Baby Jesus 'barred' from Christmas market

Published: 18 Oct 12 09:00 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/43894/20121018/

A nativity scene planned for a popular Christmas market in southern Sweden has been cut after the organizers felt it compromised their “political and religious independence”.

“I am devastated and think they are crossing a line here. What are they celebrating at Fredriksdal? Is it just a commercial affair?” said church official Eva Åsare to local paper Helsingborgs Dagblad (HD).

When the planning for the Christmas market at Fredriksdal Gardens and Museums in Skåne County began several months ago, the organizers initially thought that the church’s proposal of a nativity scene with children from two local congregations would be a nice addition to the market.

However, a few months into the planning, the church received an email saying that the nativity scene would be cut as the market wanted to safeguard its identity as a “politically and religiously independent operation”.

Åsare said that the decision is a sign of “blatant fear of religion” and that the decision opens for new questions:

“Are you allowed to sell a straw star - that’s also a religious symbol? Are you allowed to sing Christian carols in concert? And what about the advent calendars?” Åsare asked the paper.

She finds it strange that a nativity scene would be considered out of place at a Christmas market, considering it depicts the reason Christmas is celebrated in Helsingborg, as well as many other parts of the world.

“No one would be forced to look at the nativity scene and I am pretty sure that many would like to be reminded of what happened in a stable in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago.”

The cultural board of the local authority (Kulturnämnden) has promised to look into the matter, saying that perhaps they have been hasty in their decision:

“We will look at what it is they want to do. It doesn’t mean they will get the go ahead, but that there is a chance,” said culture head Andrea Danielsson to the paper.

This is good news. We should all be wary of religion and its attempts to permeate our everyday lives. We should not only resist attempts to place religious beliefs into the public square, but actively retake these spaces for secular purposes only. The idea that some child was fathered by a non-human spirit entity is ridiculous. Obviously, Mary cheated on Joseph and neither wanted to admit it; she probably feared being stoned and he probably feared the shame of having been insulted by her infidelity. So they made up this cock-and-bull story about the immaculate conception. Anyone who buys that crap should have his head examined. And to celebrate it today is ludicrous.

what particularly pisses me off is the phenomenon of ''creeping christmas", when the christmas "atmosphere" and all the paraphernalia are at a display three months before!! however, regarding the topic i don't really feel a great difference between selling baby jesuses or rudolfs or christmas trees or what not. all this merchandise is produced to make money anyway.
11:30 October 18, 2012 by ?????
Well, I'm NOT religious at all but do the guys have a point here? I mean, Christmas is a celebration of Jesus' birth, no matter if he ever existed or not. If people don't like the idea just change the name and you'll still have the holidays! You can change it to Secularismas and celebrate the healing powers of shopping therapy miracle!

Oh, in the Bible none said that Mary was a virgin. That's what Paul came with in his mind later. And he never met Jesus in person anyway!
12:10 October 18, 2012 by Grokh
how does celebrating christmas doesnt do the same thing since its a religious holiday ?

aka pandering to muslims, coz no one else gives a flying f*ck if theres a nativity scene there.

@?????

Regarding your statment, "Oh, in the Bible none said that Mary was a virgin. That's what Paul came with in his mind later. And he never met Jesus in person anyway! " You are incorrect. You might try studying the Bible and learning what it teaches before making ignorant comments about its content.

From the Gospel of Matthew, "Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was this way (for His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph) before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

Mat 1:19 But Joseph, her husband to be, being just, and not willing to make her a public example, he purposed to put her away secretly.

Mat 1:20 And as he thought upon these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take to you Mary as your wife. For that in her is fathered of the Holy Spirit.

Mat 1:21 And she shall bear a son, and you shall call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins.

Mat 1:22 Now all this happened so that might be fulfilled that which was spoken of the LORD by the prophet, saying,

Mat 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb, and will bear a son. And they will call His name Emmanuel," which being interpreted is, God with us. "

From the Prophet Isaiah, (700 years before Christ's birth) "Isa 7:14 So, the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel."

