Swedish astronomers in giant star death find

Swedish scientists in a team of international astronomers have discovered a spiral of matter around a dying giant star, indicating the way our own sun will end its days.

“First it gets rid of all the matter; death throes that go on for approximately one billion years. Then all that is left is the core of the star. That makes it a so called ‘white dwarf’,” said Hans Olofsson, head of the Onsala space observatory near Gothenburg, to news agency TT.

Olofsson is one of the scientists behind the study, which will be published in Nature, but the discovery was made by using the very powerful Alma telescope in Chile.

The dying giant is called R Sculptoris, and like other stars in the final phase of its life, it is hurling out large amounts of matter into space.

This matter becomes the raw material for future stars, and is what life on planet Earth initially formed form, according to scientists.

The spiral structure, thought to have been created by another star which circles E Sculptoris, can be found in the matter that the dying giant is hurling into space.

Scientists call this discovery remarkable as it is the first time that anyone have been able to see such a spiral three dimensionally.

The find also indicates what the process of our own sun’s demise will be like in six or seven billion years.

Really?

There were scientists on a international team, that just happened to be Swedish?

Wow! Let me be the first to congratulate Sweden for proving it has the ability to produce scientists that can work to the same level of the rest of the world. I always presumed that Swedes were not able to achieve anything until I read this article. Maybe if this is the presumption from within Sweden, it will explain why more people left Sweden last year since records began.

Heja Sverige!

I love it when a response generated it based purely on hatred, and ignores the facts presented.

What a valuable asset.

You just described your own comment #1.

Your agenda is showing. What does this article have to do with Swedens migrations figures? Nothing, except in your mind.

Why not congratulate Sweden for proving it has the ability to produce scientists that can work to the same level of the rest of the world? I`d say that`s a good achivment for a country with only 9 million.

As a Swede I can say I am deeply disgusted by some of the comments on here which blatantly stink of xenophobia. Such is the poor understanding of the English language in combination with such nationalism. It fails to recognize the individuals or group and only looks to focus on the nationality of a few persons in a much larger group.

Where is the congratulations for other members of this team?

Do they not deserve accreditation for their work?

Or does their nationality cause such a divide that it leads to such racial hatred and slurs?

Without wanting to mention the Nazi's (or Sweden's extensive funding of them) - this type of ultra nationalism is reminiscent of when Germans only recognized their own.

Only six comments in and there`s already talk about xenophobia, nationalism and the Nazis. What a black and white world some live in.

It`s the article that highlights the fact that one of the scientists behind the discovery is a Swede, it isn`t strange that the comments reflect that.

Everyone involved should be congratulated.

"The find also indicates what the process of our own sun's demise will be like in six or seven billion years."

That's it folks-- six or seven billion years and the end of time as we know it. No people, no animals, no nothing just a burnt out rock in space. Kind of makes multiculturalism, neo-nazies, communists, leftists, those on the right and any religion (especially the one that wants to take over the world, being PC we can not say it's name) rather meaningless when you know when the end will be and you will be left with nothing and no one and nothing will ever know you existed.

"As a Swede"

Really? That's strange. Because I looked at your profile pic and you sure don't look like a Swede. But, it's possible that you are a Swede and it's merely meant to be a joke. A joke about a fat, bald Asian man getting buggered by Elmo....?

Anyway, the fact is, Bykre is a troll. Trolling the internet looking to get some attention. The only way he knows how. Negative attention though it may be, but to him it's better than no attention at all. Which is how I suspect, is the general theme for the rest of his fat, bald life.

An inflammatory comment, a plea for help, a cry for attention....a Troll.
