'It will never happen again': subway robber

Both the thief and the victim in last week’s shocking subway track robbery spoke out on Tuesday, with the thief offering apologies for leaving his target to be hit by a train.

After the security footage surfaced last week of the mugging of an unconscious man who had fallen onto the tracks at a Stockholm metro station, a manhunt ensued that resulted in the capture on Friday of a 28-year-old suspect.

The suspect spoke out during a remand hearing on Tuesday, offering his condolences to the victim, Johnny, who was hit by an oncoming train and has had to have his left foot amputated.

“Sorry, I stole so I could afford to buy food and treat my own damaged leg. It will never happen again,” the man said during interrogation, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The 28-year-old was ordered held on remand Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 38-year-old Johnny, who has undergone several operations on his legs, managed to get into a wheelchair for the first time on Tuesday and was visited by his daughter, Elsa.

“I’m doing all I can to fight on,” he said through his partner Louise on TV3's "Efterlyst" ('Wanted') television programme.

As well as the foot amputation, doctors have explained that the man’s right knee will never be correctly in place again, however the family is staying positive.

“Things are moving forward, there’s nothing that’s infected and the fever has begun to go down. Today has been a wonderful today, as he has been able to sit for a few moments in a wheelchair,” Louise said on the programme.

“It was very emotional for us all. Elsa shrieked in delight when her daddy came along in the wheelchair,” she said.

Meanwhile, the family is happy with the response from Sweden and the world following the publication of the video.

“It’s unbelievable how this has moved people and the response it’s got. Unbelievable. We are grateful, I can’t describe it in words,” she said.

The robbery occurred at 3am on Sunday September 8th at Sandsborg station in southern Stockholm.

Police have since linked the man to at least one other crime, although it is believed that he may be connected to as many as 50 other similar incidents.

Well hopefully this guy learned a lesson if not from Swedish legal system.
10:31 September 19, 2012 by Migga
The only thing this man is sorry about is that he got caught. If he really was sorry then he would have turned himself in.
10:48 September 19, 2012 by enoecrof
miggs is absolutely correct.. and a sob story about being broke is a laaaaame excuse.. i am homeless and dont have a job at the moment but if things get real tough i collect cans or do odd jobs to get the money.. and at the worst might steal some meat from the supermarket for the night.. but to rob someone of their personal belongings in this manner is the lowest.. may as well have gave him a kick while he was laying there just for good measure.. this bloke should be heavily punished.. but with the swedish legal system somehow its everyone elses fault and he needs help..pffffft!

after stealing someone unconscious in a train track saying "ill never do it again" doesnt inspire confidense. A person that would do such a thing cant be trusted to not do the same or worse. i hope he gets a chunky jail time

I am sure the robber has done a very bad thing here that doesn't mean the man who lost his leg is a hero, he is just another drunken man who fell of the platform. If the robber wouldn't have been in the scene, the result would be the same. So blame the filthy drunk too. I would say its only the humanity which took a dip here. Otherwise both guys deserves the accusation.
12:12 September 19, 2012 by motti
No matter rights and wrongs of the drunk. his assailant thief is a disgrace to humanity. He should have been charged with attempted manslaughter. To leave the idio on the tracks waiting fdor the train to run oveer him. Asolutely appalling

The first thing he will do is to buy a big hat so that no one can see his face the next time.
12:51 September 19, 2012 by Migga
@ volvon

It`s obvious that you haven`t seen the surveillance footage. The drunk sits on a bench by himself, with his face in his palms. That`s when the criminal sits down next to him and starts going through his pockets. The drunk is harassed to the point where he's had enough so he stands up and walks off. That`s when he stumbles down onto the tracks. To say that it would be the same outcome if the criminal wasn`t there is naive.

No doubt the robber who did this is a disgrace and deserves the full length of the law. These are not the kind of people that society should have to tolerate at any cost.

However, victims in situations like these need to take responsibility for themselves and personal well being. Appreciate that you live in an active and bustling city where anything is possible, don't drink so much that you put yourself in such a vulnerable position. If he were sober the criminal would have thought twice.

We have to do more to protect ourselves first and avoid being in situations like this!

Deportation would solve this problem immediately.
20:06 September 19, 2012 by frenchviking
I am disgusted by this guy, but even more by the fact that in Sweden these type of people are more protected than the average joe... let's see how long he is put away for...

I am very curious to know what the penalty for such crime would be in Tunisia where he is from? Maybe that is the fair thing to do, deport him to Tunisia where he can be judged and punished, for what he has done, and for giving his country a bad reputation...

In any case, I hope people remember his face, so if they see him in the streets they will be careful...

I would hope that someone would give him a good beating too! But the bastard is not worth to go to jail for... and the poor guy who would beat him would probably get a harsher punishment that he will ever get for his horrible crime... what a fair system we have...

sounds like good'ol justice system has given this guy a FIRM TALKIN' to and he is ready to go back into society as he proclaims 'i will never do it again'.

no wonder the crime is on the rise in this country.

what a joke!!

This guy is not a human being. what happened proves that he is an animal. I totally agree he is not feeling sorry for what happend. I m sure that if he felt sorry,he was going to turn him self in when the incident video was published.

I think deportation will make this guy feel that he got with commiting the crimes. Deoprtation will also allow him to continue robbing people in his home country.

I trust that the swedish and i believe that this man will be jailed for a quite long time.

You live in the most generous welfare state in the world and you stole so you could "afford to buy food and treat my own damaged leg."

Right...

Deport this psychopathic scumbag back to the hellhole he crawled out of.
