Bus driver leaves 10-year-old on forest road

Published: 17 Oct 12 14:43 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/43882/20121017/

The parents of a 10-year-old schoolgirl in central Sweden were outraged after their daughter was kicked off the bus on a forest road some 20 kilometres from her home with an “invalid” bus pass.

"He said 'you need to get off here'" said Moa Abrahamsson to local paper Hela Hälsingland.

10-year-old Moa was travelling home from school when she was called to the front of the bus by the driver, who had pulled the bus over to the side of the road.

“He asked me if my bus pass was for travelling within the municipality. I was so surprised that I just answered ‘yes’ and then he said ‘you’re getting off here’,” said Moa to the paper.

The girl did as she was told and got off the vehicle, which drove off, leaving her alone on the wooded main road. Luckily her father could leave work and come to pick her up.

The girl alternates living with her father in Bollnäs and her mother in Söderhamn, and has previously been travelling by bus from school to both destinations without any trouble.

According to the paper, the girl had been issued the bus pass by the school administration and has used it several times before.

“There are no limitations written on the card and we have been told it is valid in the whole of Hälsingland County,” said her father Jakob Abrahamsson to Hela Hälsingland.

Linda Salén, CEO of the bus operator KR Trafik, which runs the bus service in question, has expressed her regrets about the incident:

“Of course the drivers shouldn’t act this way,” she said to the paper.

The company is looking into the validity of the pass, but regardless of the outcome, the girl told the paper she’d be afraid to get on a bus with the same driver again.

In most countries, this guy would be summarily fired.

This was a 10 year old girl, the least he could have done was to warn her about her buss pass being invalid, and letting her get to her destination SAFELY. This man indeed should be reprimanded for his insenstivity.

This is no more than the result of privatization. When you privatize, you take something out of the hands of society, and give it over to private interest to exploit for profit.

Privatization is capitalism, and capitalism is slavery and exploitation, period. Allow me to explain before you react emotionally to what is merely pure logic:

Capitalism is placement of control of factories, buildings, property, production, transportation and other aspects of the economy in the hands of the private sector. All the private sector wants to do is make a profit. Yes, they must work efficiently to make a profit, but they can also profit by cheating and deceiving. And that's easier to do.

And what is profit, where does it come from? It is certainly not just compensation for work performed. Profit then, is exploitation, it is taking a resource and using it to gain wealth. Where does profit come from? It comes from loss. So to make wealth, there must be poverty. To have profit, there must be loss. Profit then, is merely taking from others what you don't deserve. It is NOT the same as just compensation, payment for services rendered.

But guess what, wealth is power and control. So all capitalism does is enable the wealthy to control. How? Because labor is a resource. Labor is controlled by the private sector for the purpose of profit. And guess who is labor: you.

In America, we work about 35 hours a week to make someone else rich, and 5, probably less, to make our society function. It doesn't seem logical when you think of it that way; but that's the correct way to think about it. Trying to think about it from within the system will get you nowhere. You must step back, consider the whole of human history, and look at where we are.

Please, stop embracing privatization. You are turning your country into America and believe me, you don't want that. I'm leaving America because I cannot find friends, cannot find love, because my compatriots are all so terribly ignorant of the destructive nature of capitalism because they have been driven to that state because capitalism only functions when people are ignorant of their fate.

I think you will also find in cosseted, public organizations a great deal of people who couldn't give a hoot about providing value service. I wouldn't idolize socialism too much until you have experienced it at first hand.
17:41 October 17, 2012 by Scepticion
@MWolf, where do you live, on the moon? While I'm in no way in favor of the capitalistic excesses, this decision by the driver has nothing to do with capitalism. We see the same kind of boneheaded decisions from government agencies again and again. There is a culture of following rules (should I add "like in a communist state" for your sake?), no matter if it makes sense or not.

Were there no one else on the bus? No adults who could help her? I think it's sad that none of the other passengers (if there were any) reacted and said "Hey stop, you can't throw off a child alone on a road in the woods all alone! If her buss pass isn't valid, i'll pay for her trip rest of the way so she could get home, how much?". It's a good thing that kids these days have phones so they could call their parents, what should this little girl have done if she didn't, walk 20 kilometers along the road, hitchhike? Who knows what could have happened? This makes me really mad, what was that driver thinking?!
19:18 October 17, 2012 by Flygger
@MWolf and Emerentia

Shame on that driver and they should be seeking employment elsewhere by now and also assisting the Polis with inquiries.

