A Chihuahua was run over and killed by a police car in southern Sweden on Thursday, yet the officer “didn’t notice” the incident and drove away, prompting the owner to report the matter to police.

The dog was being taken for a walk by its owner who was horrified to witness the incident, which occurred in the southern Swedish town of Lund.

“I screamed at them and waved to them, but they say that they didn’t see me,” said the woman to the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

The Chihuahua was not on a leash at the time.

A motorist passing in the opposite direction who also witnessed the event turned around in an attempt to alert the police, but was unable to find them again.

When the woman reached the police by telephone soon after, the car in question returned to the scene, but the officers claimed that they had not even noticed what had happened.

The incident has now been reported to the police.

“This is being written up as a traffic accident that a dog has been run over. We’re not entirely certain of the circumstances surrounding it, but what we can state is that there is a traffic accident report that a police car, according to the information, has run over a dog,” explained Stephan Söderholm of the Lund police to the paper.

The incident is being investigated internally.

Well, it was the owner who was breaking the law since it's not legal to walk with a dog without a leash as far as I know. Why did she let her dog walk unleached on the street were the cars are driving? A chihuahua is very small and hard to notice.

The owner has the responsibility to make sure that her dog is safe. To walk on the street were cars are driving with a unleashed that size is to beg for it to get hit by a car, I think. Maybe she got tired of the dog, and want's some ensurence money or something I don't know.

It's like running over a rat. No wonder they didn't notice.

one less dog urinating on everything in stockholm can only be a good thing. fine the owner for having a dog off leash and charge them for any damage to the police car. Before I arrived I didnt realise that stockholm was a giant urinal for idiot dog owners who think its great for doggy woggy to urinate on public property. and that lovely smell.

The owner should be fined.

I work with dogs in Göteborg (as a dog walker) and I think that the owner did a terrible thing. You should never walk with your dog without it on a leash, especially in a city. I can understand in the woods, etc. Anyways, I do believe it was the woman's fault. I have seen and heard about other pet owner's here where there dog was playing in a park near a road and all of a sudden it runs into the street and gets hit. It is your responsibility to put your dog on a leash and care about its safety.

As for the dogs urinating all over Stockholm, some dog owners allow this, and I do not allow my dogs to urinate on buildings, only in parks (though accidents do happen). What makes me more mad are those who don't pick up the poo.

The Chihuahua is a Mexican breed of dog. Mexican is accustomed to being hit by the United States border police.
