Netflix launched its film streaming service in Sweden on Monday, offering a special deal to current Spotify subscribers in an otherwise low-key entry into the Nordic region for the US company.

"Today we're bringing Netflix to Sweden," Netflix director of content Erik Barmack said in a statement published Monday on the company's blog.

"Starting today, people throughout Sweden who love watching movies and TV shows can join almost 30 million of our members from over fifty countries around the world, who enjoy our service over the Internet streaming to Smart TVs, game consoles, computers, tablets, mobile devices and more."

The much anticipated move, first announced in late August, marks the first entry into the Swedish market of a major American internet film streaming service.

Later this autumn, HBO is expected to launch a similar on-demand film streaming service.

The two US firms will face-off against Swedish publishing company Bonnier's C More (previously Canal Plus), which recently launched on-demand service Filmnet.se, as well as Viasat's Viaplay streaming service and Voddler.

Netflix's launch in Sweden allows new subscribers to sign up for one month of free service, after which it will cost 79 kronor ($11.75) per month for access to the company's extensive catalogue of films and television shows.

As a part of the launch, current premium subscribers to Swedish streaming music service Spotify have been offered a free Netflix subscription for the rest of the 2012 calendar year, after which they will be charged 79 kronor.

"We are proud to have to be able to introduce the future of TV in Sweden. Now people in Sweden can watch fantastic movies and TV series anywhere, anytime, on a range of different devices," Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings said in a statement.

At the end of the day, you'll probably get exactly the same catalogue of "region locked" content that every other streaming service provider seems to have access to.

So unless they somehow have a vastly superior back-catalogue, I doubt they'll take the market by storm

ya i mean its ok....... i just opened my free month trial.... its good for movies, you know like the older ones you would like to watch you havent seen in a long time but dont want to buy.... for TV shows its no good. Like i looked at Mad Men they only have 1 season when there is 5, Glee had 2 season when i think there are 2.... the shows are just old seasons (for the most part) Skimming through the movies there is a pretty good selection.

1st month is free so it doesnt hurt to browse through and see if its worth it. just make sure to cancel the subscription before 30 days is up other wise you will get charged 79SEK

Use a VPN and sign up on the US site then they will only charge you $7.99 a month which is around 53SEK you can then access the Swedish version without a VPN or the US or UK versions with a VPN or Smart DNS.

If you went to University in the US, you may still have alumni access to your old VPN there. Good way to get one free and without bandwidth limits that make it hard to stream. That's what we do.... it's worth emailing your old school to find out. 8 bucks a month for all the crappy movies we want, instead of 15-16 bucks each (or whatever insane price it costs) to see a crappy movie at the Swedish movie monopolists, Bio.

I agree with kenny8076

There really is lots to watch on Netflix but just about everything is so old and outdated. I signed up for the free 1 month trial but ended it after a few days.

Ok for lots of people but at the low cost you only get what you pay for.

If your bandwidth usage is restricted it's not for you.