These two passages alone refute your ignorant (or lying) statement about the Apostle Paul making things up.

This is great news. Religion shouldn`t have a place in the public room. It doesn`t matter if it`s christianity, islam or judaism. We can still celebrate our traidtions while we phase out the religious impact. Time to bring back the Yule Goat.

Anyone who worships any religion, as Stockholm Sam says, should be locked up in a home for the insane. How dare they do something Sam and I disagree with? They are clearly mad. Equally, anyone who disagrees with Sam or I on any other subject, are insane too. That includes supporting any team other than Gais, voting for any other political party than the Left, or preferring a color other than violet. If you fail under all or any of these issues, Sam and I, and men in white coats will haul you off to room 101 for reallignment until you are just like us and agree with everything we say.

Remember, Sam and I know what's good for you. No one else. Put your faith in us, let us decide your faith, football team and favorite color. No one else, especially you.

Like it or not, Europe traditionally is Christian. Christmas is a tradition, remove the central figure of Christmas and it's not christmas. They should just cancel Christmas, get the Swedes to work more. They fika enough already during the year. Or just get Festus going.

Either way, all this political correctness is so boring and bland ... just like Sweden. Figures!

Winter festivals were celebrated a long time before Christianity was around....

That being said, as a non-Christian, I don't see what the big deal is. So what if there is a nativity scene on display. It doesn't mean you have to believe in it. Hell, make a scene from Gilgamesh, the Torah or the flying spaghetti monster, as long as no one is getting hurt or indoctrinated.
18:48 October 18, 2012 by Migga
@ DAVID T

I don`t know if you were talking to me but christmas in swedish is JUL. JUL has nothing to do with christianity. It`s an old tradition that predates christianity. Jul comes from Julblot which in turn came from midvinterblot meaning midwinterfeast.

It was a time to celebrate the reawakening of nature and people held a feast in the honor of the god Jolner. From that comes many traditions like the Yule goat or Julbocken who came bearing gifts.

As I have said for at least 10 years now, The Muslims are slowly but surely taking over Sweden. Who else would change this as it IS a Christian holiday. I am an atheist, but I don't feel that I have the right to tell people what to do with their religion, as long as they don't try to change mine.

I am glad that I don't live in Sweden anymore, I am horrified as to what goes on, specially in Malmö, and noone does anything about it, as everyone is so worried about being called a racist. Then it will be no changes!
21:28 October 19, 2012 by Investor612
I'm sorry Stockholm Sam, Kevin, and other militant athiests had their delicate sensibilities offended by the possibility a Christmas scene might actually be depicted at a Christmas market. I hope that somehow they're able to get over the trauma that they might have seen a nativity scene. Oh, the horror!

You really are a funny, funny lot.

A country built on Christianity's vision denying its essence, claiming indoctrination when all of life is an act of messaging. Would rather submit to the banality of advertising than accept its roots. Is so petrified with a baby, a baby.... and froths at the mouth about threat to its new idol Secularism. Has even lost a sense of appreciation for image or metaphor, is scared of the narratives that have formed history, would rather view those who are in touch with spiritual sensibilities as terrorists and dubious. Has lost touch with their sense of wonder or mystery. Poor dull things. The world will end in Sweden with the psssssing of a deflated balloon.

Hilarious.

Being a Finn, I am both shocked and saddened on how deeply the Leftist subversion has rottened the Swedish spiritual and mental backbone.

According to Antonio Gramsci, the most important aspect of Marxist subversion is the anti-religious and anti-spiritual action. A nation cannot be destroyed as long as it has religion and has spiritual backbone. Once that spine has been rottened away, a nation will fall to Marxism like a ripe apple.

