Ethiopia bans Swedish state television: report

Published: 22 Sep 12 16:49 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/43390/20120922/

The website of Swedish state broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) has been blocked in Ethiopia amid claims that the reason is their reporting of the case of journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye.

According to sources contacted by SVT, the svt.se website has been down in the country since early on Saturday morning.

Persson and Schibbye were recently released from Ethiopian prison and SVT is among the news media which have reported on claims that evidence was falsified to secure their convictions on terror charges.

"Ethiopia is very uncomfortable with the information that we have broadcast. They know that we are going to produce more," said reporter Johan Ripås to svt.se.

According to Mikael Hvinlund at SVT the cause of the interruption is under investigation.

"It is very regrettable if it is that they have shut down our site, that a country imposes such restrictions. We have had a comprehensive coverage and have strong sources, and they are obviously irritated by the publicity," he told the TT news agency.

"If they have done so deliberately then it is a very serious and powerful signal."

He confirmed that SVT were given no notice, and that it had come as a surprise.

"We are going to contact Ethiopia's embassy in Sweden to seek an explanation for why they have done this."

SVT are also busy investigating whether other Swedish news sites have also suffered the same fate.

"There are others also reporting so if there should be any point with it then they should close more Swedish sites," he said.

Banned from watching SVT? Lucky bastards
00:05 September 23, 2012 by RobinHood
I expect the Ethiopians are really inconvenienced by not being able to access SVT's website. I expect street protests anytime now.

OMG...Nobody cares...15 minutes of fame is long over for those two reporters...

They can go back and try to reopen their old Swedish Communist Youth Party newspaper...Or go "hiking" across Syrian border and hope to extend their media coverage.

If SVT would produce a bit more accurate and balanced reports rather than the "single eye" garbage they put out now, they would not be blocked.

Does this ban affect BOTH computers in the highly technological state of Ethiopia?

But how will they find their way around here if they cannot watch Landet runt anymore?

Double standard in its highest level. Sweden journalist Wiki leaks founder Assange is being hunted for allegedly "raping a woman", he has denied it and the world does not believe this story. These two boys Johan & Martine rapped a country (poor Ethiopia) by sneaking in illegally with an armed terrorist bandit and were caught in the middle of fighting. It was not a coincidence that the two survived the shoot out while the 15 terrorist bandits were all killed. The least John & Martin must do now is thank the Ethiopians for letting them live again. Ungrateful bastards!

SVT in general is arguably one of the least biased TVs in the world. However when it came to these reporters, the sense of supporting their own jobs had influenced their impartiality. Nobody says Ethiopia is innocent here but nobody in this world can enter a country illegally and expect a very nice treatment! Unfortunately SVT is not mentioning these facts.

My English is so bed please somebody help me to understand this.

What going on does Ethiopia ban Volvo from producing car in Ethiopia? Or Ethiopia ban ikea furniture from manufacturing furniture in Ethiopia. Please somebody help what is it Ethiopia ban? Sweden technical help to build our industry? Or modernized our farming? Or a rumor mill that pour gas on fire? Please somebody make me understand....Swedan are so advance they even ask u register to comment on this online newspaper.. Not only that they have to approve it before u post it..so how ever don't published can say he is baned from theLocal online newspaper.

Second thought Ethiopian government making a Hugh mistake buy banning the Swedan Tv. Because the Ethiopian people have to see those two reporter lie in their own eyes. In fact Ethiopian government doing a favor by baning them otherwise their idea would be bankrupt if they were exposed.

Who in the right mind support armed struggle.. If Swedan care about the OGadan people who not build hospital, school, and even industry to generate income. Etc etc.. At least the Swedan could try to make lasting peace....

If u can do the above left go. Leave us alone. U get our guys so just leave us alone.. We never interfere with ur internal afair so just leave as alone. Sorry I want to write more but I have to call china we have work to do.. Building dam, road, industry... I also waiting call from India and Sudia Arabia they care coming to invest billion more in framing..And food production... Ethiopia is open for business... Our rumor mill can wait..we can't eat ur tv rumor mill...we need real food we are busy..

I think the whole Africa should ban Volvo and Swedan import we will never take it setting down.. We will not die if we don't buy Swedan product. We can buy car from other nation.. I myself stop buying any thing Swedan I love Ikea and Volov but my country come first.

