Sticky buns 'devastating' for Swedish wild boar

Swedish wildlife experts have warned that cinnamon buns used by hunters to tempt wild boar out of the woods could lead to a serious caries problem.

"It is not at all good for the animal's health," said Anders Hallengren at Skåne county council to the local Skånska Dagbladet daily.

The hunters in southern Sweden use bait to bring the animals out in the open and thus easier to target.

The hunters are reported to favour using cinnamon buns and other baked goods as they are both tempting for the boar and are also cheap.

But local officials warn that the practice, while increasing the chances of a successful hunt, it increases the risk that the boar suffer from weight problems and poor dental hygiene.

"A diet of cinnamon buns is devastating for a wild boar," Hallengren told the newspaper.

Furthermore as the baked bait is often placed alongside roads in the region there is a concern that the chance of car accidents involving wild animals will increase.

According to the National Wildlife Accident Council (Nationella Viltolycksrådet - NVR), a road accident involving a wild animal occurs on average every 15 minutes in Sweden.

The council has thus launched an information campaign to increase awareness and encourage road users to act more responsibly.

One key element of the campaign is to encourage car drivers to plan their trips in advance and thus enable them to avoid driving at excessive speeds.

The council has also launched a new telephone application which can be used to inform road users when they are entering a high risk zone.

Is Sweden in violation of EU labeling requirements with regards to 'sticky buns' and wild boar obesity? This issue surprises me in that so little attention has been given to it. -Paul O_o

As opposed to being shot by a hunter ?

Without doubt so called "hunters" are the vilest creatures on this planet. What exactly do they hunt ?? I don't think putting bait down and waiting for a creature to come to you to get blasted out of existence is hunting at all. Besides that, they really are despicable cowards using high velocity rifles etc. Give them a club and a bear and see how brave these mighty heroes are. I guess they were probably abused as children or they are just plain out and out sick, twisted miscreants.

No point in them arguing they do it for food. Plenty of meat at the nearest butcher or supermarket. These cretins just want to have fun.

I suppose it's futile to try and explain to the emotionally upset that wildlife biologists use hunting seasons as a means to keep animal populations at a level that's healthiest for them and the habitat. And hunters eat the meat.

That "plenty of meat at the nearest supermarket:" How do you suppose it got there? Someone killed animals.

I can see the new warning signs hanging in the woods-"please don't feed the animals with sticky buns due to health risks but please go ahead and shoot the animals for sports"!!!!

@ Flygger

How is killing wild animals any worse than killing animals that have been reared for meat. Also, killing them with a high velocity rifle is surely much more humane than using a club.

@ Flygger that is a great first line, Just saw Harry potter and i thought that

Dementors were the viles creatures, except for little Know-it-alls who will complain about Hunting, go back to McDonald and get Your chicken from the white styrofoam container. and please don't hit a Svin on the road...

The boars wouldn't have to run the risk of a toothache if these very same hunters, along with their allies the Lapps, were not hell-bent on killing every single wolf and lynx they can, legally or illegally.

A healthy predator population would soon sort the boars out, nature is pretty good at that sort of thing.

And yeah, hunting is by definition cowardly. But then again, the world is full of cowards. Moral and physical courage are rare qualities.

Yep them buns sure are dangerous.... A pig chances a small hole in their tooth or a small hole in there head or chest ....still it probably is a good gamble!

@zeulf and Peter Thomas.. Oh dear.. A right pair you two are.

Neither of you have recognised that hunters kill for fun. I suppose you like that huh ? Maybe you are in the same club together and swap stories of how brave you have been.

Hunters are vile for the pleasure they take out of killing a creature that is defenceless. They have no need to kill except for the fun feeling it gives them.

Perhaps if they had been in the Falkland Islands in 1982 when I was there then killing would not have been so easy or entertaining.

Both of you have shown yourselves up to be a pair of numbskulls.

There are all sorts of ways to bait wild pigs. Visit www.HuntWildPig.com for baiting recipes that don't necessarily require sticky cinnamon buns. Wild pigs are very prolific creatures... If not checked by hunters, all the crops of vegetables would be destroyed or littered with e.coli, so please don't attack hunters until you get all the facts.