Replace the word "Marxism" with the word "Islam" and you get the situation in Sweden. We Finns have faced four wars during the past century and we know how easy it is to lose your freedom and how hard it is to win back. Swedes do not. Leftist subversion has done its job. Swedes have no moral spine anymore and no courage to defend what is dear to them and what they value most. They are completely defenseless against the tsunami of Islam.

Sweden is like a rotten house. One good kick and it will collapse. Secularism simply does not provide neither the moral backbone nor the spiritual courage to defend the nation and what is really valuable, like freedom and independence.

As much as I am an inti-islamist in my core, I do not think that this idiocy was pressed by islamists (or muslims, sorry, I am a bit lost at looking for a difference).

I think that this is forced by left wing, who would like nothing more than muslims getting sharia law here "because this is their tradition" and by that creating independent enclaves of society, thinking that islamists will repay with love.

History proves that islam repays with love only when everyone is submitted to authoritarian sharia law and this is what the lovely freedom fighter Svenssons do not get in their limitless thickness.

In Norran there was an active discussion about an evil priest who demanded to hold a speech about Jesus on Christmas, when a class of children wanted to use HIS church for a Christmas gathering. Do you get that people were demanding the priest not to say a word about God in his own church, but they wanted to use the church as a place for a kid party? All of this to be "fair" to 2 islamic families that in their turn had nothing against it....

Swedes were looking on the word "tolerance" for so long that they lost the meaning of it.

Tolerance is not "not noticing" that a person is different, but acknowledging this fact and having nothing against it, as long as his difference does not hurt others, like in the case of nazism, marxism, islam and satanism.
11:01 October 20, 2012 by Ironmistress
It is just that the Leftists have done the dirty job of rottening the core of the Swedish mental backbone, but it is the Islamists who will reap the harvest. Not Leftists.

We Finns have had to defend our independency and freedom four times in the past century with weapons in war - War of Independence, Winter War, Continuation War, War of Lapland - and we know that war is as much a psychological and spiritual battle as it is physical contest of arms.

When the Leftists have rottened the psychological backbone of Sweden, they have also rottened the Swedish will to fight and defend their freedom and what they consider valuable and worthy. The Swedes are like lost sheep. They are so frightened in the front of the threat of Islam that they will submit without fight.

Socialism, in all its forms, is mental glycol. It tastes sweet but it kills.

RE: What Stockholm Sam eluded to = Thought's like this is who Original Bible persons taught was in the Squares, They would speak and the crowds that were interested would gather. in many of these 1000's became believers.

Here in the States, It is now Illegal is some states to even have Home Bible Studies.

However, Yes all Religion's are a scam. Some like Hitler/Jew's believe they are the Master or Chosen Race. Others believe that while you think just believing in God/Christ will get you into heaven that main religions teach that this is impossible unless you accept a Earthly Organization. The "New Mediator" to replace the Christ. Which by all terms is Idolatry.

I could also quote the Jehovah's Witnesses too.

"" *** w67 10/1 p. 587 par. 9 Finding Freedom with Jehovah's Visible Organization ***

As the canon of books of God's Word was expanded and the Christian Greek Scriptures were added to complete the Bible, each book was written directly to the Christian congregation or to a member of the Christian congregation in its behalf. Thus the Bible is an organizational book and belongs to the Christian congregation as an organization, not to individuals, regardless of how sincerely they may believe that they can interpret the Bible. For this reason the Bible cannot be properly understood without Jehovah's visible organization in mind.""

So Religion's want you MONEY for GOD because we all know that GOD is FLAT BROKE and has to pay Millions upon millions of Angel's.

Earthly Religions do SUCK, Yet a Person's FAITH is something that should never be touched as a RIGHT. This is no different then having "IN GOD WE TRUST" asked to be removed from the US Currency.

One thing is clear though, Start removing one thing and the people accept it. Soon it will be churches, Mosque's and Synagogues and before you know it, We'll have a total godless society where it is illegal to preach/teach and if one believes in a SATAN that would be exactly what HE would want.
