Sweden braces for frosty autumn chill

Falling temperatures are set to blanket much of Sweden with overnight frost in the coming days, according to forecasters, who add that residents shouldn't get their hopes up about a possible return of balmy summer weather.

”Temperatures will be nearing zero or below later in the week. In parts of middle Sweden the colder weather will be here by Friday," said meteorologist Lovisa Andersson from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) to news agency TT.

During clear and calm weather there is a risk that overnight frost will reach all the way down into south western Sweden, where -- at least by forecasters' definition -- it is still summer. But the sunny, warm and summery days are almost over, according to experts.

“As far as I can see, we will have cooler air all over the country. There is a chance of warmer temperatures later on and further south but not this week," Andersson told TT.

For the next few days, Sweden can expect temperatures between 15 degrees Celsius in the south and a mere five degrees in the north.

According to forecasters, autumn weather hasn’t officially arrived until the average temperature is below ten degrees for at least five consecutive nights.

By that definition, autumn has therefore only arrived to northern Sweden.

In the next few days more unstable weather is expected over Sweden with intermittent cloud coverage and showers.

The best chances of still catching some warming rays will be on Sunday, when many areas of Sweden can expect some sunshine and temperatures rising up to 22 degrees Celsius, before the weather turns unstable again.

According to SMHI, next week will see rain moving in over Sweden from the west while the north could see both rain and in some areas even snow coming in from the east.

Ugh...frost already?!?! It's not even October. Seriously...isn't crappy weather supposed to even out? After this so-called 'summer' I'm not sure I'm quite ready to dig out my winter coat quite yet. Guess it's time to stock up on Vitamin D!

Get out of Sweden for a while and come to Texas. The summer heat is over and several months of wonderful weather has arrived.

I love Sweden in the Summer but I can't take the cold weather.

ha! they removed my comment criticizing the local for their horrible reporting and judicial use of google translate for their unbelievably inept crew of reporter wannabees!

I don't mind the cold weather in autumn and winter, it's the darkness that's the hardest to endure. When it feels like you havn't seen the sun for weeks, and has a hard time remembering how a blue sky looks like. When it gets rainy, windy and grey. That's when you wish to be somewhere else than here. But cold sunny autumn or winter days are lovely.

Be British, be sincere and be bold »

"Sweden is a veritable smorgåsbord for UK business. I see our work as a bit like a kind of dragon’s den for both for larger and smaller British companies. It is about matching the UK companies, not with cash, but with Swedish market opportunities." READ »