Shame on MWolf for using this forum to rant about what seems a particular little obsessed hobbyhorse. It was actually so dull and uninteresting I nodded off twice just trying to fathom out why they had even bothered to write such drivel.

I agree completely with Emerentia. How awful that no-one spoke up.

Thank goodness the little girl's father rescued her before she could come to harm.
20:41 October 17, 2012 by Scepticion
@Emerentia, good point about others on the bus. but if it was so far in the woods, probably few people on board.

"what was the driver thinking"? Nothing, he's not paid for that, it's not in his union contract, he can't be fired for this. Maybe she was the last person on board, so he could go for an extra fika break after dropping her.
21:30 October 17, 2012 by Rishonim
@Emerentia. you are trying to appeal to the logical side of peoples brain but unfortunately that's not going to happen in this society. I am sure the adults on that bus were more concerned with getting home on time to watch their favourite retarded TV show than helping a child in distress. The buss driver should be sent to prison for endangering the life of that child. Alas, this is Sweden and noone is ever punished for their reckless action.

@MWolf

Thank you for speaking truth to power because

1. This would never ever have happened in a Communist country

2. I have not heard/read an adolescent rant about evil capitalism since I left University many years ago

simple fire him. what a heartless dumbf*ck
08:52 October 18, 2012 by ChocOwl
I can imagine that this happened rather quickly. Other passengers may not have heard anything - if they were sitting further back in the bus or listening to music etc or daydreaming looking out the window nobody would have even realised why the girl left the bus.

So I think it's understandable that nobody reacted or helped her
09:04 October 18, 2012 by Essingen
This needs legislation to prevent bus drivers throwing off children. There would need to be some other process...such as taking names and addresses to be subsequently followed up, but that shouldn't be beyond the capabilities of legislators.
09:54 October 18, 2012 by Rey Stockholm
@saab

It woildnt happen in a communist country. Correct but for wrong reasons.

In communist countries she would not be able to cross county borders without applying months in advance, collecting visas, paying fes, bribes.

Visits to families would not be a good enough reason to travel
12:26 October 18, 2012 by Flutterbye
We had a case here in the UK recently where a girl tried to get on a late night bus but was 20p short of the fare. The bus driver refused to let her on and drove off.

She called her mother who said she would come and collect her.

The girl started to walk, met a maniac who raped and murdered her.

How that bus driver now sleeps at night is beyond me also there were other passengers on the bus and nobody helped the girl.

If I had been there I would have given her the 20p she needed to get on the bus.

For gods sake it was 20 PENCE....stupid bus company, stupid bus driver, nasty passengers who turned a blind eye, common sense has now gone out of the window, we are bogged down by stupid rules.

Would have been a time when the bus driver would have just forgotten about the 20p shortfall and accepted what the girl had.
20:23 October 18, 2012 by dizzymoe33
Why did it take so long to notice her pass was invalid? He should have noticed it immediately when she boarded the bus. The right thing to do would have been to let the girl continue on to her destination and got her father's information so they could let him know that her pass was invalid and he needed to send in money to compensate. He should not have left her in the middle of no where by her self.
22:28 October 18, 2012 by DamnImmigrant
Sorry but would this not be CHILD ENDANGERMENT? Isn't this a legal issue?
10:30 October 19, 2012 by Garry Jones
I suspect her pass was valid to get on the bus. Most bus passes are plastic cards without writing on them. They are swiped infront of a beeper machine that beeps green for ok.

When she got to the "kommun" border it was not valid for travel outside so she had to get off at the border stop. If however she has used the pass in the opposite direction then it would be valid as a county pass rather than a kommun pass.

However x-trafik may not have sold the buss pass.

http://www.x-trafik.se/

520kr for a 30 day pass between Söderhamn and Bollnäs för a 7-19 year old.

240kr for a 30 day pass in Söderhamn för a 7-19 year old.

But she would probably be usiing "Schoolpass"

Can not be purchased by the public

All students that qualify for a buss pass are issed by the kommun. It has to be filled in with name of studen and name of school. The pass is valid on school days until 18.00.

I suspect the problem is that the kommn where she goes to school has issued the pass and that she is not allowed to use it to travel outside the kommun.

When I had my kids with me they did not qualify for a bus pass from my flat as they were officially living 5km away with their mother. She lived too near the school for a free bus pass. At 5km they would have qualified had they been officially living with me..

In the above case its probably up to the parents to pay the difference when she travels to the parent where she does not officiallyt live but that nobody has realised this before.

Anyway, I the bus driver has probably broken a Swedish law about endangerment.
