamed for the fall.

Now police are looking into whether the 28-year-old may be behind as many as 50 similar thefts in which drunken subway passengers were robbed.

"The only thing we can use against him is that he's been caught on film" said police inviestigator Dan Östman to the Expressen newspaper.

He explained that police are now compiling a list of similar thefts on the Stockholm public transit system between June 1st and September 8th of this year.

"We have a number of other crimes using similar methods that we're looking at," said Östman.

On Monday, prosecutors filed a motion to have the 28-year-old held on remand. A decision on the motion is expected to be issued by the Stockholm District Court on Tuesday.

So glad to see such competency with the Swedish police and legal system.

50 suspected robberies in Sweden, in the space of 3 months - by one person.

Heja Sverige!

One wonders if they (the police) are always sitting on tons of similar footage, and could not be bothered (or are not allowed) to make a website that displays the criminals in action.

If TV3 was allowed to broadcast this disgusting feces bag in theft + attempted murder mode, then surely the police or some TV station should be allowed to display on TV or on some website all such footage of criminals who have not yet been apprehended, to assist with their capture.

let him go where he come from so that he can participate in the US embassy protest. They need him there more than here.

Posting as an experienced thief catcher (retired), most countries in the world have seriously dedicated thieves that manage similar misdeeds at a rate of fifty per week, fifty in two weeks would be a slow period. Fifty attributed in three months leaves me with (a) not many thefts in Sweden, (b) not an ambitious thief or does other nasties not of the same method, (c) has a more legitimat method of obtaining money, supplemented by theft.

I like Reason abd Realism suggesting a review of reviewing cctv footage but given privacy laws and police shortages maybe some of those famous Swedish hackers can help,,,uuuh,,,legally.