The obvious result of the morons saying that their apology was a sham. So much for being 'clever'. Mind you, SVT could send them back as their reporters . . . :-)

Those guys should be thankful that they were pardoned. I wish the Swedish government treats Mr. Assange the same way. I used to think that the Swedes were the most educated and most reasonable in the face of the planet but this issue shows how retarded they are. Why would they think that entering a country with out a visa and with terrorists should not warrant an arrest? What if these people were Afgani's? I bet the whole world would have given justice right there and made them guilty. This is the kind of double standard that we Ethiopians can not accept. All humans are equal and will be treated the same way both in case of good and in case of bad. These boys are thugs and they should understand that if they are found in any African country without a proper id, they may face what is known as mob justice. They are just lucky that it was the Ethiopian army (the most disciplined) who captured them. If I were them, I would go to my church and Thank the Almighty God for saving my life.

Their fifteen minutes of fame is over.

I wish Sweden would ban Swedish state television.

For all I care they should still be in prison, either in Ethiophia or Sweden. Don`t let the actions of these two criminal and leftish scum decide your opinion of Sweden or Swedes. They are a shame but they are only two people. Even if their actions are disgusting.
18:52 September 23, 2012 by Emerentia
Governments should shut down newssites, whatever they report about.
19:11 September 23, 2012 by Extraterrestrial
You are truly seeking attention!

Do you really think we Ethiopians care about what you say while we have the objective reality on the ground that you were collaborating with terrorist organization and violating domestic law of a sovereign state ?

We don't even care if you join ONLF and blow up yourself as they do often, my biggest fear is that you haven't learned from your past mistakes, I think the pardon was wrong because you two guys are still the same banana head as you were before prison, the reason people go to jail is to teach and change them from their past unlawful ways but, you tow guys seems too dumb head to understand what you have done, why you were arrested and why you were released.;

Don't this two guys have something productive to do?

I am putting the following questions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden and to the Swedish Embassy in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

1. How many Swedes live in Ethiopia? 100 ? 1000 ?

2. How many Swedes and non-Swedes visit Svt.se Webside ? 20 ? 200 ?

3. Swedish TV has no relevance whatsoever to the Government of Ethiopia or its 86 million inhabitants. Svt.se is also irrelvant to Africa and the World at large. It cannot be compared to France 24, CNN, BBC or Al Jazeera. It may have some relevance to Swedes and even that is questionable and marginal as Svt 4 is daily showing BBC to its Swedish audience.

4. Are these two clowns worth disrupting Ethio-Swedish relations and undoing all the work that is being done by the Swedish Embassy and SIDA in Ethiopia ?

5. Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden assessing the long term damage that is being done to Sweden's national interests in the horn of Africa in the name of freedom of information? Remember that the two clowns disregarded the laws of a soverign state. They were brought to courts, sentenced to 11 years and pardoned after publicly admitting their guild. Now they say they lied.

6. Do you think Svt's reckless response to the publicity stunts of the 2 clowns will not affect Dawit Isaac's release in Eritrea?

I could go on, but now I have to go and listen to BBC.

Dear 3319abraham,

I think ur question already answered by Swedish furniture Giant Ikea= Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Pls read

Swedish furniture giant Ikea removed a picture from its Russian website of four youths wearing balaclavas, in an apparent reference to the punk bandPussy Riot, members of which were jailed in Russia in August in a much-criticized ruling.

My intake is:-

After all freedom of speech is not important when money is in way. Freedom of speech can wait... If we are going to lose money.. Meaning if Sweden interest in way freedom of speech can wait but if it ethiopian interest in way allway we have to give way for freedom of speech at the cost of Ethiopia peace or interest.

I u imgine Ikea CEO saying freedom of speech?€£¥#%^*what freedom do speech are u taking? We are going to lose million I say remove the that picture as fast as one click...

The Ikea CEO call to Putin and said trust me I didn't even know pussy riot..

Putin:- what do u mean u don't u know pussy riot. Putin offended no one knows Russian star.

Ikea CEO I know pussy and Riot individually but not pussyRiot

Anyhow I removed them from my website. I hope every thing cool b/w us

Putin:- don't do it next time for now late pass.

Then the same day Ikea seen with to Swedan reporter who just freed from Ethiopia jail. Offer them money for their heroic fight for freedom of speech in backward Africa.

The two reporter :- but Ikea the money note u give us in torn (ripped) million place.

Ikea CEO:- smile in his face u have to assemble the note before u use it
